A technique facilitates controlled creation of pressure waves in a downhole environment. The technique enables creation of, for example, dynamic underbalance (DUB) pressure waves or dynamic overbalance (DOB) pressure waves which can be used to perform desired activities downhole. According to an embodiment, a pump is coupled with a pressure chamber and conveyed downhole into a borehole to a desired location. The pump may be operated downhole to change a pressure level in the pressure chamber until a sufficient pressure differential exists between an interior and an exterior of the pressure chamber. A release mechanism in communication with the pressure chamber is then rapidly opened to establish the desired pressure wave as the differing pressures equalize.

System and method for creating pressure waves in a well

Systems and methods presented herein include a downhole well tool having an electromechanical joint configured to connect to a downhole well tool component within a wellbore of an oil and gas well system. The electromechanical joint is configured to rotate to facilitate connection of the electromechanical joint to the downhole well tool component. For example, the electromechanical joint includes a main body portion, a rotating ring configured to rotate relative to the main body portion to facilitate connection of the electromechanical joint to the downhole well tool component, and a sealed electrical connection configured to couple with a mating electrical connection of the downhole well tool component.

A bottom hole assembly (BHA) operable to be conveyed within a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation from a wellsite surface via coiled tubing. The BHA may operable to receive a fluid pumped from the wellsite surface via the coiled tubing. The BHA may include a fluid control tool comprising a first fluid passage extending longitudinally through the fluid control tool and a plurality of first fluid outlets extending radially between the first fluid passage and the wellbore. The fluid control tool may be selectively operable to close the first fluid passage and open the plurality of first fluid outlets to pass the fluid into the wellbore via the plurality of first fluid outlets, and close the plurality of first fluid outlets and open the first fluid passage to pass the fluid through first fluid passage. The BHA may further include a tractor operable to move the BHA along the wellbore coupled downhole from the fluid control tool. The tractor may have a second fluid passage fluidly connected with the first fluid passage. The BHA may also include a fluid outlet sub coupled downhole from the tractor having a plurality of second fluid outlets fluidly connected with the first fluid passage and extending radially outward to fluidly connect the second fluid passage and the wellbore, and a bent sub coupled downhole from the fluid outlet sub and operable for steering the BHA.

Systems and methods for performing a radial drilling operation using a shaft are disclosed. The shaft can be flexible and can be made of a series of links, each of which can have a hexagonal or other suitable shape to impart a torque along the linkage. A cable system can be run through the middle of the links and can be resiliently tensioned to permit a different degree of flexure according to the amount of tension in the cable and resilient member. Accordingly, the shaft can be rigid, selectively permitted to flex, or can be brought back to a straight or at least a less-bent position.

A connector system includes a first sub and a second sub having a landing shoulder, and the first sub carries a threaded sleeve for engaging the second sub. The first sub includes a stinger section and a flying nut that provides a sealed and torque carrying connection when secured against the landing shoulder of the second sub. The first sub may be connected to the second sub without rotation of the ends of the first sub and the second sub. In some cases the first sub and the second sub are in any angular orientation when the sealed and torque carrying connection is provided. Further, the connector system may provide a connection between two sections of a downhole tool assembly without rotating or orienting in any way the angular position of the two sections. In some cases, torque applied in a wellbore milling operation further seals the sealed joint.

A downhole tool conveyed via tubing within a wellbore at a wellsite comprises a hydraulic tool driven by fluid pumped to the hydraulic tool via the tubing. The downhole tool further comprises a valve in fluid communication between the tubing and the hydraulic tool. The valve is configurable in the wellbore between an expanded position, establishing a bypass diverting at least a portion of the pumped fluid away from the hydraulic tool, and a compressed position, closing the bypass.

Compression-actuated multi-cycle circulation valve

A downhole hydraulic tool employing multiple nozzles in a selectable fashion from an oilfield surface. At least one of the nozzles of the tool is equipped with a burst disk such that fluid pressure directed from the surface may be utilized in activating the nozzle. The pressure may be driven to exceed a predetermined level for sake of the activating by way of sealing off access to other nozzle(s) therebelow, for example, by way of standard ball drop techniques. Thus, nozzle selectivity may be taken advantage of when a first nozzle wears out without requiring time consuming removal of the tool from the well for sake of remedial repairs or replacement.

The present invention relates to a packer cuphaving a deformable leading edgewhich moves away from well bore or casing obstructions as the packer cupis moved into a well bore. The anaxisymmetric deformable leading edgecan be formed by an angled leading edgewhich presents only a portion of the leading edgeto a well bore obstruction and allows the edgeto move past the obstruction with little or no longitudinal force. Another embodiment provides an anaxisymmetric deformable leading interior edgewhich is unduloid providing alternatively stiff and deformable sectionsof the edgeto move past the obstructions.

Restriction tolerant packer cup

A flow responsive dump valve mechanism for a straddle packer tool and has a valve controlled flow passage from which underflushed fluid, typically well treatment slurry, in a conveyance and fluid supplying tubing string can be dumped into a well casing. The dump valve mechanism incorporates a ratcheting power piston, an indexing mechanism and high and low load energy storage systems to accomplish open, closed and intermediate dump valve positions. The intermediate position increases the functionality of the tool by preventing accidental closure either due to the free fall of fluid through the coiled tubing or during flushing of the tool and permits the flow rate to be increased for thorough cleaning of the straddle tool and coiled tubing. For energy storage, a light compression spring provides power to cycle the indexing mechanism. Heavier load disc springs (Bellville Washers) are used to provide power for the ratcheting power piston to open the valve.

An improved cup packer for use on wellbore tools is disclosed. The open end of the cup packer bore is filled with an elastomer to prevent the intrusion of sand and debris into the space between the cup packer and the wellbore tool on which it is mounted. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the packer body includes an angularly protruding section at at least one of its ends, wherein the longitudinal dimension of the packer body is at its maximum at its bore. In an additional alternative embodiment of the invention, the open end of the packer is sealed by a screen to prevent the intrusion of sand and debris into the space between the cup packer and the wellbore tool on which it is mounted.

Cup packer

A straddle packer tool for treatment of wells has a tool body supporting sealing elements in spaced relation for defining a sealed annulus zone within a wellbore. The tool body defines a treatment fluid passage having treatment ports that open to the sealed annulus zone for formation fracturing or other well treatment. The tool body has a bypass passage therethrough which is isolated from the treatment fluid passage and communicates with the wellbore above and below the sealed annulus zone. A check valve permits downward flow of well fluid from the bypass passage into the wellbore below the tool and prevents upward flow of fluid into the bypass passage. Bypass ports conduct fluid flow to and from the bypass passage and the wellbore above and below the sealed annulus zone. A packer actuated bypass valve is opened or closed to control the flow of well fluid within the bypass passage.

Straddle packer tool and method for well treating having valving and fluid bypass system

A method of machining a workpiece in a subterranean wellbore comprises the steps of: (a) providing a workpiece that comprises (1) a first section that comprises a first material, and (2) a second section that comprises a second material, the second section forming at least one surface of the workpiece; (b) placing the workpiece in a subterranean wellbore that is surrounded by a geologic formation; and (c) machining the workpiece to remove at least part of the second material in the second section, whereby at least one surface of the workpiece is formed into a desired configuration. This method allows, for example, a landing nipple to be installed in a wellbore, and customized locking recesses to be formed in the inner surface of the nipple at a later time.
