Throttling polling may include sending a request to an agent device and determining whether a response to the sent request is successfully received from the agent device. A result of the determination may be stored in a memory and associated with the agent device. Further, a success rate is calculated for the agent device based on a plurality of the results. A metric related to the sent request and a subsequently sent request is adjusted for the agent device in accordance with an algorithm based on the calculated success rate for the agent device. The metric may be an amount of time between the sent request and a subsequently sent request for the agent device or a number of subsequently sent requests for the agent device.

Systems and methods for throttling polling

Paging of data includes querying a table of data to determine an item identifier for each item in the table. An index table including an index identifier column of sequential integers and a corresponding item identifier column for each item in the table is generated and stored in a memory. A page index table including the item identifier that corresponds to a first index identifier and each item identifier that corresponds to one plus a pagesize multiple of the index identifier is generated and stored in a memory. A desired page of data is retrieved using the determined item identifier corresponding to the first item on the desired page and either the determined item identifier corresponding to the first item on a next page after the desired page or a determined item identifier corresponding to the last item on the desired page.

Systems and methods for efficient paging of data

Methods, systems and computer program products for testing the performance of a communication network including a plurality of endpoint nodes executing application programs which utilize the communications network are provided. A console node is provided on the network which may initiate operations by test agents executing on one or more of the plurality of endpoint nodes. The agents may generate network performance information using passive application monitoring and/or active endpoint pair based network testing responsive to scheduling instructions from the console node. Specific application programs may be designated for passive monitoring and active test protocols may be provided based on an expected type of application communication traffic. In another aspect of the present invention, one of a plurality of types of transaction models defining the beginning and ending reference point for a transaction timing measurement may be provided to the endpoint nodes for use in passive application monitoring. In a further aspect of the present invention, the endpoint nodes may be automatically discovered by the console node.

Methods, systems and computer program products for network performance testing through active endpoint pair based testing and passive application monitoring

A method and system for processing an event notification generated by a proxy managed object in a management system, where the management system includes at least one manager and at least one agent. The agent includes a proxy agent coordinator, at least one proxy agent containing one or more event forwarding discriminators, and at least one proxy managed object. The method includes the steps of providing a proxy agent identifier in the notification generated by the proxy managed object, comparing the proxy agent identifier in the notification to an identifier stored in the event forwarding discriminator, and processing the notification if the identifier in the notification matches the identifier stored in the event forwarding discriminator. A set of event forwarding discriminators on one proxy agent can be distinguished from other sets of event forwarding discriminators on other proxy agents via a unique proxy agent identifier for each proxy agent which is stored in the proxy managed object and the event forwarding discriminators, and the unique proxy agent identifier is forwarded in any notification from the proxy managed object to all of the event forwarding discriminators in the system. This method and system is transparent to the manager.

Transparent proxying of event forwarding discriminators

Problems with prior OSI (Open Systems Interconnected) event forwarding discriminators (EFD) are solved in accordance with this invention by creating a new type of EFD, called a notification forwarding discriminator (NFD). An NFD works just like an EFD in that it receives notifications emitted by managed objects and determines what types of notifications should be forwarded. However, the forwarding mechanism in an NFD is completely different. An NFD has two operations that a management application can use to control subscription to notifications, 'start' and 'stop'. An NFD forwards notifications via responses to a solicited 'start' operation without signaling the end of the 'start' operation. Hence, a 'start' operation will always be pending completion. The manager and agent track this pending status of operations between a manager and an NFD. Both the manager and agent maintain a pending completion list for each link between a manager and agent. There is a one-to-one correspondence between each manager and the link over which requests go to a given NFD through an agent. Multiple applications using the manager may send multiple start operation requests through the manager, through the agent and to the NFD.

A process of efficiently managing working storage that unifies the use of queues of fixed size free storage blocks and a global list of blocks of random size. The process implements continuous garbage collection that continually purges unused storage blocks from the fixed size queues to ensure maximum free storage availability. Data processing system throughput is enhanced by reducing the processor overhead required to allocate and return free storage blocks and by reducing the overhead required to manage temporary extensions of working storage.
