A bit-patterned magnetic media (BPM) includes with respect to each data track a first sub-track and a second sub-track, each sub-track comprised of a plurality of bit-islands. A transducer head placed over a data track generates a readback signal. Channel response circuitry demodulates the readback signal and detects fine positioning information based on a comparison of a readback signal generated in response to the first sub-track and a readback signal generated in response to the second sub-track.

Based on the amplitude-modulated readback signal, channel response circuitry detects the pattern of regular bit-islands and large bit-islands associated with a particular data track. Based on the detected pattern, the channel response circuitry is able to uniquely identify the data track.

A method and system determines the position of a transducer head based on permanent servo marks in which the width of the permanent servo marks is greater than the width of the data tracks they are used to identify. The method includes receiving readback signals in response to the permanent servo marks arranged as a number of null bursts and generating position error signals with respect to each null burst. Region based information is extracted based on the position error signals, and the region based information is used in conjunction with the position error signals to generate region-based displacement estimates with respect to each null burst. The region-based estimates are then combined to generate a final displacement estimate that describes the estimated distance between a transducer head and the centerline of a desired data track.

A track accessing mechanism includes a track accessing arm actuable by a primary actuation device for accessing concentric data tracks on a storage medium and at least one slider attached to the track accessing arm. The at least one slider includes a servo head configured to read positional information from a plurality of continuous, concentric rings radially spaced apart from each other on a storage medium and a data head configured to read and write user data to the least one concentric data track. At least a portion of each ring includes servo information. The at least one data track is positioned between each continuous, concentric ring on the storage medium.
