A modular actuator assembly includes one or more plates or elements of electro-active material bonded to an electroded sheet, preferably by a structural polymer to form a card. The card is sealed, and may itself constitute a practical device, such as a vane, shaker, stirrer, lever, pusher or sonicator for direct contact with a solid or immersion in a fluid, or may be bonded by a stiff adhesive to make a surface-to-surface mechanical coupling with a solid workpiece, device, substrate machine or sample. The structural polymer provides a bending stiffness such that the thin plate does not deform to its breaking point, and a mechanical stiffness such that shear forces are efficiently coupled from the plate to the workpiece. In further embodiments, the card may include active circuit elements for switching, powering or processing signals, and/or passive circuit elements for filtering, matching or damping signals, so that few or no connections to outside circuitry are required. The actuator assembly can be manufactured in quantity, to provide a versatile actuator with uniform mechanical and actuation characteristics, that introduces negligible mass loading to the workpiece. The cards themselves may be arranged as independent mechanical actuators, rather tan strain-transfer actuators, in which the induced strain changes the position of the card. Various arrangements of pinned or cantilevered cards may act as a pusher, bender or other motive actuator, and structures such as powered bellows may be formed directly by folding one or more suitably patterned cards.

A satellite communication system includes Earth-based terminal and a satellite constellation in non-geosynchronous Earth orbits. When two or more satellites are within range of a first Earth-based terminal, the station requests a communication link with the first satellite at a first data rate. If the first satellite will accept data transfer at the first communication rate, the first Earth-based terminal transmits data to the first satellite at the requested first data rate. If, however, the first satellite will not accept data transfer at the requested first data rate, the first Earth-based terminal transmits a first portion of the data to the first satellite at a second data rate and transmits a second portion of the data, different from the first portion of the data, to the second satellite at a third data rate. The first and second satellites relay the respective data portions to a second Earth-based terminal, either directly or via additional satellites. The second Earth-based terminal reassembles the first and second data portions to recover the original data. The data transfer may be unequal error correction encoded data whereby the second Earth-based terminal may recover the original data from only a portion of the received error correction encoded data.

Satellite communication system with variable rate satellite link diversity

A low-cost, low maintenance earth-based station is disclosed which includes a fixed aperture antenna directed to a fixed location. The system operates with a plurality of non-geosynchronous satellites that will periodically pass through a beam coverage region of the antenna. When one of the satellites comes within range of the earth-based station, the earth-based station detects the presence of the satellite and synchronizes the earth-based station with the satellite. When synchronization is complete, the earth-based station transmits stored data to the satellite. The data to be transmitted is stored within a data storage device that may be present at the earth-based station or remotely located and transmitted to the earth-based station using conventional techniques. The data may be transferred to the earth-based station from a remote data storage facility in response to a polling request after the satellite has been detected within range of the antenna, or automatically transferred from the remote storage facility and temporarily stored at the earth-based station in anticipation of the next satellite to come within range.
