An electrochemical conversion method for converting at least a portion of a first mixture comprising hydrocarbon to Cunsaturates by repeatedly applying an electric potential difference, V(&#x3c4;), to a first electrode of an electrochemical cell during a first time interval &#x3c4;; and reducing the electric potential difference, V(&#x3c4;), to a second electric potential difference, V(&#x3c4;), for a second time interval &#x3c4;, wherein &#x3c4;&#x2264;&#x3c4;. The method is beneficial, among other things, for reducing coke formation in the electrochemical production of Cunsaturates in an electrochemical cell. Accordingly, a method of reducing coke formation in the electrochemical conversion of such mixtures and a method for electrochemically converting carbon to Cunsaturates as well as an apparatus for such methods are also provided.

This invention provides a process for separating solute material from an algal cell feed stream. The algal cell feed stream, which contains the solute material, can be introduced into on portion of a mixer-settler vessel, and a solvent feed stream can be introduced into another portion of the vessel to mix with the algal cell feed stream, with a goal of separating at least a portion of the solute material from the algal feed stream.

This invention relates to a process for electrochemical conversion of dibenzothiophene type molecules of petroleum feedstreams selectively to mercaptan compounds that can then be more easily removed from the electrochemically treated product stream by either caustic extraction or thermal decomposition of the thiol functionality to hydrogen sulfide. The conversion of dibenzothiophenes to mercaptans is performed by electrochemical means in the substantial absence of hydrogen and in the substantial absence of water.

A method of providing sulfidation corrosion resistance and corrosion induced fouling resistance to a heat transfer component surface includes providing a silicon containing steel composition including an alloy and a Si-partitioned non-metallic film formed on a surface of the alloy. The alloy is formed from the composition &#x3b7;, &#x3b8;,and &#x3c4;, in which &#x3b7; is a metal selected from the group consisting of Fe, Ni, Co, and mixtures thereof, &#x3b8; is Si, and &#x3c4; is at least one alloying element selected from the group consisting of Cr, Al, Mn, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Sc, La, Y, Ce, Ru, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Ga, Ge, As, In, Sn, Sb, Pb, B, C, N, P, O, S and mixtures thereof. The Si-partitioned non-metallic film comprises at least one of sulfide, oxysulfide and mixtures thereof.

Silicon-containing steel compostition with improved heat exchanger corrosion and fouling resistance

A method of providing sulfidation corrosion resistance and corrosion induced fouling resistance for a heat transfer component is disclosed. The heat transfer component includes a heat exchange surface formed from a chromium-enriched oxide containing material formed from the composition &#x3b4;, &#x3b5;, and &#x3b6;, wherein &#x3b6; is a steel containing at least about 5 to about 40 wt. % chromium, &#x3b5; is a chromium enriched oxide (MOor MOor mixtures thereof) formed on the surface of the steel &#x3b6;, wherein M is a metal containing at least 5 wt. % Cr based on the total weight of the metal M, and &#x3b4; is a top layer formed on the surface of the chromium-enriched oxide &#x3b5;, comprising sulfide, oxide, oxysulfide, and mixtures thereof. The top layer &#x3b4; comprises iron sulfide (FeS), iron oxide (FeO), iron oxysulfide, iron-chromium sulfide, iron-chromium oxide, iron-chromium oxysulfide, and mixtures thereof. The metal M of the chromium enriched oxide (MOor MOor mixtures thereof) may comprise Fe, Cr, and constituting elements of the steel &#x3b6;. The steel &#x3b6; may be selected from low chromium steels, ferritic stainless steels, martensitic stainless steels, austenitic stainless steels, duplex stainless steels and precipitation-hardenable alloys.

Chromiun-enriched oxide containing material and preoxidation method of making the same to mitigate corrosion and fouling associated with heat transfer components

After desulfurizing a hydrocarbon feedstream using an alkali metal reagent, the hydrocarbon feedstream can include particles of spent alkali metal salts. The spent alkali metal salts can be separated from the hydrocarbon feedstream and regenerated to form an alkali metal reagent, such as a alkali hydroxide or alkali sulfide. The regeneration process can pass through an intermediate stage of forming an alkali carbonate by successive reactions with carbon dioxide and calcium oxide. The calcium oxide can also be regenerated.

Targeted application of anti-fouling mechanisms in a heat exchange system produces higher rates of energy recovery. The anti-fouling mechanisms with high mitigation rates can be deployed at only the hottest portions of a pre-heat train that experience the highest rates of fouling and heat loss. In application, bundles of corrosion resistant smoothed tubes are deployed in the late pre-heat train to significantly reduce the formation of harder deposits. Vibration can be used as an adjunct approach in conjunction with the corrosion resistant, smooth tubes, or deployed alone on existing bundles. The use of high performing, more durable exchangers in select locations justifies the increased cost of these components.
