The present Inter-System Message Delivery System increases the SMS text message delivery success rate. When a mobile subscriber station roams outside of the confines of the cell in which it is presently registered, the delivery of SMS messages to mobile subscriber stations fails, since the mobile subscriber station is not present in the Serving Mobile Switching Center to receive the SMS message. This is particularly common when the mobile subscriber station is moving within the confines of a border cell or multiple cells of a Border Mobile Switching Center and is not yet registered at this Border Mobile Switching Center. The SMS message delivery process initiates a page to the mobile subscriber station via inter-system or inter-Mobile Switching Center paging. Once the mobile subscriber station is located, the bearer data for this mobile subscriber station is forwarded from the Serving Mobile Switching Center to the Border Mobile Switching Center in which the mobile subscriber station is presently located The mobile subscriber station is finally registered at the Border MSC.

Inter-system message delivery for SMS text messages

The present system for identifying the location of selected mobile stations includes two components: a first component that authenticates an authorized party who logs into the Mobile Switching Center, and a second component that is responsive to the entry of a system activation command by the authorized party for locating selected mobile stations and providing mobile station location information to the authorized party. The present system for identifying the location of selected mobile stations enables a service provider to track a mobile station through the use of Autonomous Registrations or the polling of a selected mobile station or a set of mobile stations. Once communication with the selected mobile station is established, the GPS coordinates of the selected mobile station are retrieved and provided to an authorized party to enable them to locate the subscriber and their mobile station.

System for identifying the location of selected mobile stations

In order to reduce the traffic on the paging channel, the system for reducing paging channel occupancy for message waiting indication in mobile switching centers allows the Message Waiting Notification process to determine a last zone in which the Mobile Subscriber was located and only transmit the Message Waiting Indication to the cells within that zone. This eliminates message transmission on the paging channel of cells which are not likely to have the Mobile Subscriber Station residing in their service area. Multiple retries can be attempted and if the last retry is being activated, the paging can be extended to cover all zones in the Mobile Switching Center. The sharing of information about when a mobile has responded to a message waiting count between the Serving MSC and the Home MSC also reduces the paging channel occupancy. The method of not sending a message waiting notification when a mobile has already acknowledged the message count greatly reduces the impact of Message Waiting Notification on the paging channel occupancy. In particular, border cell areas where the Mobile Subscriber Station can bounce between MSCs is where the biggest benefit can be derived.

System for reducing paging channel occupancy for message waiting indication in mobile switching centers

The message waiting notification update system is operable in the serving Mobile Switching Center and, upon receipt of a message-waiting acknowledgement from the mobile subscriber station, updates the local copy of the subscriber's data in the Visited Location Register and forwards this information to the subscriber's Home Location Register. The Home Location Register stores this received data for use when the next successive Registration Notification is received from a new serving Mobile Switching Center or in response to the subscriber initiating a local access. When the serving Mobile Switching Center receives a Registration Notification message return result from the subscriber's Home Location Register and the message waiting notification count is the same as the count previously sent to the Home Location Register, the serving Mobile Switching Center does not have to transmit a message waiting notification over the forward control channel to the mobile subscriber station.

Systems for providing message waiting notification updates in a cellular communication network

When a subscriber record is moved from a first HLR to a second HLR that utilizes a different protocol, the wireless communication system sends two queries for location information for the mobile station, one to the first HLR and one to the second HLR, simultaneously. Two responses are received, one from each of the HLRs. The valid response is recorded in a separate table for future use. The invalid response is discarded. The next time a call comes in for the mobile station, the table is traversed to determine if the HLR has been updated for the mobile station. If so, the location request is sent only to the system in the table. If the table does not include information for the called mobile station, simultaneous queries are sent to the first and second HLRs.

