A paper or nonwoven article is provided comprising a nonwoven web layer, wherein the nonwoven web layer comprises a plurality of fibers and a plurality of binder microfibers, wherein the binder microfibers comprise a water non-dispersible, synthetic polymer; wherein the binder microfibers have a length of less than 25 millimeters and a fineness of less than 0.5 d/f; and wherein the binder microfibers have a melting temperature that is less than the melting temperature of the fibers.

Paper and nonwoven articles comprising synthetic microfiber binders

A versatile binder comprising at least one or more sulfopolyesters is provided. These sulfopolyester binders can enhance the dry tensile strength, wet tensile strength, tear force, and burst strength of the nonwoven articles in which they are incorporated. Additionally, the water permeability of these binders can be modified as desired by blending different types of sulfopolyesters to produce the binder. Therefore, the binder can be used in a wide array of nonwoven end products and can be modified accordingly based on the desired properties sought in the nonwoven products.

Waterborne coating compositions are disclosed that include a latex emulsion polymer, and, as a reactive coalescent, a 2,2,4-trimethyl-3-oxopentanoate ester. The coating compositions of the invention have a reduced VOC content, and provide improved coalescing activity.

Methods of blocking stains on a substrate to be painted are disclosed, as are stain-blocking composites that are useful according to the disclosed methods. In a broad aspect, the methods include the steps of contacting a stained portion of the substrate with a dry film layer; applying pressure to the dry film layer to cause the dry film layer to adhere to the stained portion of the substrate and to at least a portion of the substrate adjacent the stained portion of the substrate; and subsequently coating the dry film layer and the adjacent substrate with one or more additional liquid coating layers. Stain blocking composites useful according to the methods described include a release layer, to which the pressure is applied; a dry film layer, that can be clear or pigmented, that serves to block the stain; and an optional adhesive layer, intended to assist in adhering the dry film layer to the stained portion of the substrate and to at least that portion of the substrate adjacent the stained portion of the substrate.

A waterborne acrylate-functionalized alkyd coating composition is disclosed, which includes an acrylate-functionalized alkyd resin, at least one drier, and water. The acrylate-functionalized alkyd resin comprises the reaction product of (i) a hydroxy functional alkyd resin, (ii) an acid anhydride, and (iii) a glycidyl acrylate. Methods of preparing waterborne acrylate-functionalized alkyd coating compositions are also disclosed.

A solvent-borne acrylate-functionalized alkyd coating composition is disclosed which includes an acrylate-functionalized alkyd, at least one drier, and an organic solvent. Also disclosed is a waterborne acrylate-functionalized alkyd coating composition including an acrylate-functionalized alkyd resin, at least one drier, and water. The acrylate-functionalized alkyd resin comprises the reaction product of (i) an alkyd resin having an acid number from greater than 0 to about 10 mg KOH/g, and (ii) a glycidyl acrylate. Also disclosed are methods of preparing acrylate-functionalized alkyd coating compositions, and coating compositions made by such methods.

Acrylate-functionalized alkyd compositions for fast-dry coatings

Acetoacetate-functional alkyd resins are disclosed, as are compositions including such resins in combination with at least one drier and an organic solvent. The acetoacetate-functional alkyd resin described is the reaction product of an alkyd resin with an alkyl acetoacetate. Also disclosed are methods of preparing such compositions, and uses for such compositions.

A waterborne acetoacetate-functionalized alkyd coating composition is disclosed which includes an acetoacetate-functionalized alkyd resin, at least one drier, and water. The acetoacetate-functionalized alkyd resin is the reaction product of (i) an alkyd resin, and (ii) an alkyl acetoacetate. A water-based latex of an acrylic-modified waterborne alkyd or uralkyd dispersion in water is described. The acrylic-modified waterborne alkyd or uralkyd is a hybrid resin prepared by the polymerization of at least one latent oxidatively-functional (LOF) acrylic monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd or uralkyd. Alternatively, the acrylic-modified waterborne alkyd or uralkyd is a hybrid resin prepared by shearing a mini-emulsion based on a solvent-borne alkyd or uralkyd dissolved in at least one LOF acrylic monomer. Preparation of the latexes may be achieved by emulsion polymerization of at least one latent oxidatively-functional acrylic monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd or uralkyd whereby the latent oxidative functionality of the acrylic polymer survives polymerization. Water-based latexes may also be prepared by polymerizing a sheared mini-emulsion based on a solvent-borne alkyd or uralkyd dissolved in at least one LOF acrylic monomer such that the latent oxidative functionality of the acrylic polymer survives polymerization. Such acrylic-modified waterborne alkyd or uralkyds are useful in a variety of coating compositions.

Acrylic modified waterborne alkyd or uralkyd dispersions

A water-based latex of an acrylic-modified waterborne alkyd dispersion in water is described. The acrylic-modified waterborne alkyd is a hybrid resin prepared by the polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer may also be a latent oxidatively functional (LOF) acrylic monomer. Preparation of the latexes may be achieved by emulsion polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality. Preparation of hybrid latexes which contain latent oxidative functional (LOF) acrylic monomers may also be achieved by emulsion polymerization of at least one LOF acrylic monomer in the presence of a waterborne alkyd having at least one pendant sulfonate functionality whereby the latent oxidative functionality of the acrylic polymer survives polymerization. Such acrylic-modified waterborne alkyds are useful in a variety of coating compositions.
