A mobile station for notification of a circuit switched event. The mobile station includes a circuit switched modem, a packetized data modem, a radio, and a tune away controller. The circuit switched communicates circuit switched data over a circuit switched network. The packetized data modem communicates packetized data over a packetized data network. The radio couples the packetized data modem to the packetized data network via a packetized data radio link, and couples the circuit switched modem to the circuit switched network via a circuit switched radio link. The tune away controller is coupled to the circuit switched modem and to the packetized data modem, and indicates tune away events over the packetized data network and notice the mobile station to process the circuit switched event, where the tune away controller directs switching of the radio between the packetized data radio link and the circuit switched radio link.

The femtocell may receive second information from the service provider, where the second information includes one or more operational parameters. The operational parameters may include hand-off parameters, admission policy parameters, PN or scrambling codes, power parameters, and/or other parameters. The femtocell may operate according to the received parameters to provide access for a plurality of access terminals in a local area.

A mobile station for notification of a circuit switched event. The mobile station includes a circuit switched modem, a packetized data modem, a radio, and a tune away controller. The circuit switched communicates circuit switched data over a circuit switched network. The packetized data modem communicates packetized data over a packetized data network. The radio couples the packetized data modem to the packetized data network via a packetized data radio link, and couples the circuit switched modem to the circuit switched network via a circuit switched radio link. Only one of the links may be active at a time. The tune away controller is coupled to the circuit switched modem and to the packetized data modem, and indicates tune away events over the packetized data network so that the circuit switched event is processed by the mobile station. The tune away controller directs switching between the links.

A system and method for creating a localized silence area. A mobile device may be registered with an access point base station. Any direct communication links from the mobile device to any other base stations may be removed. An indication may be given to the mobile device that the mobile device is in a localized silence zone. The indication may include a request that the mobile device operate in a silent mode, information about making outgoing calls, information about receiving incoming calls, or a combination of these. Procedures for incoming voice calls to the mobile device may be different for different priority levels.

Automatic provisioning of an access point base station or femtocell. Time synchronization of an access point base station. The method may include receiving an assignment message from a service provider comprising a plurality of parameters. The plurality of parameters may include an access point base station frequency assignment, a network identifier, an access point base station identifier, a neighbor list, a PN offset, and/or a scrambling code. The access point base station may then synchronize with the macro base station. Synchronizing may include searching for a strongest macro base station in the neighbor list, synchronizing a long code of the access point base station to the macro base station, estimating a propagation delay between the macro base station and the access point base station, and initializing a state of the access point base station PN code using the propagation delay to provide system time synchronization.

An adaptively-tuned filter (80) for use within the receiver (14) of a multiple-access code division (CDMA) communication system permits spectrally-inefficient transmissions to be made from each transmitter (12) used with such system, thereby simplifying the transmitter circuits, yet still achieves a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that approaches the SNR achieved when spectrally-efficient transmissions are made. The adaptive filter (80) also compensates for signal distortions resulting from multiple signal paths. The receiver (14) includes RF receiving circuits (60, 62), a matched filter (64), downconversion circuits (66, 68, 92), sampling circuits (70, 71, 72), a time acquisition circuit (76), an adaptive filter (80), a decimator circuit (75), a despreader circuit (77), and an accumulator circuit (78). The adaptive filter (80) includes, e.g., two LMS gradient filters (96a, 96b), or equivalent, that operate independently in parallel, with an accurate bit decision being used to select the tap signals to be used as the starting point for the next bit. The filters (80, 96) function as a fractionally-spaced chip-MSE equalizer that improves the bit-SNR in the presence of sufficient multi-access noise, and also provides narrowband noise rejection.

A direct-sequence multiple-access code division (DS-CDMA) communication system accommodates a multiplicity of separate transmitters (12) and at least one base-station receiver (14). Each transmitter generates a transmitted signal (16) at a common carrier frequency. Each transmitter has an assigned spreading code. Each bit time within the transmitted signal includes a unique signature waveform (21) generated from the spreading code that identifies the source of the transmitted signal. For a given transmitter, the transmitted signals from the other transmitters represent 'multi-access noise' that may adversely degrade the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of that transmitter's signal at the receiver. Each transmitter operates using a spectrally inefficient power spectrum, i.e., a non-flat power spectrum, that simplifies the transmitter circuits. Each transmitter includes a clock source (26), a signature waveform generator (28), a data generator (30, 32), a first multiplier (42), a low pass filter (44), and RF generator (46), a second multiplier (48), a bandpass filter (50), a power amplifier (52) and a broadcast antenna (54). The receiver processes the received waveform signal on a bit-by-bit basis in the absence of knowledge of the other transmitters' spreading codes. An adaptive linear filter (66) included within the receiver (14) operates to make the SNR for the spectrally-inefficient transmitted signals approach asymptotically the SNR that would be received from a spectrally-efficient transmitted signal. Additionally, the receiver rejects narrowband interference, thereby providing superior performance over a spectrally-efficient system with no narrowband noise rejection.