Method for optimizing home location register queries in a wireless communication system

There is therefore a need to forward the message waiting indication data to Mobile Switching Centers whose service areas overlap with the service area of the Mobile Switching Center presently serving this mobile subscriber's wireless communication device. In this manner, any one of these Mobile Switching Centers can update the mobile subscriber with regard to message waiting indications. This is accomplished by the use of the ISPAGE message which is used to forward the message waiting indication data to Mobile Switching Centers whose service areas overlap with the service area of the Mobile Switching Center presently serving this mobile subscriber's wireless communication device.

Message waiting indication operable to overcome a border condition between mobile switching centers

An apparatus, method and system are disclosed for providing a default mode for authentication failures in a mobile telecommunication network. The system includes an authentication center (typically co-located within a home location register), an adjunct network entity, and an originating mobile switching center. The home location register generally stores information pertaining to a mobile unit, such as a cellular or PCS mobile telephone. The adjunct network entity contains one or more application nodes, such as an announcement application node for providing an announcement on a call leg to the mobile unit. When the network has been accessed by a mobile unit through a call leg, the originating mobile switching center is configured to perform an authentication procedure. The originating mobile switching center further is configured, when the authentication procedure has resulted in an authentication failure, to receive a message from the authentication center to deny the mobile unit access to the network, to terminate a communication session with the mobile unit, and to route the call leg to the announcement application node for the provision of an announcement on the call leg to the mobile unit. Following such an announcement, the originating switching center is also configured to route the call leg to a customer service center, for example, to reprogram the mobile unit.

Apparatus, method and system for providing a default mode for authentication failures in mobile telecommunication networks

An apparatus, method and system are provided for message-based intelligent tandeming of an incoming call to an application node in telecommunication systems. The various embodiments utilize a new parameter, referred to as a tandem parameter, to designate whether incoming calls to a particular subscriber are to be tandemed to an application node or are to be delivered directly to the subscriber. The preferred system embodiment includes an adjunct network entity, a database, and a switching center. The adjunct network entity, such as a service circuit node or service control point, has one or more application nodes or platforms, supporting various telecommunication services such as prepaid services, calling party pays services, and one number services. The database, such as a home location register or visitor location register, stores information such as subscriber profiles, and includes storing the tandem parameter. The switching center, such as a mobile switching center, is configured to receive an incoming call leg directed to a called party directory number, to transmit a first message to the database to determine call treatment instructions, and to receive from the database a second message containing a tandem parameter. When the tandem parameter does not indicate tandeming, the incoming call leg is routed to the called party directory number, and when the tandem parameter does indicate tandeming, the switching center obtains a routing parameter and performs digit analysis of the called party directory number. The switching center, when the digit analysis has been performed successfully, tandems the incoming call leg to the application node, and when the digit analysis has not been performed successfully, provides an individually configured default mode for the incoming call leg.

Apparatus, method and system for message-based intelligent tandeming of incoming calls to application nodes in telecommunication systems

An apparatus, method and system are provided for intelligent tandeming of an incoming call to an application node in telecommunication systems. The various embodiments utilize a new parameter, referred to as a tandem parameter, to designate whether incoming calls to a particular subscriber are to be tandemed to an application node or are to be delivered directly to the subscriber. When the digit analysis has been performed successfully, the switching center tandems the incoming call leg to the application node, and when the digit analysis has not been performed successfully, provides a default mode for the incoming call leg. In the preferred embodiment, the default mode includes routing the incoming call leg to the called party directory number or providing an announcement to the calling party.

Apparatus, method and system for intelligent tandeming of incoming calls to application nodes in telecommunication systems

Methods for locating a missing called mobile unit in a telecommunications network are disclosed. With various equipment manufacturers present in the telecommunications industry, methods for use with a variety of equipment made by those manufacturers are necessary. The equipment in the network would include mobile units, home location registers and mobile switching centers. Through alterations in the operation of the home location registers and/or the mobile switching centers, the responses to page requests and/or routing requests are varied from the typical responses. Through those variations, missing called mobile units may be located in an efficient manner, regardless of the equipment provider.

