A method of reading codes with a reader mounted at least partially within a jacket and communicating the read codes to a handheld device also mounted at least partially within the jacket. The codes may identify a medicine, identify a patient, run an inventory, run a patient safety application, or other process control application located on the handheld device. The jacket includes an opening configured to align and engage with a display surface of the handheld device to simultaneously display being read. The jacket is portable and small and light enough to be carried by a user while working in a healthcare facility.

Scanning jacket for a handheld device

A jacket for a handheld device is disclosed. The jacket may include a housing including a receiving area for the handheld device. The housing may include an opening configured to align with a display surface of the handheld device and engaging structure disposed about the opening to engage at least a portion of the display surface of the handheld device when the device is disposed within the receiving area. The jacket may also include a connector member and a scanner. The connector member may connect to the handheld device when the handheld device is in the receiving area and the scanner may communicate with the handheld device when the handheld device is connected to the connector member.

A method of tracking an inventory comprises associating a plurality of radio frequency identification (RFID) values corresponding to a plurality of RFID tags with an inventory item, affixing the plurality of RFID tags to a plurality of surfaces of the inventory item such that antenna axes of the plurality of RFID tags are oriented in a plurality of directions, wirelessly sensing RFID tags affixed to items in the inventory using an antenna array comprising one or more antennae, and deciding, if one or more of the plurality of RFID values associated with the inventory item is sensed, that the inventory item is present in the inventory, otherwise deciding that the inventory item is not present in the inventory.

Described herein are embodiments of systems and methods for providing an automated medication handling system that can, among other things, single-dose package medications, store and dispense medications in a pharmacy, transport medications to a nursing unit or other remote location, store them at that remote location, and load them into a portable unit carried by a nurse, who may dispense the medication at a bedside.
