Continuous manufacturing of superabsorbent/ion exchange sheet material

A continuous sheet having a combination of acidic and basic water-absorbing resin particles that are essentially not neutralized and can be continuously manufactured on conventional papermaking apparatus, using a wet, dry, or wet-dry process to manufacture a water-absorbent sheet-like substrate containing 50%-100% by weight of the combination of acidic and basic water-absorbent particles. The acidic and basic essentially unneutralized resins can be contained in the sheet material articles of the present invention as separate acidic and basic resin particles, or as multicomponent particles containing both the acidic and basic resins. The sheet materials can be manufactured having new and unexpected structural integrity, with little or no shakeout or loss of superabsorbent particles during or after manufacture while exhibiting exceptional water absorption and retention properties.

Continuous manufacture of superabsorbent/ion exchange sheet material

Multicomponent superabsorbent gel particles are disclosed. The multicomponent particles comprise at least one acidic water-absorbing resin and at least one basic water-absorbing resin. Each particle contains at least one microdomain of the acidic resin in contact with, or in close proximity to, at least one microdomain of the basic resin. Blends of multicomponent superabsorbent gel particles with particles of a second water-absorbing resin also are disclosed. Improved diaper cores containing particles of the multicomponent super-absorbent gel particles also are disclosed.

Multicomponent superabsorbent gel particles are disclosed. The multicomponent particles comprise at least one acidic water-absorbing resin and at least one basic water-absorbing resin. Diapers having improved acquisition rates

Poly(vinylamine)-based superabsorbent gels are disclosed. The superabsorbent gels either comprise a mixture of a poly(vinylamine) polymer and an acidic water-absorbing polymer, like polyacrylic acid, or comprise a salt of a poly(vinylamine) polymer. An improved method of preparing poly(vinylamine), and improved diaper cores, also are disclosed.

Poly (vinylamine)-based superabsorbent gels and method of manufacturing the same

A method of preparing a solid water absorbing resin including mixing a monomer solution of (A) acrylic acid neutralized 70-100 mole percent; and (B) a water-miscible to water-soluble polyvinyl monomer in a combined concentration of at least 30 wt. %; with water to form a mixed monomer solution, and adding a thermal initiator and a redox initiator to the mixed monomer solution to form an initiated mixed monomer solution, and wherein the mixed monomer solution is at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the thermal initiator when the thermal initiator is added to the mixed monomer solution and wherein the temperature of the mixed monomer solution is high enough such that addition of the redox initiator thereto causes sufficient polymerization of the monomers to raise the temperature of the initiated mixed monomer solution to a level sufficient that the thermal initiator decomposes sufficiently to provide, together with the redox initiator, substantially complete polymerization.

Process for preparing water-absorbing resins

Improved water-absorbing, crosslinked acrylate resins are prepared by aqueous polymerization of (A) acrylic acid neutralized 70 to 100 mole percent for example with ammonia and/or caustic alkali and/or an amine; with (B) acrylamide in a mole ratio of 70 to 100 mole percent (A) to 30:0 mole percent (B); (C) styrene, in an amount of 0% to 25% based on the weight of acrylic acid or acrylate; and (D) a water miscible or a water soluble polyvinyl monomer in the presence of (E) a metal oxide, such as titanium dioxide, in an amount of 0.001% to 5% based on the total weight of (A), (B), (C), (D) and (E), such that the amount of (D) is 0.001 to 0.6 weight percent based on the total weight of (A), (B), (C), (D) and (E). In addition, surface treating the water-absorbing crosslinked acrylate resins with a polyquaternary amine substantially further increases both the rate of water absorption and the quantity of water absorbed and retained by the metal oxide-containing resin. The untreated and the surface-treated resins also maintain the necessary 'dry feel' required for most applications.

In addition, surface treating the water-absorbing crosslinked acrylate resins with a polyquaternary amine substantially further increases both the rate of water absorption and the quantity of water absorbed and retained by the resin. Water absorbing, cross-linked acrylate resin copolymers are prepared by aqueous polymerization of (A) acrylic acid neutralized 70 to 100 mole percent for example with ammonia, and/or caustic alkali and/or an amine; with (B) styrene and/or methyl methacrylate in an amount of 1% to 25% based on the weight of acrylic acid or acrylate, and (C) acrylamide in a mole ratio of 70 to 100 mole percent (A) to 30:0 mole percent (C); and (D) a water miscible or a water soluble polyvinyl monomer in an amount of 0.001 to 0.3 weight percent based on the total weight of (A), (B), (C) and (D).
