Methods for reducing a concentration of hexavalent chromium within a first aluminum slurry by adding a reducing agent to form a second aluminum slurry are provided. The reducing agent causes a chemical reduction reaction with the hexavalent chromium compound of the first aluminum slurry to form a trivalent chromium compound within the second aluminum slurry such that a first weight ratio of hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium in the first aluminum slurry is decreased to a second weight ratio of hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium in the second aluminum slurry, with the second weight ratio being less than the first weight ratio.

Aluminum slurry coatings and methods of their formation and use

A fan system of a turbine includes a fan mid shaft made of a coated steel material configured to extend along a center axis of a turbine. The fan mid shaft having an inner diameter surface. The fan system includes a dry film lubricant that is configured to be applied to at least a portion of the inner diameter surface of the fan mid shaft.

A steel article is fabricated by providing an iron-base alloy having less than about 0.5 weight percent aluminum, melting the alloy to form a melt, adding calcium to the melt, thereafter adding aluminum to the melt to increase the aluminum content of the melt to more than about 0.5 weight percent aluminum, and casting the melt to form a casting. Other calcium additions may be made simultaneously with the adding of aluminum, and after the adding of aluminum but before casting the melt. The calcium additions deoxidize the melt to minimize the formation of clustered aluminum-oxygen-based inclusions.

Fabrication of a high-strength steel article with inclusion control during melting

A roller bearing that provides ball and roller bearing elements comprised of M50 steel and M50NiL steel having surface hardnesses above 60 HRC, and in the range of 65-72 HRC. The hardness in the surface region is achieved by nitriding the surface to achieve a high hardness and extended life. This improvement is brought about by controlling the microstructure of the alloy by minimizing the formation of retained austenite. The material is tempered as required. The surface is then nitrided, but the nitriding operation is carefully controlled to avoid the formation of intergranular nitrides. Because of the method used to prevent the formation of intergranular nitrides, some carbon may be present to prevent the surface of the steel from becoming depleted of carbon. The hardening element in this nitro-carburizing operation is nitrogen, which forms iron nitride as FeN or FeN intragranularly. The purpose of the carbon in the operation is to maintain the concentration of carbon in the surface of the bearing so that the properties are not altered by decarburizing the surface. Standard gaseous and plasma nitriding techniques also may be used for the nitriding operation.

Spall propagation properties of case-hardened M50 and M50NiL bearings

A bearing includes a bearing component, such as a bearing race, having a bearing contact surface. A region at the bearing contact surface is made of titanium aluminide, preferably an alpha-2 or gamma titanium aluminide. A case-hardened layer present at the surface of the titanium aluminide region increases the hardness and wear resistance of the titanium aluminide at elevated temperature. The case-hardened layer is preferably formed by diffusing carbon into the surface of the titanium aluminide from a gaseous medium, at elevated temperature land at ambient or reduced pressure.

A duplex strengthened structural steel that is particularly suitable for demanding applications which require both high yield strength and fatigue properties is provided. The preferred steel alloys of this invention are characterized by both the presence of intermetallic strengthening precipitates like maraging steels, as well as alloy carbide strengtheners as is common with secondary hardening steels. Titanium is substantially absent from the preferred steel alloys of this invention. Thus the formation of nonmetallic inclusions, such as titanium carbonitrides, are alleviated which correspondingly enhances the fatigue properties of the preferred alloys. To compensate for the lack of titanium strengthening precipitates within the alloy, additions of aluminum are provided such that the aluminum forms intermetallic strengthening precipitates with nickel.

High strength, high fatigue structural steel

A method of case hardening ferrometallic parts that avoids the use of protective coatings or shields is provided. The process comprises the steps of a) carburizing the entire part, b) machining the carburized part to form first and second surface regions wherein the second surface region has a carbon content at least 100% greater than the carbon content of the first surface region, c) heating the machined part at a hardening temperature with the entire part in contact with a gaseous atmosphere containing a source of carbon and a carbon content of from 85% to 115% of the carbon content of said first surface region, and d) quenching the part.
