A thermally imagable business record, such as a form, label, tag, or the like is provided which may be activated to form human and/or machine readable images as well as different colored images. The record comprises a substrate having a thermally imagable coating on substantially its entire surface which forms a first color when activated, and having a desensitized area on at least one area of its surface which may be overcoated with a thermally imagable coating capable of forming a different color upon activation than the first thermally imagable coating. The first thermally imagable coating provides images which are of machine readable quality, while the additional thermally imagable coatings provide images of a different color to designate selected areas on the form or label to a user.

A thermally imagable business record such as a form, tag, label or the like is provided in which selected areas of the record may be activated to form an image upon exposure to heat. In one embodiment, at least one selected area of a substrate surface contains a thermally imagable coating of initially colorless color formers and color developers while the remaining areas of the substrate are left uncoated. The substrate may be pre-coated to provide a smooth, non-porous base coat for the thermally imagable coating, and may also include a protective coating layer to protect the subsequently printed thermal image.

A security document is provided containing a color-forming composition having an insulating material therein which allows the document to be passed through heated printing devices such as laser printers without the problem of premature color development. The color-forming composition includes a mixture of a color former, a color developer, and an insulating material. In a preferred embodiment, a toner adhesion-enhancing composition containing an insulating material is applied over the color-forming composition. The security document may be used to provide an authentication feature and/or an indication of attempted alterations from the use of solvents, heat or abrasion.

A linerless continuous series of pressure sensitive adhesive labels is provided which have on one or more selected portions thereof a series of imagable coatings which may be activated to form colored images or areas. The series of labels include a web having first and second surfaces, with a series of imagable coatings of color formers and color developers on the first surface of the web. A coating of a release material overlies the imagable coatings on the first surface of the substrate, and a coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive is positioned on the second surface of the web. The series of labels are wound or stacked so that the coating of pressure sensitive adhesive contacts the release material to permit individual labels to be dispensed.

The invention described in the specification relates to latent image printing and developing systems and to substrates containing latent images. High quality latent images are prepared by a printing method which deposits a layer containing organic-based dye particles and organic-based developer particles, each having a particle size of from about 2 to about 6 microns, on a substrate. The image is then developed by contacting the substantially invisible image of dye and developer particles with an oxygenated solvent from an imaging device. Multicolor, vivid images are obtained as a result of the image printing and developing system of the invention.

A business record such as a form, tag, label or the like is provided in which different selected colored areas may be activated in a single pass through a printer. In one embodiment, coatings of initially colorless color formers and color developers are coated on selected areas of a substrate surface. The color formers and color developers combine upon exposure to an imaging force, such as heat or pressure, to form different colored visible areas on the sheet. In an alternative embodiment, the coatings of color formers and color developers are self-contained coatings having pressure-rupturable microcapsules containing either the color formers or said color developers.

A security coating for business documents printed using noncontact as well as impact printing devices is provided which enhances the adhesion of toner particles and/or ink to a document substrate. Other security features may be also be added to the coating to provide a dual-function coating which also provides visible evidence of tampering, either by the application of solvents, mechanical abrasion, heat, or when pressure is applied.

Carbonless coating compositions which can be printed onto one or more sheets of a business form or mailer to provide a visible image which is sharper and darker than previous coatings are provided. A document is provided having a solvent sensitive and/or pressure sensitive ink printed thereon which reacts to the application of a solvent and/or pressure to form a visible stain or image. The ink includes a first composition of solvent soluble, water insoluble dye particles, a binder, and optionally, an opacifier. Alternatively, the first composition may be combined with a second composition which includes an encapsulated solvent and optionally a stilting material. The first and second compositions may be printed on the document in separate steps or printed together as a self-contained composition. The ink may be printed on the entire surface of the document or only on selected areas thereof.

An initially colorless, chemically sensitive protective ink which can be readily printed or applied onto a document substrate and which reacts upon contact with an oxidizing agent to form a noticeable color change is provided. The protective ink, when printed onto a document, resists leaching by water for an extended period of time, both before and after contact with oxidizing agents, and provides visible evidence of any attempted tampering. The leach-resistant ink includes a colorless material which becomes colored upon contact with an oxidizing agent and a complexing agent which reacts to form a complex with the colorless material. A fixing agent which promotes insolubilization and fixing of the complex to the document substrate is also provided.

A confidential information bearing article comprising a cover sheet adhered to a base sheet is provided which is capable of providing hidden confidential information to a recipient. Through the use of camouflage, obscuring, and opacifying and reflectivity increasing coatings, the paper used for the mailer becomes effectively opaque, and information printed on the inside of the article is substantially unreadable from the outside. The article includes an adhesive for securing the base sheet and cover sheet and perforations along the edges to assist the recipient in opening the article.
