A method of cleaning a component within a turbine that includes disassembling the turbine engine to provide a flow path to an interior passageway of the component from an access point. The component has coked hydrocarbons formed thereon. The method further includes discharging a flow of cleaning solution towards the interior passageway from the access point, wherein the cleaning solution is configured to remove the coked hydrocarbons from the component.

Methods of cleaning a component within a turbine engine

A gas turbine engine includes a liner positioned within a compressor section or a turbine section of the gas turbine engine and at least partially defining a core air flowpath through the gas turbine engine. The gas turbine engine also includes a casing at least partially enclosing the liner. Additionally, the gas turbine engine includes a pressure sensor assembly having a body, an extension member, and a pressure sensor. The pressure sensor is positioned at least partially within the body and the body is positioned at least partially on an outer side of the casing, the extension member extending from the body through a casing opening in the casing and towards a liner opening in the liner. The extension member defines a continuous sense cavity exposing the pressure sensor to the core air flowpath.

A coated article has a metallic substrate with a substrate composition, and a metallic coating overlying and contacting the metallic substrate. The metallic coating has a metallic-coating composition different from the substrate composition. A protective coating overlies and contacts the metallic coating. The protective coating includes an aluminide layer overlying and contacting the metallic coating, and optionally a thermal barrier coating overlying and contacting the aluminide layer. This structure may be used to restore a key dimension of an article that has previously been in service and to protect the article as well.

Apparatus for electroplating a workpiece includes an unassembled electroplating anode assembly having weldable first and second structural anode members. The first structural anode member includes a positioning slot. The second structural anode member includes a positioning tab disposable in the positioning slot. A method for making an electroplating anode assembly includes obtaining an electroplating-anode-assembly first structural anode member having a positioning slot and obtaining an electroplating-anode-assembly second structural anode member having a positioning tab. The method also includes locating the positioning tab in the positioning slot and welding together the first and second structural anode members.

A method for selectively removing an aluminide coating from at least one surface of a metal-based substrate by: (a) contacting the surface of the substrate with at least one stripping composition comprising nitric acid at a temperature less than about 20&#xb0; C. to degrade the coating without damaging the substrate; and (b) removing the degraded coating without damaging the substrate. Also disclosed is a method for replacing a worn or damaged aluminide coating on at least one surface of a metal-based substrate by selectively removing the coating using the above steps, and then applying a new aluminide coating to the surface of the substrate. Turbine engine parts, such as high-pressure turbine blades, treated using the above methods are also disclosed.

A process for removing aluminosilicate-based material (e.g., 'CMAS') from a substrate is described. The material is treated with an aqueous composition containing at least one acid having the formula HAF, in which A is Si, Ge, Ti, Zr, Al, and Ga; and x is 1-6. Treatment of the substrate is often carried out by immersion in an aqueous bath. The process is also very effective for removing CMAS-type material from cavities in the substrate, e.g., cooling holes in a gas turbine component. Related compositions are also described.

A coated article is prepared by furnishing an article substrate having a free sulfur content of less than about 1 part per million. The low-sulfur article may be made of a material selected to have a low sulfur content, provided with a scavenging element that reacts with free sulfur to produce a sulfur compound, or desulfurized by contact with a reducing gas such as hydrogen. A platinum-group metal layer is deposited over the article substrate, and a ceramic coating is applied over the platinum-group metal layer.

An electrochemical stripping method for selectively removing at least one coating from the surface of a substrate is described. The substrate is immersed in an aqueous composition through which electrical current flows. The composition includes an acid having the formula H AF , in which &ldquo;A&rdquo; is Si, Ge, Ti, Zr, Al, or Ga; and x is 1-6. Various coatings can be removed, such as diffusion or overlay coatings. The method can be used to fully-strip a coating (e.g., from a turbine component), or to partially strip one sublayer of the coating. Related processes and an apparatus are also described.

Method and apparatus for selectively removing coatings from substrates

A grit blasting and alkaline etch surface pretreatment that is applied to a metallic airfoil. The metallic airfoil includes pockets or cavities that have been fabricated into the airfoil to reduce the weight of the airfoil. The pretreatment includes grit blasting the surface of the pockets or cavities, followed by washing the airfoil and treating the airfoil in an alkaline etch bath. After any remaining solution from the bath is neutralized and within twenty-four hours of the end of the pretreatment, primer is applied to the surface of the pockets or cavities. After the primer is applied to the surface of the pockets, a lightweight resin is injected into the pockets and bonds to the primer forming a mechanical bond with good fracture toughness at elevated temperatures.

A method for removing an aluminide coating from a substrate includes the steps of contacting the surface of the substrate with at least one stripping composition to degrade the coating. The stripping composition includes an aliphatic or aromatic sulfonic acid, and at least one additive. The coating is then removed.

Method for removing an aluminide coating from a substrate

A method for recovering Pt from Pt-bearing coating on a gas turbine engine component. The component is contacted with a chemical stripping agent to dissolve away constituents of the coating and produce a Pt-bearing film of acid oxidation products at the surface of the component. The film is removed from the component to produce a Pt-rich residue containing at least about 10% Pt. The Pt-rich residue is collected and refined to recover Pt therefrom.

Method for recovering platinum from platinum-containing coatings on gas turbine engine components

A method of removing hot corrosion products from the surface of a component exposed to corrosive conditions at elevated temperatures, as is the case with turbine, combustor or augmentor components of gas turbine engines. The method is particularly suited for the removal of hot corrosion products from components protected with a diffusion aluminide coating, either as an environmental coating or as a bond coat for a thermal barrier coating (TBC). The processing steps of the method include immersing the component in a heated liquid solution containing acetic acid, and then agitating the surfaces of the component while the component remains immersed in the solution. In this manner, hot corrosion products on the surfaces of the component are removed without damaging or removing the diffusion aluminide coating. As a result, regions of the component from which the hot corrosion products were removed can then be repaired by a suitable aluminizing process.

A method and apparatus for forming a multilayer thermal barrier coating such that the coating is composed of substantially homogeneous layers of different ceramic materials. The method entails supporting an article within a coating apparatus and in proximity to ceramic ingots of the different ceramic materials, and then simultaneously directing electron beams at both ingots so as to maintain a portion of each ingot in a molten state. According to a particular aspect of this invention, vapors of both ceramic materials coexist within the coating apparatus, yet each ceramic material is sequentially deposited onto the article by sequentially interrupting exposure of surfaces of the article to the vapors, such that the vapors form homogeneous successive layers on the surface. Exposure of the article to one or more of the vapors can be interrupted with a baffle, such that the vapor of only one of the ceramic ingots is directly deposited on a given surface of the article at any instant. The baffle can be employed in conjunction with the article being rotated at a constant or variable speed, and/or being translated above the members within the vessel to alter the relative thicknesses of the ceramic and an intermediate layer that is formed between adjacent layers and is composed of a mixture of the ceramic materials.
