A rotation detection kit, comprising: a beam source; a receiver comprising at least one beam intensity sensor; a polarizer device for location in the path of a beam emitted from the beam source and received by the beam sensor; and a modulator. The modulator is configured to modulate at least one of i) the beam source and ii) a beam emitted by the beam source to create a discretely varying polarization orientation thereby defining first and at least second temporally spaced beam portions. The temporally spaced beam portions are incident on the polarizer device and the beam sensor and have substantially identical profiles and at least an initial common propagation axis toward the polarizer device.

Rotation detection kit

A laser interferometer is disclosed comprising a housing capable of being substantially repeatably mounted to a wall of an environmental chamber, the housing including a laser source, a reflector attached to an object located within the environmental chamber, and a light passage provided through the wall of the environmental chamber enabling passage of a laser beam from the laser source to the reflector. At least one beam steerer may be provided for adjusting direction of passage of a laser beam through the light passage. Also disclosed is a column laser interferometer.

Laser interferometer for repeatable mounting on the wall of a vacuum chamber

A laser system and interferometer are disclosed comprising a laser source for generating a laser beam, and first and second adjustable elements wherein the first and second adjustable elements have limited rotational motion so rotation of the first adjustable element causes deviation of a laser beam in one plane and rotation of the second adjustable element causes deviation in a second plane, and a laser beam from the laser source is oblique to a required beam direction whereby rotation of the adjustable elements deviates the laser beam enabling alignment of the laser beam to the required beam direction. The adjustable elements may be rotatable through 90&#xb0;. The first and second planes may be perpendicular to the required beam direction and to each other. At least one mirror may be provided which can be angularly offset to the required beam direction.

Laser system

Apparatus for aligning an optical measuring system to a desired direction comprises two housings () attachable to two relatively movable parts of a machine. The housings () have engagement means () such that when they are engaged together the optics inside () are aligned. The first housing () may be provided with attachment means, such as a ball (), which may be located in a mount () on the machine table (). The position of this ball () is determined and the machine spindle housing () to be attached to the spindle () when the two housings () are joined and such that the apparatus is aligned with the desired direction. The engagement means () between the two housings () may be compliant along an axis of the apparatus.
