A method for bonding a material to a first substrate surface that includes providing a catalyst at the first substrate surface and then contacting that surface with a material that undergoes a metathesis reaction to bond the material to the first substrate surface. There are two embodiments of this method&#x2014;a coating process and an adhesive process. In the coating embodiment, the metathesizable material is contacted with the catalyst on the substrate surface so that it undergoes metathesis polymerization to form the coating. The adhesive process includes (a) providing a catalyst at the first substrate surface, (b) providing a metathesizable material between the first substrate surface and the second substrate surface, and (c) contacting the catalyst on the first substrate surface with the metathesizable material so that the metathesizable material undergoes a metathesis reaction and bonds the first substrate surface to the second substrate surface.

Contact metathesis polymerization

An adhesive composition containing a polyvinyl alcohol-stabilized butadiene polymer latex and a methylene donor compound. The butadiene polymer latex is prepared by an emulsion polymerization in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol. The adhesive composition may also contain other optional ingredients such as a supplemental polymeric film-forming component, a nitroso compound crosslinker, a maleimide compound crosslinker, a vulcanizing agent, and an acid-scavenging compound. The polyvinyl alcohol-stabilized butadiene polymer latex and methylene donor compound combine to provide a tightly crosslinked, robust film which provides for excellent adhesion and environmental resistance.

Aqueous adhesive for bonding elastomers

Polyurethane compositions including the reaction product of a polyurethane prepolymer component including (a) at least one isocyanate-terminated polyalkadiene prepared by capping hydroxy-terminated polyalkadiene having a molecular weight from about 1500 to about 5000 grams per mol (g/mol) with isocyanate; and (b) at least one additional isocyanate-terminated polyalkadiene prepared by capping hydroxy-terminated polyalkadiene having a molecular weight from about 500 to about 1500 g/mol with isocyanate with a curative component. The compositions exhibit numerous useful properties, such as low glass transition temperature (T,) high temperature stability, low viscosity at room and elevated temperatures, flexibility and flat dynamic mechanical properties versus temperature.

Polyurethane compositions

An aqueous adhesive composition includes a water-dispersible polyisocyanate; an aqueous dispersion of a halogenated polyolefin elastomer; and a curing agent. The aqueous adhesive composition exhibits low VOC emissions and can be used to bond vulcanizable rubbers to a variety of substrates.

Aqueous adhesive compositions

An adhesive composition containing a linear polyester polyurethane, a halogenated polyolefin, an epoxy/silane adduct, a Diels-Alder adduct of a halogenated cyclic conjugated diene and a block copolymer of styrene and butadiene and a crosslinking compound for the linear polyester polyurethane. The adhesive composition is preferably utilized as a two-component adhesive for bonding vinyl polymers such as polyvinyl chloride to various substrates such as glass. The adhesive composition exhibits substantial resistance to environmental conditions without the requirements of a pre-heating step.

Adhesive with polyesterurethane, halogenated polyolefin and Diels-Alder

A butadiene homopolymer latex is prepared by emulsion polymerizing appropriate monomers in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol and a stabilizing solvent. The butadiene homopolymer latices can be prepared without problems of coagulation and can be utilized effectively in adhesive compositions without the use of volatile solvents. Adhesive bonds prepared from the butadiene homopolymer latices also avoid the side effect problems associated with polymers prepared utilizing conventional surfactant-based emulsion polymerization techniques.

Stable butadiene homopolymers latices

A butadiene heteropolymer latex is prepared by emulsion polymerizing appropriate monomers in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol and a stabilizing solvent. The butadiene heteropolymer can be a butadiene copolymer or terpolymer prepared from butadiene monomers and comonomers such as .alpha.-haloacrylonitrile and acrylic acid. The butadiene heteropolymer latices can be prepared without problems of coagulation and can be utilized effectively in adhesive compositions without the use of volatile solvents. Adhesive bonds prepared from the butadiene heteropolymer latices also avoid the side effect problems associated with polymers prepared utilizing conventional surfactant-based emulsion polymerization techniques.

Stable butadiene heteropolymer latices

A Diels-Alder adduct of a halogenated cyclic conjugated diene and a block copolymer of styrene and butadiene which is particularly useful in adhesive compositions. The Diels-Alder adduct has a halogen content of between about 30 and 45, preferably between about 34 and 40, percent by weight. The halogen content of the adduct is crucial to the performance of the adduct in adhesive compositions. Hexachlorocylopentadiene is a preferred halogenated cyclic conjugated diene for preparing the adduct and either diblock or triblock styrene-butadiene copolymers may be utilized.

Adhesive compositions based on block copolymer adducts

A one-coat adhesive composition which utilizes environmentally acceptable ingredients and which can withstand high temperature conditions such as those experienced during injection molding processes. The adhesive contains a Diels-Alder adduct of a perhalogenated cyclic conjugated diene and an olefinically unsaturated dienophile having a vinyl content in excess of 50 percent, a phenolic resin, an aromatic hydroxy compound, a formaldehyde donor, a heat-activated unsaturated elastomer crosslinker, a vulcanizing agent, and a metal oxide. An adhesive bond prepared with the adhesive is resistant to high temperature fluids and corrosive agents.

High-temperature adhesive compositions

A chemical formulation useful as a coating, primer or adhesive including a linear polyester polyurethane, a halogenated polyolefin, an alkoxy silane compound, and a cross-linker. The formulation is preferably utilized as a two-component adhesive for bonding vinyl polymers such as polyvinyl chloride to various substrates such as glass.

Glass adhesive

Compositions comprising at least one adduct of perhalogenated cyclic conjugated dienes and olefinically-unsaturated dienophiles having a vinyl content in excess of 50 percent have been found to be unexpectedly effective adhesive systems for bonding a variety of elastomeric materials, including vulcanizable and vulcanized natural and synthetic elastomer compositions, to themselves and other structural substrates.
