An aircraft has a flight termination system that allows flight of an unmanned aircraft to be quickly and efficiently terminated. The flight termination system separates one of the control surfaces of the aircraft, such as a wing, from a fuselage of the aircraft, while one or more other control surfaces connected to the fuselage. The separation may be accomplished by firing one or more explosive bolts to release a clamp that connects the control surface to the fuselage. The separation causes an asymmetry in configuration that results in a rapid crash of the aircraft. The flight termination system causes termination to be effected in small flight footprint, without use of powerful explosives, and without a large cost in weight or volume. The flight termination system may be used in unpowered or powered aircraft.

Methods and apparatus for reducing transmission of mechanical waves according to various aspects of the present invention comprise a set of isolators and a series of stops configured to isolate a piece of equipment in a projectile. The stops serve to limit the amount of stress loading placed on the isolators during transient events where loads associated with launch of the projectile or deployment of flight control surface might damage the isolators or cause the equipment to fail.

A projectile includes a body, a payload within the body, a target system within the body for affecting operation of the projectile, and an inductive interface which, as part of the target system, permits transfer of at least one of power and data between the target system and an external setter system. The inductive interface includes a magnetic core comprised of a compound of ferrite material and non-ferrite material and a coil wrapped around the magnetic core.

A method an apparatus for inducing spin, or rotation, in a dispersed payload of a non-spin guided projectile is taught. Rifling is applied to a cylindrical surface of a projectile casing. The rifling engages a member on a payload, which may be a bulkhead, as the payload is expelled from the projectile casing. The rotation imparted to the payload causes the dispersed projectile, grenades in the preferred embodiment, to form a spiral pattern that provides a more uniform coverage of the target area as compared to the prior art.
