A wireless RF data transmission system has at least one base station transmitting control information on a control channel and high speed data on at least one data channel. At least one subscriber station receives the control information and data channels, adjusting a modulation and/or coding of reception of the data in response to the control information. Preferably, the control information is transmitted using a more robust modulation, such as QPSK, than used to transmit the data, which is preferably transmitted using either 16, 64 or 256 QAM. Additionally, timing or header information for the date may be included on the control channel.

System and method for stacking receiver channels for increased system through-put in an RF data transmission system

A wireless RF data transmission system has at least one base station transmitting control information on a control channel and high speed data on at least one data channel. At least one subscriber station receives the control information and data channels, adjusting a modulation and/or coding of reception of the data in response to the control information. Preferably, the control information is transmitted using a more robust modulation, such as QPSK, than used to transmit the data, which is preferably transmitted using either 16, 64 or 256 QAM. Additionally, timing or header information for the data may be included on the control channel.

A wireless RF data transmission system subscriber station has a fixed, overhead bracket secured, spindle. An open sided housing is rotatably mounted to the spindle. The housing has a finned heat sink and is interiorly coated with heat absorbing paint. Emissions shielding enclosures secured within the housing house an RF transceiver. An antenna array mounted to an enclosure is operatively connected to the transceiver through the enclosures for communicating RF data signals. An A/D-D/A board is mounted to an enclosure on an opposite side from the array. A radome is secured over a face of the array, sealed to the housing by a carbon impregnated gasket. An electric motor mounted within the housing and operatively engaging the spindle is controlled by antenna aiming logic for aiming the station and its array. An orifice sealed with a waterproof, breathable membrane allows moisture to escape the housing and prevents moisture infiltration.

Systems and methods adapted to optimize data throughput in wireless communications network are shown and described. In the preferred embodiment multiple antenna beam base stations are utilized to provide reuse of communications channels. Reuse of the communications channels by the base stations is preferably optimized by considering mutually exclusive antenna beam pairs and antenna beam pairs providing reduced signal quality. A preferred embodiment control channel is taught which provides for the initial and subsequent identification and use of a most preferred antenna beam for establishing communications. Alternative embodiments of the invention utilize multiple antenna beam remote stations.

High speed fixed wireless voice/data systems and methods

Disclosed is a system utilizing a multi-beam antenna that switches the beams to a CDMA demodulation receiver in such a way that the best beams are selected. The transmit path takes the traffic channel outputs from the CDMA modulators and maps each traffic channel to the subset of beams that have the best path to the mobile in the forward link. Accordingly, the system operates to reduce interference on both the forward and reverse links, as well as to increase the capacity of both the forward and reverse links. The system also is capable of providing flexible dynamic shaping of the cell and the sectors by mapping the appropriate overhead channels on the forward link and the reverse link in different combinations of beams to sectors in order to shape the cell. Adaptive arrays may be utilized to form radiation patterns, for which the azimuthal width and/or length of a sector may be adjusted by way of adjustments of the relative amplitude and phase of signal components of signals at antennas of a phased array adaptively controlled according to communication parameters such as information indicating the quality of the communication channel on that sector, interference from other channels or the number of calls serviced in particular sectors.

Embedded digital beam forming

A system for mitigating the effects of interference in an unlicensed RF band for point to point data transmissions comprises a multibeam antenna locating interference with transmission to and from data transmission subscribers. A scanner determines the frequency, bandwidth and any periodicity of the interference. Separate scanners can be used for each antenna beam. Nulls are generated in the data transmission antenna pattern in the direction of the interference during periods of interference. Communications with subscribers in a direction of the interference is carried out using a different channel or is scheduled around the interference occurrences. Alternatively, such subscribers are directed to establish data transmissions with an alternate hub antenna.