Method for flood paging in a telecommunications network

An apparatus includes a home location register ( ) that stores records for mobile units in a home system ( ). A visited location register ( ) stores records for mobile units presently registered in a visited system ( ) in which the visited location register ( ) is located. Method and apparatus for identifying access technologies

The Mobile Subscriber Station paging system makes use of a Standalone Home Location Register SHLR, where the mobile subscriber station records are removed from the present Mobile Switching Center and placed on a processor that manages only the subscriber's records and does not process call service requests. The ANSI-41 standard is then adapted to add a new parameter (CALLTIMEFEATURE) which includes the information required to apply Short MIN paging to a mobile subscriber station when certain conditions are met. These conditions are: the mobile subscriber station is capable of responding to a Short MIN page (the last 24 bits that represent the last 7 digits of the mobile subscriber station number), and the System ID that is immutably entered into the mobile subscriber station is the same as the System ID that is being broadcast by the cell on the overhead message train. When these conditions are met, the paging message can be reduced in length by using a sub-address paging scheme to thereby diminish the control channel overhead.

System for efficient mobile subscriber station paging in cellular mobile telecommunication networks

A mobile switching center (MSC) in accordance with the principles of the present invention provides access to a subscribers voice message center from the subscriber's roaming mobile station. The MSC is responsive to a &ldquo;RemoteFeatureRequest&rdquo; Invocation by the roaming mobile station in which the subscriber's directory number is the same as the dialed digits by routing the call from the mobile station to the subscriber's voice message center. The MSC may also be responsive to a &ldquo;OriginationRequest&rdquo; employing the subscriber's directory number as the dialed digits by routing the roaming mobile station's call to the subscriber's voice message center. If the MSC supports both RemoteFeatureRequest-, and OriginationRequest-based access to the subscriber's voice message center, the MSC determines which of the approaches to use in response to the reception of a subscriber's directory number as the dialed digits from the subscriber's roaming mobile station. The MSC may make this determination on the basis of information stored in a local database that indicates the method employed by other telecommunications devices, such as other MSCs, Visiting Location Registers (VLR), or Home Location Registers (HLR), within the system. One of the methods, that is, the use of an Origination Invocation or the use of a RemoteFeatureRequest invocation, may be chosen as a default method.

Alternative message usage for voice mail retreival via revertive calling

The present invention provides a method for limiting the number of simultaneous call forwarding attempts for a mobile unit. A call is made for a mobile unit. The call request is sent to the MSC associated with the mobile unit. When the mobile unit is not currently active at the MSC, the MSC sends a location request to an SCP. The SCP responds with a return message that includes a temporary location directory number (TLDN) and an indicator. The MSC checks the current number of simultaneous call forwarding attempts being made for the mobile unit. If the current number of simultaneous call forwarding attempts exceeds a threshold, the MSC does not forward the call. If the number of simultaneous attempts does not exceed a threshold, the MSC forwards the call to the mobile unit by sending it to the TLDN.

Method for limiting the number of simultaneous call forwarding attempts in a cellular communication system

An apparatus, method and system are provided for automatic telecommunication conferencing and broadcasting. The system embodiment includes a switch for reception of a first incoming call leg designating a multiple leg service, such as a telecommunication conference, and also designating a subscriber group. Each particular subscriber group is predefined, and consists of a list of directory numbers to be included within the conference or broadcast session. The system embodiment also includes a conference bridge coupled to the switch, in which the conference bridge includes instructions to receive the first incoming call leg routed from the switch, to determine the plurality of directory numbers associated with the subscriber group, and to return to the switch a plurality of intermediate incoming call legs corresponding to the plurality of directory numbers for routing by the switch to form a plurality of outgoing call legs. The conference bridge also includes further instructions to monitor answering of the plurality of outgoing call legs, and to connect an outgoing call leg indicating joinder, of the plurality of outgoing call legs, to the conference bridge for a multiple leg telecommunication session, such as a conference or broadcast session.
