The airbag module has a base plate, two inflators, a top plate and two airbags. The inflators are mounted into the base plate and the airbags are secured to the base plate via top plates. The first airbag has substantially an &ldquo;L&rdquo; cross section in its deployed state. The second airbag is adjacent to the first airbag and while both bags are deployed, there is substantially no gap between the first and second airbags.

A cold gas inflator having an opening device for rupturing a burst disk. The cold gas inflator is filled with stored gas. The cold gas inflator has a burst disk, which prevents the stored gas from exiting the pressure vessel. In the event of a automobile accident, the opening device is actuated, which causes the ignition of pyrotechnic material. This ignition generates a shockwave of sufficient energy to rupture the burst disk. The stored gas flows into the diffuser and then exits the cold gas inflator in the radial direction. In another embodiment, the stored gas exits the cold gas inflator in the axial direction.

This multi-stage rocket motor assembly includes, a one main motor subassembly and a launch motor subassembly. The flight igniter of the main motor subassembly is integrated with the launch motor subassembly to permit the flight igniter to be jettisoned essentially in unison with the launch motor subassembly.

A hybrid inflator, includes a storage chamber for storing a pressurized gas and a pyrotechnic heater assembly which has a solid gas generating material within a combustion chamber. Forming the outer layer of the pyrotechnic heater assembly is a diffuser, which is inserted into the storage vessel. A closure provides a pressure seal between the storage chamber and the combustion chamber. Upon receiving a control signal, an igniter ignites the solid gas generating material. The closure ruptures, allowing a mixture of hot generated gas and stored gas to discharge through the diffuser and flow into a vehicle occupant restraint.
