Embodiments of the present invention provide apparatuses and methods that help validate and process payment instruments for different products, such as but not limited to credit card payments, mortgage payments, or any other type of payment. The payment amount from a payment instrument may be determined from a multiple locations on the payment instrument. In addition, a payment amount may be determined from a remittance document that accompanies the payment instrument, such as a remittance coupon that is mailed along with a check. The amount in the remittance courtesy box, the minimum amount due, the last payment made, and the full balance remaining may all be captured and used to validate the amount on the payment instrument. Moreover, one or more confidence scores for the amounts on the payment instrument and remittance document may be used to validate the payment amount.

Payment instrument validation and processing

A system for optical character recognition pre-verification is provided. The system may review payment documents. The payment documents may include remit stubs and paper checks. The system, utilizing optical character recognition software, may determine dollar amounts on the remit stubs and the paper checks. The optical character recognition software may determine a confidence level of whether the determined amount is the same amount that the writer of the check. If the confidence level is above first predetermined threshold level of confidence and below a second predetermined threshold level of confidence, the system may present an operator with a pre-verification GUI. The pre-verification GUI may include a view of the remit stub, a view of the check, the dollar amount due, a match button and a do not match button. Upon selection of either the match or do not match button, the payment may be processed in another check-processing system.

Optical character recognition pre-verification system

A method for database retrieval is provided. The method may include receiving a history datastore. The method may include receiving a payment, i.e., a paper check. The method may include simultaneously scanning the check into a grayscale image and black and white image. The method may include reviewing each pixel on the black and white image alone and in combination with surrounding pixels to determine an arrangement of shaded pixels. When the arrangement of shaded pixels is determined to be above a predetermined threshold of similarity to a predefined set of characters, the method may determine a subset of characters and store the subset of characters in a memory. The method may include crawling the history datastore to determine information which corresponds to the subset of characters stored in memory and retrieving the corresponding information. The method may include showing the corresponding information and the payment on a GUI.

Database retrieval system

Apparatus, methods, media and code for routing a mail item part are provided. A receiver device may electronically receive: an indication that a first mail item part of a mail item is a check; an indication that a second mail item part of a mail item is a payment coupon; and an indication that a third mail item part of a mail item is a message. A processor device may: route the first mail item part and the second mail item part to a first destination; and route the third mail item part to a second destination that corresponds to terms in the message.

Routing different parts of a mail item to different destinations

Apparatus, methods, media and code for routing a mail item are provided. A conveyor in mechanical communication with a mail item registration station may include a processor for registering a first part of the mail item. The processor may: determine that: the first part is a payment part; and a second part that corresponds to the first part is exceptional; identify a destination that corresponds to the first part; and route the first part to the destination along with an indication corresponding to the missing second part.

Routing incomplete mail items

Apparatus, methods, media and code for routing a mail item part are provided. A receiver may receive an image of the mail item part. A processor may decompose a segment of the mail item part into a string vector; quantify a first closeness between the string vector and a first library vector that corresponds to a first mail item part destination; and quantify a second closeness between the string vector and a second library vector that corresponds to a second mail item part destination; and link to the image routing information to route the mail item part to that of the first and second mail item part destinations that corresponds to the greatest of the first and second closeness. A transmitter may transmit the image to that of the first and second mail item part destinations that corresponds to the greatest of the first and second closeness.

Routing of an unknown mail item

Apparatus, methods, media and code for routing a mail item are provided. The apparatus may include a processor device; and machine readable memory. The processor device may be configured to: assign a unique destination identifier to an organizational entity; aggregate into an aggregate documents that were addressed to the entity and received by the entity; and store in the machine readable memory the unique destination identifier and a library that includes unique terms in the aggregate.

