The technical field of the invention generally concerns systems for interactive access to stored video data. In particular, a video file server,includes both a random access data storage subsystem,and a archive data storage subsystem,for storing compressed video data. In response to commands from subscriber system,the video file server,transmits compressed video data to the subscriber systems,over lines,A-,H, or receives compressed video data therefrom. An assembly and delivery circuit and method of operation therefor which delivers a stream of pixel formatted digital video data as words to an internal bus of a host personal computer. The host personal computer receives and processes the words assembled and delivered by this circuit to present a video image on its display screen. The assembly and delivery circuit operates in conjunction with the host computer's internal bus at a sufficient speed to permit a host personal computer having a sufficient operating speed to display either black and white images, or color television images at a real-time rate of thirty frames per second.

An apparatus for displaying on a monitor screen of a computer either a color television picture or a black and white television picture at a frame repetition rate sufficient to show smooth motion in the displayed television picture. The apparatus digitizes an analog television signal to assemble an entire frame of digital video words in a video frame memory. After assembling the frame of digital video words, the apparatus communicates that fact to the computer, and then, responsive to a signal from the computer, transfers the entire frame of the digital video words from the video frame memory to the computer over the computer's processing bus.

The invention is an adaptor which permits using a digital telephone device with an incompatible telephone network access. In its most preferred embodiment, the present invention is an adaptor which permits an ISDN telephone device to exchange digital data with two Switched-56 Access. An ISDN Basic Rate Access interface circuit interfaces with the ISDN telephone device, while two Switched-56 Access interface circuit interfaces with two Switched-56 Access. The adaptor also includes a clock recovery circuit for synchronizing digital data transfers occurring between the ISDN Basic Rate Access interface circuit and the ISDN telephone device with the digital data transfers occurring between the Switched-56 Access interface circuit and the Switched-56 Access. In an alternative embodiment, the clock recovery circuit synchronizes digital data transfers between the ISDN Basic Rate Access interface circuit and the Switched-56 Access interface circuits rather than conversely as in the preferred embodiments so a Switched-56 telephone device may exchange digital data with an ISDN Basic Rate Access.

On a single plug-in card of standard dimensions for insertion in a desk model computer are mounted all the necessary components to provide display on a portion of the computer screen as selected and controlled by the computer, a television picture or similar compatible display, and reproduce an associated audio signal. The miniature television adapter functions within the operating cycle of a host computer capable of operating in a multi-program with split or overlay display screen capability. It does not preempt or override any normal computer functions. Its specially designed signal processing and data word assembly and delivery circuitry make possible delivery of a digitally formatted television data stream at a sufficient speed to enable display according to the model of the device of either black and white or color television images at a rate of thirty frames per second when used with a computer of sufficient operating speed. In its color version, the invention processes the color signal to produce many more colors than the standard palette and also may provide a higher resolution color image at a slower rate.
