A ratcheting strut comprising: (a) a ratchet box including a through passage; (b) a first tube sized to extend at least partially through the passage, the first tube including teeth that engage corresponding teeth of the ratchet box; (c) a second tube mounted to the ratchet box in parallel with the first tube, the second tube operatively coupled to a second fixation adapter; and, (d) a threaded rod operatively coupled to a nut and a first fixation adapter, the threaded rod repositionably mounted to the first tube, where the nut is operatively coupled and repositionable with respect to the first tube.

A modular knee implant system allows a surgeon to select between several different styles of distal femoral implant components and several different styles of stem extensions while also allowing for use of a metaphyseal component. The metaphyseal component can be a universal one that is usable with all of the styles of distal femoral implant components through use of an adapter. A second adapter allows for use of stem extensions with different types of connectors with the metaphyseal component. A separate metaphyseal component could also be provided with a distal Morse taper post to mate with a distal femoral component having a proximal Morse taper bore. The metaphyseal component may have an outer surface that is configured to maximize contact area with the patient's bone, and may have a surface finish over a substantial part of its overall length that is conducive to bone ingrowth.

Adjustable orthopaedic prosthesis and associated method

A system and method is provided in which natural bone removed during a joint surgery is retained along with the natural attachment of the associated soft tissues. For instance, in a hip surgery, a portion of the greater trochanter is removed while retaining the soft tissue attachments. An implant and the bone portion are provided with mating features, such as a keystone configuration. The keystone configuration can include mating male and female dovetail configurations. The bone portion can be engaged to the mating feature of the implant to support the natural bone and its soft tissue attachment in an anatomically appropriate position.

Soft tissue attachment system and method

A modular long bone prosthesis is provided having a proximal component and a retroversion component. The proximal component is configured at a proximal end to receive a head forming a portion of a joint and is formed at a distal end to mate with additional prosthesis components. The proximal component is formed to simulate an angle inherent in the proximal end of the bone to be replaced and includes an indicator adjacent the distal end to facilitate rotational alignment of the proximal component and additional prosthesis components. The retroversion component includes a proximal end configured to mate with the distal end of the proximal component. The proximal end includes alignment indicia for positioning relative to the indicator on the proximal component. When the indicator is in a first position relative to the alignment indicia the proximal component and the retroversion component establish a first alignment orientation forming an angle simulating the angle inherent in the proximal end of the right long bone of the long bone to be replaced. When the indicator is in a second position relative to the alignment indicia the proximal component and the retroversion component establish a second alignment orientation forming an angle simulating the angle inherent in the proximal end of the left long bone of the long bone to be replaced.

Modular long bone prosthesis for partial or total bone replacement

An acetabular cup and method of securing the acetabular cup to an acetabulum so as to provide a bearing surface for a head portion of a femur is provided. The acetabular cup is shaped to provide a cementless, press-fit into a reamed acetabulum. The acetabular cup is formed of a body having a sidewall defining a radius from a center point of the annular rim to the sidewall wherein the radius increases in length from the apex to said annular rim. The method of securing the acetabular cup first includes reaming the acetabulum with a reamer having a head with a radius of curvature that is less than the radius from the center point to the annular rim of the acetabular cup.

Press fit acetabular cup and associated method for securing the cup to an acetabulum

A surgical reamer assembly for cutting a planar bone surface. The surgical reamer assembly enables the angle or the level of the cutting of the planar reamer to be adjusted. This adjustment is advantageously provided by the use of an adaptor which is positioned between the base support and the planar reamer.
