A steering assembly is provided for steering a pair of vehicle wheels. The assembly includes a tie rod assembly having first and second tie rods. Each of the tie rods has an inboard end and an outboard end. The inboard ends may be coupled to the output member of a steering gear or they may be supported on a movable support member. The outboard ends are coupled to the vehicle wheels and, in particular, to tie rod arms extending from steering knuckles. The inboard ends of the tie rods are positioned forward of the outboard ends of the tie rods relative to the forward direction of vehicle travel when the vehicle wheels are facing forward. As a result, the effective length of the tie rod assembly increases as the turn angle of the vehicle wheels increases thereby reducing toe out of the vehicle wheels and tire wear and allowing sufficient clearance with wheel and brake components including brake drums found in conventional drum brake systems.

Vehicle steering assembly

A pivotal ball joint assembly includes a ball joint, an input/output member, and a secondary seal element to prevent contamination of the boot seal during movement and articulation of the input/output member relative to the ball joint. The ball joint has a socket body and a ball stud pivotally mounted to the socket body. The ball stud has a shank portion which extends therefrom and is aligned along a shank axis. An elastic boot seal which extends between the ball stud and socket body is also included. The pivotal ball joint assembly also includes an input/output member affixed to the ball stud shank portion so that the socket body is able to freely rotate relative to the input/output shaft about the shank axis. The pivotal ball joint assembly is further rotatable through a limited range about a transverse axis perpendicular to the shank axis. The secondary seal element extends between the boot seal and the input/output member to guard the boot seal to shank portion interface against contamination during movement and articulation of the input/output member relative to the ball joint.

Secondary sealing element for a boot seal

A steer axle assembly in accordance with the present invention includes an axle beam defining a first boss with a first bore. The assembly further includes a knuckle body that defines a second boss. The second boss is in the form of a unitary sleeve from which a tie rod arm and steering arm extend. The second boss includes a second bore. The assembly further includes a set of bearings disposed in one of the first and second bores. In one embodiment of the invention, the bearings are disposed in the axle beam bore. In another embodiment of the invention, the bearings are disposed in the bore defined by the knuckle body. The assembly finally includes a kingpin. The kingpin is rotatably received within the bore having the bearings and is rigidly coupled within the bore that does not include the bearings. The kingpin may be tightened to its required specification via the use of a washer and nut on one end of the kingpin.

Steer axle assembly

A steer axle assembly is provided. The assembly includes an axle beam that defines a boss at one end. The boss defines one bore configured to receive a kingpin. The boss further defines two additional bores that intersect the kingpin bore and that are configured to receive draw keys used to secure the kingpin within the kingpin bore. The draw keys are both disposed on an inboard side of the kingpin. The assembly further includes nuts disposed about one end of the draw keys on the same side of the axle beam. The inboard location of the draw keys and the same-side location of the nuts reduces assembly time for the steer axle assembly and securely locks the kingpin within the bore.

A pivotal ball joint assembly includes a ball joint, an input/output member, and a sealing element to provide a sealing surface abutting the boot seal and to prevent contamination of the boot seal during movement and articulation of the input/output member relative to the ball joint. The ball joint has a socket body and a ball stud pivotally mounted to the socket body. The ball stud has a shank portion that extends therefrom and is aligned along a shank axis. An elastic boot seal that extends between the ball stud and socket body is also included. The pivotal ball joint assembly also includes an input/output member affixed to the ball stud shank portion so that the socket body is able to freely rotate relative to the input/output shaft about the shank axis. The pivotal ball joint assembly is further rotatable through a limited range about a transverse axis perpendicular to the shank axis. The seal element is interposed between the boot seal, the shank portion and the input/output member to enhance the boot seal interface and thereby guard the boot seal to shank portion interface against contamination during movement and articulation of the input/output member relative to the ball joint.

Unitized boot seal for ball joints

A pair of arcuate brake shoes in a vehicle brake assembly are pivotably supported on a pivot pin which is directly mounted to a steering knuckle add activated by an S-cam type actuator where an S-cam actuator shaft is supported in a support tube which is attached directly to the steering knuckle thereby eliminating the traditional brake spider. Rotation of the S-cam causes a pair of cam followers to separate the brake shoes resulting in frictional contact between the brake shoes and a brake drum. Elimination of the brake spider to support the pivot pin and the S-cam actuator shaft housing reduces complexity for lower cost and improved performance.