Adaptive beam pattern antennas system and method for interference mitigation in point to multipoint RF data transmissions

A system and method providing narrow antenna beam polarity and/or angular diversity for subscriber stations in a point-to-multipoint RF data transmission system employs a subscriber multibeam antenna. Coangular pairs of antenna beams have orthogonal polarity and each pair is angularly diverse. The subscriber transceiver uses a plurality of inputs and at least one output. Polarization diversity for a subscriber is provided by employing one of the coangular pairs of antenna beams to receive corresponding polarization diverse signals from a hub. Angular diversity is provided by receiving transmissions on two angularly diverse beams from two hubs. At a hub the bit error rate of transmissions from a subscriber and/or signal levels of available frequencies with different polarizations are monitored and the optimal beam, frequency and polarization for transmissions from the subscriber are determined. Changes in frequency, beam or polarization for transmissions to the hub are communicated to the subscriber.

System and method for narrow beam antenna diversity in an RF data transmission system

A system and method for providing a particular wireless communication signal appearing within an antenna beam to a cellular base station to the exclusion of other communication signals also appearing within the antenna beam is disclosed. Preferably multiple narrow antenna beams are utilized to target a communication unit sourcing the particular communication signal. Signals provided by these multiple narrow beams are filtered to exclude undesired communication signals appearing therein and then are provided to select inputs of the cellular base station. Preferably the system of the disclosed invention is adapted to substantially universally couple to various cellular base station configurations.

Universal wideband switchless channel selector

A receiving system is disclosed which includes at least one antenna providing a plurality of antenna beams providing signal diversity between communicated signals. A first processing branch is included for processing a first plurality of signals appearing within a first plurality of the antenna beams. The first processing branch includes a plurality of signal paths, some of which include delays , each receiving a one of the first plurality of signals from a corresponding one of the first plurality of antenna beams. Delays apply a predetermined amount of delay proportionate to the corresponding one of the beams. First processing branch further includes a combiner for combining the first plurality of signals after output from the plurality of signal paths. A second processing branch is provided for processing a second plurality of signals appearing within a second plurality of the antenna beams. Second processing branch includes a plurality of signal paths, some of which include delays , each receiving one of the second plurality of signals from a corresponding one of the second plurality of antenna beams. Delays applying a pre-selected amount of delay to the corresponding one of the beams. Second processing branch further includes a combiner for combining the second plurality of signals after output from the plurality of signal paths. Finally, a radio is provided having a first port coupled to an output of first processing branch and a second port coupled to a second processing branch

Polarization and angular diversity among antenna beams

A system and method are disclosed for dynamically sizing sectors of a multi-sectored radiation pattern. The disclosed invention teaches the use of multiple narrow beams composited to form a radiation pattern. Signals associated with each such narrow beam may be provided to inputs of a scan receiver or signaling radio which inputs are associated with a particular sector of the radiation pattern. The number of narrow beam signals provided inputs associated with a particular sector defines the azimuthal width of that sector. By altering the number of narrow beam signals provided each such input, the azimuthal width of the sectors may be adjusted. The disclosed invention also teaches the use of attenuators in the signal path between the narrow beams and the scan receiver or signalling radio. By adjusting these attenuators, the effective length of the sectors may be adjusted.

Antenna deployment sector cell shaping system and method

A system and method for accurately determining the position of a mobile unit operating within a predefined service area is disclosed. Three embodiments of the present invention are disclosed which teach the use of one, two and three narrow beam base transceiver stations in the determination of a mobile unit's position. Where one base station is utilized, an information map of signal attributes is used in the position determination. Where two and three base stations are used, signal strength measurements in combination with the time difference of arrival of a signal at the various base stations are used in the position determination.

System and method of determining a mobile station's position using directable beams

A system and method are disclosed for improving trunking efficiency of a sectored cell by providing overlapping sectors. The disclosed invention teaches the use of multiple narrow beams composited to form a radiation pattern. Signals associated with each such narrow beam may be provided to inputs of a base station signal quality measuring device for assigning a mobile to a particular sector during call origination which inputs are associated with a particular sector of the radiation pattern. The number of narrow beam signals provided inputs associated with a particular sector defines the azimuthal width of that sector. By providing a same antenna beam signal to multiple sector inputs, overlapping sectors are defined.
