A printer with adhesive capabilities is presented. A printer includes one or more printing elements to image one or two sides of print media. The printer also includes an adhesive element to apply or activate adhesive material on at least one of the two sides of the print media.

Printer with adhesive capabilities

A multipurpose printer and techniques for operating the printer are presented. A printer includes first and second print elements. During a first mode of operation for the printer, both the first and second print elements are configured to image both first and second sides of print media passing through the printer. During a second mode of operation, the first print element is prevented from interfacing with at least portions of the first side of the media that include adhesive materials affixed thereto.

Thermal printers and methods of operating thereof are provided. In one embodiment, a thermal printer comprising a thermal print head, thermal media including a direct thermal thermally sensitive coating on at least a first side thereof, and a thermal transfer ribbon installed between the thermal print head and the first side of the thermal media is provided, wherein the thermal print head is adapted to apply heat at a first temperature to image the direct thermal thermally sensitive coating without transferring a thermal transfer coating associated with the thermal transfer ribbon and a second temperature to image the direct thermal thermally sensitive coating and transfer the thermal transfer coating associated with the thermal transfer ribbon.

A heat-activated linerless label comprises a heat-activated adhesive coating. Portions of the heat-activated adhesive coating are selectively activated by a thermal printer.

Heat-activated linerless label

A direct thermal label and methods of making thereof are provided. In one embodiment, a direct thermal label comprising a first substrate and a thermal barrier coating is provided, wherein the first substrate has a thermally sensitive coating situated over the thermal barrier coating on at least a first side thereof.

Thermal labels

Two-sided thermal media comprising thermal transfer receptive and/or direct thermal thermally sensitive coatings on one or both of a first and a second side thereof are provided. In one embodiment, two-sided thermal media comprising a substrate having a first side and a second side, opposite the first side, and a first and a second thermal transfer receptive coating supported on the respective first and second substrate sides is provided. In another embodiment, two-sided thermal media comprising a substrate having a thermal transfer receptive coating on a first side thereof, and a direct thermal thermally sensitive coating on a second side thereof, is provided. In some embodiments, a direct thermal thermally sensitive coating provided on one or both sides of two-sided thermal media is adapted to image at a temperature different than a temperature at which thermal transfer printing has or can occur.

Two-sided thermal media

A radio frequency identification enabled dual-sided direct thermal image element and printer therefor are provided. One embodiment includes, a first substrate having an exterior side and an interior side, a radio frequency identification device attached to the interior side of the first substrate, and a second substrate having an exterior side and an interior side, wherein both the first substrate and the second substrate include a thermally sensitive coating on at least the exterior side thereof, and wherein the interior side of the second substrate is attached to the interior side of the first substrate, such that the radio frequency identification device is positioned between the first substrate and second substrate.

Two sided thermal RFID

A label, method of printing and method of manufacture that includes a label comprising a transparent protective layer, a thermosensitive image-forming adhesive layer and a release liner. The transparent protective layer is of a thickness and weight, which permits sufficient heat to be conducted through it to the thermosensitive image-forming adhesive layer to cause thermally active dye in the thermosensitive image-forming adhesive layer to change color in the area where the heat is conducted.

A linerless label roll includes a web wound along a running axis, and having a series of index marks spaced longitudinally apart. A series of adhesive patches runs along the web, with differently sized adhesive-free zones therebetween in register with the index marks.

Idle registered label roll

A label roll includes a web having front and back surfaces wound in a roll. The back surface includes adhesive patches aligned in a column along the running axis of the web. The front surface includes a release strip behind the column of patches and laminated thereto in successive layers in the roll.

Columnar adhesive label roll

In one embodiment, a two-sided thermal transfer ribbon comprising a substrate having a first side and a second side, opposite the first side, and respective first and second thermal transfer coatings supported on the respective first and second sides is provided. In further embodiments, the first thermal transfer coating is adapted to transfer to print media when heated to a first temperature, and the second thermal transfer coating is adapted to transfer to print media when heated to a second temperature different from the first temperature.

Disclosed are resin coated flexible substrates, such as labels, including spine labels for CDs and DVDs which are adapted for thermal transfer printing, methods for preparing and printing on these resin coated flexible substrates and the printed substrates obtained therefrom. The printed substrates have images which are stable even when subjected to the heat and abrasion from a process which provides a shrink-wrap over the printed substrate.

Resin coated flexible substrates for printing high temperature resistant images

The present invention relates to a thermal transfer medium which transfers images to a receiving substrate. The thermal transfer medium includes a laminate, having a substrate, a coating and a functional layer positioned substantially on the coating. This coating may include an oil. Furthermore, the present invention also relates to a method of making the thermal transfer medium.
