A power converter assembly includes a housing, a cold plate in the housing, and a set of power converter components on the cold plate. The cold plate is configured to receive a coolant. A first medium in the housing surrounds the cold plate and components. An expandable heat transfer structure is attached to one of the cold plate and the housing.

Thermal management system for a power converter

An approach for facilitating mechanical and electrical connection of electric machines and electrical components in an electrical system using connectors with quick connect/disconnect electrical connectors is disclosed. Each quick connect/disconnect electrical connector can be placed on the end of an electrical power distribution cable that connects with an electric machine or electrical component. The electric machines and electrical components and the electrical power distribution cables can have hollow coolant passages formed therein to receive cooling fluid from a cooling device for direct cooling of the electric machines, electrical components and the electrical power distribution cables.

Mechanical and electrical connection of electric machines and electrical components in an electrical system using quick connect/disconnect connectors

An electric machine having an electrically insulative manifold is disclosed. In one example aspect, an electric machine includes a non-electrically conductive manifold. The manifold defines a chamber operable to receive a cooling fluid. The electric machine includes a prime winding in fluid communication with the chamber and one or more secondary windings in electrical communication with the prime winding and in fluid communication with the chamber. Further, the electric machine includes an electric machine terminal extending through the non-electrically conductive manifold and coupled with the prime winding. The electric machine terminal can provide or collect cooling fluid from the chamber of the manifold and can act as the electrical connection point for directing electrical power to or from the windings of the electric machine. The non-electrically conductive manifold electrically decouples the windings of the electric machine despite each winding receiving cooling fluid provided or collected at the manifold.

Electric machine having an electrically insulative manifold

In an embodiment, a three-level active neutral-point clamped (ANPC) converter system is provided. The system includes first and second Direct Current (DC)-bus structures that include at least one of a number of DC-bus capacitors on printed circuit boards (PCBs). The PCBs are laminated together with an air gap (e.g., one or more millimeters) in between for a thermal dissipation and an insulation creepage. The three DC-bus terminals include PCBs, and are electrically connected to the three-level power converter, which are typically mounted on a heatsink or a cold plate.

Compact design of multilevel power converter systems

A method for shutting down a phase-leg of a three-level active neutral point clamped converter is provided. The method includes the following steps. A determining step determines if a switch fault has occurred, and if a switch fault has occurred then each switch of the plurality of switches are turned off. If a switch fault has not occurred and a shutdown is requested, then an operating step operates the plurality of switches to turn off a first switch and a fourth switch. A waiting step waits for a first predetermined time period. An operating step operates the plurality of switches to turn on a second switch and a third switch. A waiting step is repeated. An operating step operates the plurality of switches to turn off a fifth switch and a sixth switch. A waiting step is repeated. An operating step turns off the second switch and the third switch.

Method for shutdown of an active neutral point clamped converter

A power converter for a power system includes an input ceramic layer, an output ceramic layer, an input stage coupled to the input ceramic layer, an output stage coupled to the output ceramic layer, and a planar transformer coupled between said input stage and said output stage. The input receives a power input and the output stage generates a power output at least partially as a function of the power input. The planar transformer includes an input winding coupled to the input stage and an output winding coupled to the output stage. The input winding has a plurality of input turns and the output winding has a plurality of output turns. The input turns interleave the output turns.

A self-contained regenerative power system includes a fuel cell operative to generate electric energy from hydrogen and oxygen, generating water as a byproduct, and an electrolyzer operative to generate hydrogen and oxygen from water by consumption of electric energy. A bi-directional DC-to-DC converter interfaces between the fuel cell and the electrolyzer on one side and the system to be powered on the other. A switch selectively connects either the fuel cell or the electrolyzer with the bi-directional DC-to-DC converter. The products of the fuel cell process can be supplied to the electrolyzer process, and vice versa. Alternately, the self-contained regenerative power system comprises a unitary fuel cell and electrolyzer.

An apparatus for anti-islanding protection of a distributed generation with respect to a feeder connected to an electrical grid is disclosed. The apparatus includes a sensor adapted to generate a voltage signal representative of an output voltage and/or a current signal representative of an output current at the distributed generation, and a controller responsive to the signals from the sensor. The controller is productive of a control signal directed to the distributed generation to drive an operating characteristic of the distributed generation out of a nominal range in response to the electrical grid being disconnected from the feeder.

An apparatus for controlling a microturbine, the apparatus including: a rectifier adapted for converting at least one generated voltage from the microturbine to a DC link voltage; an inverter adapted for converting the DC link voltage to at least one inverter output voltage, the at least one inverter output voltage being electrically coupled to an external power bus; a starter drive adapted for converting at least one starter input voltage to at least one starter output voltage, the at least one starter input voltage being electrically coupled to the external power bus, the at least one starter output voltage being electrically coupled to the microturbine.
