A packet is communicated between a first node and a second node by assigning a plurality of packet fragments to a plurality of communication links connecting the first node and the second node, respectively, such that respective sizes of the plurality of packet fragments are based on respective bandwidths of the plurality of communication links. A centralized cross-connect (DS0)-time slot routing scheme for multiple bandwidth communication circuit cards is executed by a supervisory control card installed in a distributed backplane of a time division multiplex (TDM)-based communication system equipment shelf. The distributed backplane supports a plurality of TDM time slots, and has a plurality of card slots in which communication circuits cards are installed. A relational database provides a transport association among the TDM time slots of the backplane and DS0 communication channels of communication circuits cards that allows any DS0 communication channel of any port of any communication circuit card to be associated with any TDM communication transport time slot of the backplane. The supervisory control card controls the transport of DS0 communication channels in selected TDM communication transport time slots in accordance with the contents of the relational database.

An ATM information system processes information at the frame level using a processor including a device driver; a system memory and an adapter for sorting data cells into partially completed frames stored in the system memory using control information provided by the device driver. A controller in the adapter determines when an end of frame indication is received in a cell and updates a pointer in system memory for a completed frame list to a recently completed frame. The device driver processes frames in a completed frame list according a priority of the list. The device driver processing is independent of the sorting and storing of completed frames received in the system memory which improves the performance of the driver and the ability to handle delay sensitive traffic.

An ATM communications network includes a system processor having a device driver and a memory coupled to an adapter at an interface. Frames stored in the memory are transmitted to the network using a transmit ready queue residing in the adapter and defined by transmit control registers. The frames are linked together by descriptors and pointers to received ready lists maintained by the device driver. A transmit frame complete list is established in the system memory using the transmit control registers. An interrupt is generated by the adapter indicating when frame transmission is complete. Simultaneously, cells are received from the network and stored in system memory according to a free buffer list established by the device driver. A pointer is maintained by the device driver to the last entry of the receive free buffer list. The adapter maintains a pointer to the next buffer to be used from the receive free buffer list. A receive ready list is established by the device driver in system memory with the location indicated to the adapter via the receive control registers in the adapter. The receive data cells are reassembled into frames in buffers from the free buffer list. At completion of a received frame, the frame is added to an appropriate receive ready list. An interrupt is generated to the processor by the adapter when one or more completed frames reside on the receive ready list for transmission to the network.