Apparatus, methods, media and code for routing mail items to different destinations. A driven mail conveyor may receive: a first mail item that includes a paper envelope displaying in an addressee segment an institution name and institution address information, the first mail item including a first part; and a second mail item that includes a paper envelope displaying in the addressee segment the institution name and the institution address information and no other institution address information, the second mail item including a second part. A processor may electronically route, based on a first text string vector of the first part, the first mail item to a first mail item destination in the institution; and, based on a second text string vector of the second part, the second mail item to a second mail item destination in the institution.

Routing from a mail sorting assembly similarly addressed mail items to different destinations

A method for data processing comprising may include receiving a paper instruction at a CS and stamping the paper instruction with a predetermined batch number at the CS. The method may further include transferring the paper instruction to a data element at the CS and constructing an executable electronic data record. The method may include creating a transaction identification number for the record and appending the transaction identification number to the record. The method may include transmitting the record from the RS to a CPS and receiving the record at the CPS. The method may include storing the transaction identification number and the batch identification number of the record in a CPS-table of records and executing the record at the CPS. The method may include transmitting the executed record from the CPS to a DRS, following a discrete lapse of time from the receipt of the record.

Methods and apparatus for data recovery following a service interruption at a central processing station

Apparatus for electronically notifying an individual of an incomplete transaction associated with a received correspondence item is provided. The apparatus may include a receiver for receiving a single paper correspondence item associated with a first correspondence. The apparatus may include a processor for deriving a digital image from the paper correspondence item. The processor may be configured to determine, based on the derived digital image, whether the correspondence item is a paper check. In response to the determination of the correspondence item as a paper check, the processor may be further configured to use a real-time notification channel to notify the individual of receipt of the paper check. The notification may be based, at least in part, on the identification of the individual. The processor may be further configured to use the real-time notification channel to present at least one option for identification of an account to which the check should be applied.

Granular, user-accessible paper payment processing indicators

Apparatus, methods, media and code for applying a mailing label are provided. The apparatus may include a mail receipt conveyor; a mail registration station that is configured to receive from the mail receipt conveyor a mail item that includes on an exterior surface of an envelope a printed message indicating that a customer name appearing on the mail item does not correspond to an address on the mail item; an imaging device that is configured to capture a delivery error segment of the surface; a processor device that is configured to identify an electronic mail address that corresponds to a customer name in the addressee segment of the surface; and a transmitter device that is configured to transmit to the email address an electronic form for electronically receiving a different address.

Correction of customer mailing information

Aspects of the disclosure relate to providing apparatus and methods for processing co-mingled paper correspondence received at a central location. Apparatus and methods provide an ability to co-mingle paper correspondence and corresponding digital images of the paper correspondence. Apparatus and methods provide an ability to translate transaction information extracted from the co-mingled correspondence to a payment time. Apparatus and methods provide may utilize custom scan templates to improve a reliability and accuracy of information extracted from co-mingled correspondence.

Processing of co-mingled paper correspondence

A method for check destruction tracking and reconstruction relates to tracking the destruction of financial institution items, such as paper checks. The method includes transferring the financial institution items to a bin for transporting the items to be destroyed. The bin is associated with a bin identifier. The items which are in the bin are identified and the bin is transported for destruction. If the items are safely transported and safely destroyed, a notification of destruction of the items in the bin is sent. If the items are either not safely transported or not safely destroyed, a notification of an incident is sent. Appropriate action may be taken in response to receiving such notification.

Check destruction tracking and reconstruction

An image processing system requires that both a data file and an image file are received before the item is sent to a posting system. When a data file including an image is received, the system determines if the image was properly and timely received. If the file was properly received, the file is interpreted to ascertain whether the image has been previously tested and passed image quality analysis or if it requires testing by the receiving institution. If testing is required the image is sent through image quality analysis (IQA) to determine if the image meets an acceptable quality standard. If the image passes IQA, it is passed to the institution's posting process. If the image does not pass IQA and the failure is not overridden, the item is returned to the presenting institution. The system prevents the posting of the transaction and corresponding image until a quality image is received and approved.
