A hot melt adhesive composition, comprising a blend of components including about 5% to about 50% by weight of an olefin block copolymer; about 10% to about 70% by weight of a first tackifying resin having a softening point of at least about 95&#xb0; C.; about 0 to 65% of a second tackifying resin that is different than the first tackifying resin; about 0% to about 60% by weight of a plasticizer; about 0% to about 20% by weight of an aromatic reinforcing resin having a softening point equal to or higher than 115&#xb0; C.; about 0.1% to about 5% by weight of a stabilizer; and about 1% to about 40% by weight of a secondary polymer that is different from the olefin block copolymer, the first and second tackifying resins and the reinforcing resin, having relatively low crystallinity, which low crystallinity is equal to or less than 250 Joules/gram, wherein the components total 100% by weight of the composition, and the viscosity of the composition is equal to or less than about 20,000 mPa&#xb7;s at 163&#xb0; C. Laminates, especially those used in disposable soft goods, and methods of making such laminates using the hot melt adhesive composition are also described. The adhesive composition and/or laminate may be used in making a variety of end products such as a disposable diaper, a sanitary napkin, a bed pad, a bandage, a surgical drape, a tape, a label, a plastic sheet, a nonwoven sheet, a paper sheet, a cardboard, a book, a filter, or a package.

Hot melt adhesive based on olefin block copolymers

Multipurpose hot melt adhesive compositions which are suitable for use as both a construction and elastic attachment adhesive for disposable soft goods, such as disposable diapers, feminine sanitary napkins, surgical drapes, hospital pads, and adult incontinent products. The multipurpose hot melt adhesive compositions have a high level of creep resistance, high bond strength, and relatively low viscosity, and are composed of endblock resin in combination with a linear styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) copolymer wherein the copolymer has a styrene content greater than about 35% by weight, and preferably about 38% to about 50% by weight.

High styrene SBS hot melt adhesive

A dual component molding assembly for packaging hot melt adhesives wherein a mold, preferably in the form of an open top pan, includes a cavity which is lined with a thin film of plastic material. The mold has openings formed therein which communicate with the cavity to facilitate vacuum forming of the film to the cavity's interior surface. The second component is a carrier for the mold and is also preferably in the form of an open top pan. The carrier also includes a cavity for receiving the mold, and functions not only to support the mold when nested therein, but also to act as a heat sink to effectively and rapidly remove, dissipate or absorb the heat from molten adhesive dispensed into the mold. After filling the mold with a mass of adhesive, the exposed open top surface of the adhesive is covered with a second layer of thin film of plastic material which is then sealed to the first film lining the interior of the mold. After cooling, the packaged adhesive is cut adjacent the seal to form individual adhesive blocks for further processing.

Apparatus for packaging hot melt adhesives using a mold and carrier

Hydrophilic hot melt adhesive compositions suitable for a variety of applications, especially in nonwoven disposable articles, are prepared by blending various adhesive components with a surfactant. The surfactant has a hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) number of less than 15, and is incorporated into the composition in an amount such that the resultant adhesive has a contact angle of 75&#xb0; of less, and preferably less than about 40&#xb0;. A low contact angle is desirable so that water, urine or other water-based discharges, upon contacting a laminate bound together by the adhesive, wets out rather than beads up resulting in the fluid being directed away from the adhesive and towards an absorbent core of the disposable article.

Hydrophilic hot melt adhesive

Hot melt adhesive compositions suitable for a variety of applications, especially in nonwoven disposable articles, are prepared by blending various adhesive components with a bacteriostat. The bacteriostat is incorporated into the adhesive compositions in sufficient amounts to inhibit the growth of various microorganisms, particularly bacteria. The preferred bacteriostat is triclosan in amounts of 0.01% to 5% by weight.

