A welded hollow partition formed from sheet metal and having a concave side and a convex side, includes end caps to close off the partition cavity. The end caps are recessed into the hollow partition to provide wall strengthening within the hollow partition. Epoxy or other water resistant material can be used adjacent to the end cap and within the partition. A gasket can also be fitted adjacent to the end cap and within the partition to provide a water resistant seal. The hollow partition can be filled with temperature resistant material to further seal the partition against moisture.

Hollow nozzle partition with recessed end caps

A low leakage sealing system is provided between a steam pipe and a housing comprised of a pair of shells and a nozzle box movable relative to one another. The sealing system includes large and small diameter sealing rings engaging the pipe and shells or nozzle box and a secondary sealing element disposed between the sealing rings and one of the pipe and shells or nozzle box. The sealing elements comprise frustoconical elements having curved end surfaces forming primary seals with the sealing rings and the housing. In another form, the sealing system includes annular carrier elements having radially opening cavities for receiving sealing rings engageable with the pipe and housing, respectively. The carrier elements are axially spaced from a plurality of sealing rings to provide the low leakage sealing system.

A welded hollow nozzle partition formed from sheet metal and having a concave side and a convex side, includes an interior plate welded to an inner surface of the partition. The interior plate serves to strengthen the outer walls of the partition to withstand wall buckling and ballooning under certain operating conditions.

A turbine shell assembly includes radially inner and outer shell components; axial alignment fits on the inner and outer shell components, each alignment fit comprising a male fit component on one of the inner and outer shell components and a female fit component on the other of the inner and outer shell components, the female fit component comprising a pair of flanges forming a U-shaped channel with opposed faces, and the male fit component comprising a projection received within the U-shaped channel; and a pair of axial alignment keys, each key having a mounting flange for securement along an outer edge of a respective one of the pair of flanges and an alignment flange engaged along a respective one of the opposed faces.

Method and apparatus for axially aligning inner and outer turbine shell components

A packing ring seal assembly for use in a steam turbine for minimizing leakage flow between stationary and rotating steam path parts includes a stationary annular seal ring having a plurality of axially spaced, annular sealing teeth extending in a radial inward direction and adapted to cooperate with sealing surfaces on a rotating component of the steam turbine, wherein radial clearance between the sealing teeth and the sealing surfaces varies by predetermined amounts.
