A method for operating a centralized controller in a communications network with a plurality of transmission points includes generating a plurality of overlays for the communications network in accordance with first mutual intercell interference levels for transmission point pairs in the communications network, wherein each overlay of the plurality of overlays comprises virtual transmission points, and selecting a first overlay of the plurality of overlays in accordance with a merit measure derived from first user equipments (UEs) operating in the communications network tentatively scheduled to each overlay of the plurality of overlays. The method also includes scheduling a first subset of the first UEs operating in the communications network during a first resource unit in accordance with the selected first overlay.

System and method for grouping and selecting transmission points

A method for reducing interference at a first user equipment (UE) includes receiving, by a second communications controller, a request to reduce interference at the first UE, the first UE being served by a first communications controller. The method also includes determining, by the second communications controller, a beam adjustment in accordance with uplink transmission measurements of the first UE and a second UE, the beam adjustment to aim a transmission to the second UE away from the second UE and towards an angle orthogonal to a first direction of the first UE relative to the second communications controller, the second UE being served by the second communications controller. The method further includes pre-adjusting, by the second communications controller, the transmission with the beam adjustment, and transmitting, by the second communications controller, the pre-adjusted transmission to the second UE.

A method for configuring a first base station within a cluster in a communications system having a plurality of cluster includes optimizing an operating parameter of the first base station in accordance with first utility function results from a first utility function associated with the first base station and second utility function results from a second utility function associated with a second base station within the cluster, the first utility function results and the second utility function results according to multiple settings for the operating parameter of the first base station, a first initialized setting of the operating parameter for the second base station, and a second initialized setting of the operating parameter for an external base station outside the cluster. The method also includes sharing the optimized operating parameter with the external base station.

System and method for selecting operating parameters in a communications system

A method of controlling a polar optical transmitter comprising a dual-branch Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator driven by a pair of independent electrical drive signals. A cost function is provided which defines a relationship between a control parameter of the optical transmitter and a power level of an output optical signal generated by the MZ modulator. A selected component of the electrical drive signals is dithered using a predetermined dither signal. A modulation depth of the output optical signal power level corresponding to the dither signal is detected, and the control parameter adjusted based on the cost function and the detection result.

Control system for a polar optical transmitter

In a coherent optical receiver, a method of at least partially compensating Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) of an optical signal received through an optical communications system. A respective multi-bit sample stream of each one of a pair of orthogonal received polarizations of the optical signal is tapped, and used to derive a respective metric value indicative of a quality of each multi-bit sample stream. A gain of an analog front end of the coherent optical receiver is adjusted based on the derived metric values.

Automatic gain control in a coherent optical receiver

An apparatus for generating variable DGD is particularly for use in a PMD compensator. The apparatus has first, second and third birefringent elements arranged in order between the input and output of the compensator and having first, second and third differential group delays (DGDs) in the ratio 1:2:1. The orientation of the PSPs of the signal in each element relatively to the principal axes of the element is controlled, such that a change in orientation between the first and second elements is equal and opposite to a change in orientation between the second and third elements. This arrangement provides symmetrical relative rotations of the signal PSPs and principal axes about the central birefringent element. In combination with the 1:2:1 ratio, it can be shown that compensation of any first order PMD can be achieved without the compensator introducing additional second order PMD. The required level of first order PMD compensation is selected by controlling the amount of the orientation changes.
