Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture for non-TCP push service in a mobile network comprise receiving, at a push server, registration information for a mobile device from a push client via a first internal interface without persistent TCP connection. The registration information includes a private IP address for the mobile device and a mobile device session identifier associated with an instance of an application client on the mobile device. A push trigger associated with an event of an application server is received at the push server via a second interface exposed outside of a service provider firewall. The push trigger includes a push trigger session identifier. When the push trigger session identifier matches the mobile device session identifier, the push trigger is determined to be associated with the instance of the application client on the mobile device and is transmitted to the push client without persistent TCP connection.

Novel 'loss rate' metrics are presented that can be used to indicate the quality of a video stream. These metrics may be determined using a simplified method or by a more sophisticated method, the latter method applying different 'weights' (i.e., adjustments) to error computations based on the type of frame involved (i.e., I, P, B). Both methods may produce a video quality score within a given range (e.g., in the range of 0 to 1) where one end of the range indicates a video stream of high quality (i.e., no frames are affected), and the other end indicates a video stream of low quality (i.e., all frames are affected).

Channels are allocated to one or more cells within a wireless LAN (WLAN) without causing unacceptable interference. The allocation involves dividing an allocation time period into frames, each frame having a substantially short duration, and then allocating one or more channels to one or more WLAN cells during each such frame according to an allocation vector. The vector assures that each cell allocated a channel is sufficiently distant from every other cell allocated the same channel to minimize cross interference. Only those cells allocated a channel are allowed to transmit during a given frame. The allocation vectors are determined in such a way that the performance of a WLAN is optimized.