Antimicrobial hot melt adhesive

The present invention provides a method of making a laminated, gathered, elastic web. The method includes the steps of feeding a first substrate in a machine direction, feeding a second substrate aligned with the first substrate in the machine direction, and feeding an array of elastomeric strand material between the first and second substrates in such a manner that the elastomeric strand material is stretched in the machine direction and aligned with the first and second substrates. A hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive, such as a styrene-isoprene-styrene based adhesive, is applied to one substrate, and a curable adhesive, such as a polyurethane based adhesive, is applied to the other substrate. Thereafter, the two substrates and the elastomeric strand material are compressed to form a laminate elastic web while maintaining the elastomeric strand material in its stretched state. Machine direction tension is maintained on the laminate until the hot melt adhesive cools and bonds the layers together. Thereafter, the machine direction tension is released to permit the elastic web to contract to form a gathered elastic web.

Unlike typical hot melt adhesives, the present composition can withstand high peel and shear loads at elevated temperatures for extended periods of time without experiencing catastrophic bond failure. The composition includes polybutylene polymer or a mixture of polybutylene and polyolefin polymers, and a stabilizer, with the remaining ingredients chosen from one or more of a polyolefin polymer, a tackifier resin, a plasticizer, or a wax. The hot melt adhesive composition can be applied using common application techniques such as extruding or spraying.

Hot melt adhesive with high peel and shear strengths for nonwoven applications

A polybutylene-based hot melt adhesive composition having a variety of end uses, particularly in construction and elastic attachment applications on nonwoven disposable articles. Unlike typical hot melt adhesives, the present composition can withstand exposure to emollients such as mineral oil and other oil-based ointments without experiencing catastrophic bond failure. The composition includes a polybutylene-based polymer or a mixture of a polybutylene-based polymer and a polyalphaolefin polymer, a tackifier resin, a plasticizer, a wax and a stabilizer. The hot melt adhesive composition can be applied using common application techniques such as extruding or spraying.

Nonwoven absorbent article containing an emollient resistant

An alkali soluble hot melt composition for melt blowing applications is described which maintains a viscosity of at least 50,000 cp at temperatures of 350.degree. F. The adhesive composition in cludes about 20% to about 95%, by weight, of an alkali soluble polymer; about 0% to about 50%, by weight, of a crystalline resin; about 0-50% by weight, of a suitable filler; and about 0% to about 50%, by weight, of a suitable plasticizer.

pH sensitive thermoplastic binder

A method of utilizing microwave energy in the manufacture of disposable nonwoven absorbent articles such as diapers and feminine care products. More specifically, the traditional hot melt adhesives utilized in the production of disposable nonwoven absorbent articles are replaced by adhesives that are microwave sensitive, and which can be activated by microwave energy to provide strong bonds for the finished article.

A hot melt construction adhesive having a high acid number and which possesses superior properties for the construction of disposable soft goods. The adhesive composition includes an A-B-A block copolymer; a resin; a compatible mineral oil; and an antioxidant; and wherein the hot melt construction adhesive has a viscosity of less than 10,000 cP at 325.degree. F., a melting point of less than 190.degree. F., and an acid number of greater than 30.

Hot melt adhesive having a high acid number for disposable soft goods

A hot melt adhesive is described which possesses superior properties for the construction of disposal soft articles and more specifically disposable soft articles which may be exposed to moisture for prolonged periods of time. The adhesive composition includes about 10% to about 60% by weight of a butene-1-ethylene copolymer; about 20% to about 80% by weight of a tackifying resin; about 5% to about 30% by weight of a plasticizer; and about 0.1% to about 3% by weight of an antioxidant, wherein the ingredients total 100%, by weight, of the entire adhesive composition.

Hot melt adhesive having improved wet strength

A hot melt adhesive composition is described which possesses properties which are desirable with respect to the construction of disposable articles. The adhesive composition includes about 10% to about 80%, by weight, of an alkali soluble polymer; about 0 to about 30%, by weight, of a poly (vinyl methyl ether); about 30% to about 70%, by weight, of a tackifying resin; and about 5% to about 30%, by weight, of a suitable plasticizer.

Hot melt adhesive composition

Hot melt construction adhesives are described which possess superior properties for the construction of disposable soft articles. The adhesive compositions include an SIS copolymer containing at least about 25% styrene, a compatible tackifying resin, a plasticizing oil and an effective amount of a stabilizer.
