System and method for mounting electronic components onto flexible substrates

Intake manifolds for an internal combustion engine and methods of using the same are disclosed. The intake manifolds accommodate the introduction of exhaust gas that has been recirculated from the main exhaust gas stream. The exhaust gas can be introduced into the intake manifold through aerodynamically shaped members that are located inside the manifold. Alternatively, the exhaust gas can be introduced into the manifold at or near the intersection of the primary runners and the plena, or the exhaust gas can be introduced into a mixing chamber located between the primary runners and the plena.

The present invention provides a self-contained vehicle powertrain that is testable before installation into a motor vehicle.

Integrated powertrain control system for large engines

There is disclosed herein an apparatus for routing electrical signals in an engine having n cylinders and an intake manifold, one embodiment of which comprises: (1) a generally rigid housing generally conforming in shape with and being removably attachable to a top surface of the intake manifold; (2) at least n carrier members attached to the housing and extending outward therefrom, wherein each carrier member is arranged in general proximity with a respective cylinder; (3) a plurality of conductive circuit traces arranged on or within an underside or other surface of the housing and on or within each carrier member; and (4) at least one input/output connector for connection to at least one of an external signal source, an external power source, an external signal destination, and an external power destination, wherein each input/output connector is attached to the housing and is electrically connected to at least one of the circuit traces. Each circuit trace carried by each carrier member terminates in a termination electrically connectable with an electrical engine element, such as an ignition coil, an electronic fuel injector, a spark plug, and/or a glow plug.

Apparatus for routing electrical signals in an engine

An integrated lighting assembly (10) includes an injection molded housing that has a base (12) with first fastening elements (22) molded thereon, a cover (18) with second fastening elements (24) molded thereon, and a substrate (16) intermediate the base and cover. An electrical circuit (30) is formed on the substrate and a lighting element (32) is attached to the electrical circuit. A reflective cone (34, 36) surrounds the lighting element to intensify its light and direct light through a diffuser lens (28) formed on the base. A reflective wall (26) on the base reflects light emanating from the diffuser lens in a predetermined pattern. Metal for the reflective surface and electrical circuit is deposited in a single operation. The base and cover are connected to the substrate by living hinges. When the cover is folded onto the base, the first and second fastening elements snap together to form a three dimensional lighting assembly.

Integrated lighting assembly

There is disclosed herein an intake manifold for a port-injected internal combustion engine, comprising: a manifold body 10 having an interior plenum 12, and a runner 14 extending outward from the manifold body 10, wherein the runner 14 has a distal end 16 and a passage 18 therethrough in communication with the plenum 12. The distal end 16 of the runner 14 has a socket 20 therein into which an EFI 50 may be operatively mounted, and a first keying feature 22 formed therein for aligning the EFI in a first predetermined orientation when the EFI is engaged with the socket 20 and keying feature 22. The manifold may further include a second keying feature 42 formed in the runner end 16 for aligning a coil-on-plug spark plug ignition coil 80 in a second predetermined orientation when the coil 80 is engaged with the second keying feature 42. The manifold may also include a means 30 for electrically connecting a signal source to the injector 50 and/or coil 80, arranged such that the EFI/coil may each be mechanically and electrically engaged with the manifold and signal source in essentially a single step.
