A process and apparatus are provided for forming filament wound composite workpieces. The process comprises the steps of: providing reinforcement material; providing an injection die; providing a winding apparatus including a rotatable mandrel; passing the reinforcement material through the injection die; injecting a resin material into the injection die to impregnate the reinforcement material with the resin material to form impregnated reinforcement material; and winding the impregnated reinforcement material about the mandrel so as to form a composite workpiece.

Process for filament winding composite workpieces

A formable reinforcement bar, a process for producing a formable reinforcing bar and a supported structure including a formable reinforcement bar are provided. The reinforcement bar includes a body portion of a fiber reinforced thermoplastic material. The process involves laminating multiple layers of thin strips or bundles of fiber reinforced thermoplastic to produce the formable rebar. The formable rebar may be produced at remote locations such as a construction site. The supported structure includes a composite material having a formable rebar embedded therein.

Formable reinforcing bar and method for making same

Composite reinforcements (100, 100A, 100B, 100C) are formed by combining a first plurality of continuous fibers (102) with a second plurality of continuous fibers (106) with the first and second pluralities of continuous fibers (102, 106) being impregnated with at least one appropriate resin material (R1, R2, R3) and pultruded to form the reinforcements. The first and second pluralities of continuous fibers (102, 106) can be intermixed with one another or combined as a central core (104, 132) of the first fibers with a jacket (108, 108A, 108B, 134) formed by the second fibers. In either event, the combined fibers are formed as an elongated rod (110) and rigidified using the resin material. The first fibers are glass, either E-glass or S-2 glass, with the second fibers being either carbon, aramid, S-2 glass or AR-glass. The composite reinforcements of the present application, formed by combining these materials, have characteristics very similar to steel under tensile loading but with superior corrosion resistance and less detrimental deterioration characteristics.

Strands of resin-impregnated glass filaments are wound on a rectangular form, the resin is cured, and the resulting rectangular tube is severed to produce two hold-down lugs. Several such hold-down lugs are secured to a tank by resin-impregnated glass filaments wound therearound.

Two generally flat, spaced U-shaped portions of the lug generally parallel to a first reference plane and each having a bight portion connecting a pair of straight parallel spaced leg portions are joined at the free end portions of their leg portions by two generally flat, spaced straight lug portions parallel to each other and to a second reference plane perpendicular to the first. The lug is formed of a continuously wound resin-impregnated strand of glass filaments. Several such lifting lugs are secured to a tank by resin-impregnated glass filaments wound therearound.
