A method and system for using XML for both a protocol layer and application data are described. The method comprises the steps of initiating a connection by a client to a server to form a session, responding by said server to said client indicating that said connection has been successfully completed, submitting a request by said client to said server for service, responding by said server to said client by providing said service and terminating the connection by said client. A session is maintained and a plurality of requests for service by a client and a server responds to those requests by providing the requested service or an error message. The session is maintained until all requests made by a client have been serviced and the requests made by a client may be either synchronous or asynchronous. The system comprises a client and a server coupled to said client by a communication link.

Method and apparatus for using XML for both a protocol layer and application layer

A messaging system in which a core messaging infrastructure stores and manages messaging attributes, but applications external to the core infrastructure define and modify most attributes. Attribute types may be easily defined or modified, the manner in which attribute values are obtained may be easily defined or modified, and the entity types to which attributes are assigned may be easily defined or modified. The messaging system includes a plurality of messaging entities, such as messages, folders, and users, a plurality of attributes associated with the messaging entities, and a plurality of applications. Each application is operable to examine and modify at least some of the messaging entities and attributes. An application selection device is operable to examine at least some of the messaging entities and at least some of the attributes and to select an application to be invoked, from among the plurality of applications, based on values of the examined messaging entities and attributes. An application invocation device invokes the selected application. The applications may define and modify a type of an attribute and/or may define and modify an association of an attribute with a messaging entity.

Messaging system with application-defined states

A messaging system, and method of operation thereof, which supports combinations of directory and mailing list addressing mechanisms. Intended message recipients are specified as declarative addresses, which may include combinations of directory and mailing list information. The messaging system includes a messaging server and an address resolution module. The messaging server receives a message from a sender system and transmits the message to the recipient system. The address resolution module, which is coupled to the messaging server, receives a declarative address associated with the message, resolves the declarative address into at least one messaging address and transmits the at least one messaging address to the messaging server. In one embodiment, a database system may be coupled to the address resolution module to allow address resolution based on information stored in a database. The address resolution module generates a database query based on the declarative address and transmits the generated query to a database system. The database system receives a database query, retrieves at least one messaging address specified by the query and transmits the retrieved at least one messaging address to the address resolution module.

Declarative message addressing

Jargons are a family of application oriented languages well-suited for representing and processing complex, hierarchically structured information. A system is presented that automates most of the work of making a jargon, so practically any programmer can make a simple one in a few days. Every jargon has the same syntax, is processed with same ready-made base interpreter, and comes complete with a suite of &ldquo;deluxe&rdquo; features: debugger, error handler, function definition, associative arrays, variables, incremental loader, among others. The system provides a general purpose programming language for writing actions that defines the semantics of a jargon and an interpreter written in the general purpose language and customized for the jargon, by integrating the jargon's actions into the interpreter. Using jargons, the same information document may be reprocessed to generate a multiplicity of products.

Method to produce application oriented languages

An information stream management network server is disclosed that enables distributing articles to a destination in the network at times and in forms that are specified by a user, while also enabling accessing and receiving the articles from sources in the network at times and in forms that are independent of the user. The network server handles both information pull articles and information push articles. The information push articles use declarative addressing to specified groups of users, thereby masking recipient endpoint identities and delivery preferences from sources and enabling broadcast communication to members of such a group.

The present invention is a messaging system, and method of operation thereof, which provides message recipients with control over the delivery of message and charges the cost of a message to the sender of the message. A message is received at a messaging server from a sender system, the message including an indication of a recipient system. A notification message is transmitted to the recipient system, allowing the message recipient to determine whether they desire the message to be delivered. If so, an activation message is received from the recipient system and the message is transmitted to the recipient system. A charge for the message is assessed to the sender of the message. The message is stored in the messaging server until the activation message is received. At least a portion of the assessed charge may be credited or debited to the recipient of the message. The message may include any type of electronic information, such as text, graphics, video and audio information, and may be encrypted or unencrypted.

Sender-paid electronic messaging

A message storage system, for use with a communication network and in which a network presence is provided for an entity, stores a message from a sender to a network presence. The message storage system accepts a query including a specified property, and generates a mailbox including the stored message when one of the message properties is the specified property. A software agent processes the stored message in accordance with a processing preference included in attributes associated with the entity. The message storage system generates a summary of the message and updates the summary of the message in response to modifications to the message.

A communication network system provides a network presence for an entity, the network presence being identified by handle information relating to the entity, the handle information being unrelated to a physical endpoint. Attributes of the entity are associated with the handle information. The handle is a source of vendor services to the entity, and may be a source of services from the entity to others.

A directory system, for use with a communication network and in which a network presence is provided for an entity having attributes, stores the attributes and responds to queries. The attributes may have associated authenticity information. The attributes may have a hierarchical relationship, and the queries include information dependent on this hierarchical relationship. When the query includes attributes, the directory system provides identifying information for the entity and automatically transfers the identifying information to a vendor service. When the attributes have associated security information, the directory service responds to queries with only attribute information associated with a public security indication.

Universal directory service

A message delivery system, for use with a communication network and in which a network presence is provided for an entity having attributes, delivers a message from a sender to the network presence. In some cases, information identifying the sender is omitted from the message. The delivery system can append non-repudiable sender information to the message. The sender can provide selected attributes as an address, and the delivery system replaces the selected attributes with an address of the network presence without disclosing the address to the sender. A software agent processes the delivered message in accordance with a processing preference included in the entity attributes.

Universal message delivery system for handles identifying network

Character string recognition and identification is accomplished with a combined, multi-phase top-down and bottom-up process. Characters in an applied signal are recognized with a process that employs a knowledge source which contains information both, about the basic elements in the signal and about strings of the basic elements in the signal. The knowledge source, which may be derived from a training corpus, includes word probabilities, word di-gram probabilities, statisitics that relate the likelihood of words with particular character prefixes, and rewrite suggestions and their costs. Higher level word n-grams, such as word tri-gram probabilities, can also be used. A mechanism is provided for accepting words that are not found in the knowledge base, as well as for rewrite suggestions that are not in the knowledge base.
