The specification and drawing figures describe and illustrate a system for sensing cargo loads and trailer movement that includes a mobile wireless communications system. A mobile computing platform is mounted on a remote vehicle and operatively connectable across the mobile wireless communications system. Sensor data are collected and stored in the mobile wireless communications system and the mobile computing platform, and may be transmitted across the mobile wireless communications system. At least one program is stored either in the mobile wireless communications system or the mobile computing platform, or both, for using the sensor data to determine equipment use, placement, and positioning in relation to a vehicle and sending one or more sensitivity reports to the asset manager.

The method includes sensing a cargo state change, and determining whether or not the delivery vehicle is in motion. A battery monitoring apparatus that senses battery conditions such as low battery charge, end of battery capacity, and end of battery life, and responds by taking actions such as sending messages to a remote site and/or powering down. A rechargeable battery is coupled to one or more power-consuming electrical components, including battery monitoring equipment. The battery monitoring equipment senses battery charge. In response to a low-battery-charge condition, the battery monitoring equipment transmits a battery status message to a remote site and powers-down some of the electrical components. Whenever the battery nears the end of its capacity, the monitoring equipment powers down all electronic components and awaits the application of external power. The invention also tracks the time required for the battery charge to deplete. Charge duration decreases over time, and whenever it reaches a predetermined minimum, the battery monitoring equipment transmits a representative status message to the remote site.

A remote, electronic, mobile reporting module conserves wireless transmissions in its reporting to a monitoring facility. The time at which certain messages are sent is used to convey added information. Also, when coverage is unknown, the remote module incorporates data into a coverage query in order to save the need to subsequently transmit the data in the event the monitoring facility confirms coverage.

A remote reporting unit, such as freight trailer monitoring device, generates a number of different status messages representing conditions such as door open, latitude, longitude, battery condition, and the like. The remote unit combines the status messages into an optimized output. Optimization is implemented by applying a predetermined mapping scheme to convert the status message's values into a consolidated output. Having optimized the message, the remote unit transmits the consolidated output in the form of a 'feature code' such as a code prefixed by star (*) or another conventional prefix. Telephony equipment that receives the feature code via the cellular telephone network interprets the feature codes by reversing the re-mapping process.
