An exercise assembly comprises a frame and elongated foot pedal members that are each movable along user-defined paths of differing dimensions. Each foot pedal member has a front portion and a rear portion. Footpads are disposed on the rear portion of one of the pair of foot pedal members. Elongated coupler arms have a lower portion and an upper portion that is pivotally connected to the frame. Crank members have a first portion that is pivotally connected to the front portion of one of the pair of foot pedal members and have a second portion that is pivotally connected to the lower portion of one of the pair of coupler arms, such that each crank member is rotatable in a circular path. Elongated rocker arms have a lower portion that is pivotally connected to one of the pair of foot pedal members in between the foot pad and the crank member and have an upper portion that is pivotally connected to the frame.

Exercise assemblies having foot pedal members that are movable along user defined paths

In an elliptical step exercise apparatus a dynamic link mechanism can be used to vary the stride length of the machine. A control system can also be used to vary stride length as a function of various exercise and operating parameters such as speed and direction as well as varying stride length as a part of a preprogrammed exercise routine such as a hill or interval training program. In addition the control system can use measurements of stride length to optimize operation of the apparatus.

A rowing exercise machine includes a resistance mechanism having a first coupling between first and second spaced disks and resiliently deformable and tensionable in a spiral therebetween to resist rotation, and a second coupling between one of the disks and a user handle to resist movement of the handle and concordant movement of the user on a seat along a track.

Exercise apparatus for resistance training includes a first disk rotational about an axis, a second disk axially aligned with the first disk and resisting rotation about the axis, and a resiliently deformable coupling coupled between the first and second disks and tensionable in a spiral about the axis upon rotation of the first disk about the axis, such that rotation of the first disk about the axis tensions and stretches the coupling along a spiral and is resisted by the second disk.

A simulated stair climbing-type exercise apparatus is provided having a frame, a resistance member, a transmission, a drive belt, a right pedal assembly, a left pedal assembly and a track mounted to the frame to provide a user with a vertically reciprocating exercise movement. The right pedal assembly, operating independently of the left pedal assembly, oscillates between an upper position at rest and a lower position under the weight of the user. The left pedal assembly, operating independently of the right pedal assembly, oscillates between an upper position at rest and a lower position under the weight of the user. The pedal assemblies remain parallel to a support surface throughout their entire range of motion, as the pedal assemblies travel from their upper position to their lower position on the tracks which can be either linear or curved.

An exercise apparatus includes a frame that is adapted for placement on the floor, a pivot axis supported by the frame, a pedal bar which has first and second ends, a pedal that is secured to the pedal bar, an ellipse generator, and a track. The ellipse generator is secured to both the pivot axis and to the first end of the pedal bar such that the first end of said pedal bar moves in an elliptical path around the pivot axis. The track is secured to the frame and engages the second end of said pedal bar such that the second end moves in a linear reciprocating path as the first end of the pedal bar moves in the elliptical path around said pivot axis. Consequently, the pedal also moves in a generally elliptical path. As the pedal moves in its elliptical path, the angular orientation of the pedal, relative to a fixed, horizontal plane, such as the floor, varies in a manner that simulates a natural heel to toe flexure. The apparatus can also include a resistance member, a data input member, and a control member. The resistance member applies a resistive force to the pedal. The data input means permits the user to input control signals. The control means responds to the input control member to control the resistance member and apply a braking force to the pedal. In addition, the exercise apparatus can include an arm handle and an arm handle coupling assembly that couples the arm handle to the pedal such that the arm handle moves in synchronism with the pedal, and in some cases out of phase.

Cross training exercise apparatus

An exercise apparatus includes a frame that is adapted for placement on the floor, a pivot axis supported by the frame, a pedal bar which has first and second ends, a pedal that is secured to the pedal bar, an ellipse generator, and a track. The ellipse generator is secured to both the pivot axis and to the first end of the pedal bar such that the first end of said pedal bar moves in an elliptical path around the pivot axis. The track is secured to the frame and engages the second end of said pedal bar such that the second end moves in a linear reciprocating path as the first end of the pedal bar moves in the elliptical path around said pivot axis. Consequently, the pedal also moves in a generally elliptical path. As the pedal moves in its elliptical path, the angular orientation of the pedal, relative to a fixed, horizontal plane, such as the floor, varies in a manner that simulates a natural heel to toe flexure. The apparatus can also include a resistance member, a data input member, and a control member. The resistance member applies a resistive force to the pedal.
