A method of reducing dust formation and/or caking in fertilizer or other particulates. The method comprises coating the fertilizer or other particulate in a coating comprising vacuum tower asphalt extender (VTAE). The VTAE may be a non-distilled fraction of vacuum distillation of used automotive and/or industrial oil. The VTAE may not be asphalt or bitumen, although the coating may further comprise bitumen.

Fertilizer coating for dust control and/or anti-caking

A dust control composition for and method of treating fertilizer particles, the composition comprising 10-100% by weight oxidized oil, 0-90% by weight non-oxidized oil, and 0-90% by weight wax. The fertilizer particle is selected from the group consisting of ammonium phosphate, potash, granulated single super phosphate, granular triple super phosphate, NP-fertilizer and NPK-fertilizer. A preferred composition includes a composition of 30-90% by weight oxidized oil, 10-70% by weight non-oxidized oil, and 10-70% by weight wax. The oxidized oil is selected from the group consisting of corn oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower oil, soy oil, linseed oil, castor oil, tall oil, mixtures thereof, and distillation products and distillation residues thereof. The non-oxidized oil is selected from the group consisting of white oil, refined mineral oil, vegetable oil, and mixtures thereof; and the wax is selected from the group consisting of intermediate waxes, paraffin waxes, micro-crystalline waxes, carnauba waxes, vegetable waxes and mixtures thereof.

Dust control composition for fertilizer and method of treatment of fertilizer

An apparatus for measuring a dust content in a sample of granules includes an elongate vertically oriented generally cylindrical hollow tower with a bottom portion, an intermediate portion and a top portion adapted to detachably engage the intermediate portion. The bottom portion further includes collection means for collecting the granules processed through the tower. Air is recirculated through the apparatus using air recirculation means such as a blower/vacuum device. A series of valves and pressure sensing gauges for regulating and controlling the air flow are installed within the recirculation path. The tower intermediate portion further includes a plurality of horizontally oriented grates, each grate being secured in a predetermined space apart relationship. A filter is used between the top portion and the intermediate portion to trap dust blown from the granules as the granules are dropping through the grates. A method of using the apparatus is also presented for calculating the amount of dust in a sample of granules.
