Process for preparing methacrolein

Provided is a process for preparing methacrolein which maximizes capture of methanol. Also provided are processes for producing methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate.

A process for continuously removing water in situ from an oxidative esterification reaction is provided. The process includes (a) conducting a first oxidative esterification reaction in a first reactor or reaction zone, wherein the total number of reactors or reaction zones is n and n is at least 2; (b) removing a crude product stream from the first reactor or reaction zone; (c) introducing the crude product stream to a distillation column to generate a column overheads stream and a column bottoms stream; (d) passing a portion of the columns bottoms stream to the product recovery zone; and (e) passing a portion of the column overheads stream to a subsequent reactor or reaction zone. Steps (a)-(e) can be repeated.

Process for in situ water removal from an oxidative esterification reaction using a coupled reactor-distillation system

A process for removing water from an oxidative esterification reactor includes (a) conducting an oxidative esterification reaction in a reactor; (b) removing a crude product stream from the reactor; (c) passing a first portion of the crude product stream directly to a product recovery zone; (d) introducing a second portion of the crude product stream to a distillation column to generate a column overheads stream and a column bottoms stream; (e) passing at least a portion of the columns bottoms stream to the product recovery zone; and (f) recycling a recycle stream comprising at least a portion of the overheads stream to the reactor; wherein the recycle stream contains less than 1 weight percent (wt %) water based on the total weight of the recycle stream, wherein the weight ratio of the first portion to the second portion is at least 1:10, and wherein the amount of the recycle stream recycled to the reactor is such that the reactor contains less than or equal to 2.5 wt % water, based on the weight of the reactor contents.

A process for preparing dry methacrolein, and a process for producing methyl methacrylate are disclosed.

Dehydration process

Hydroxycarboxylic acids, e.g., 3-hydroxypropionic acid, and/or their ammonium salts are dehydrated to their corresponding unsaturated carboxylic acids, e.g., acrylic acid, by a process that uses a catalyst comprising ammonium bisulfate. The use of ammonium bisulfate reduces or eliminates the problems associated with processes that use sulfuric acid as a dehydrating catalyst, e.g, excess sulfuric acid consumption and/or recovery.

Ammonium bisulfate catalyzed dehydration of beta-hydroxy acids

The present invention relates to a process for producing acrolein by liquid phase dehydration of glycerol by preparing a mixture of a catalyst suspended in an organic solvent comprising one or more vinyl polymers and glycerol; and then mixing and heating the mixture to between 150&#xb0; C. and 350&#xb0; C. to dehydrate the glycerol and form acrolein. The vinyl polymers are selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polystyrene, and mixtures thereof. The polyolefins may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyisobutylene, polyisoprene, polypentene, or mixtures thereof. The acrolein may be subjected to vapor phase oxidation in the presence of a catalyst, such as a mixed metal oxide, to produce acrylic acid.

Process for production of acrolein from glycerol

Alkenes, unsaturated saturated carboxylic acids, saturated carboxylic acids and their higher analogues are prepared cumulatively from corresponding alkanes utilizing using a multi-staged catalyst system and a multi-stage process which comprises steam cracking of alkanes to corresponding alkenes at flame temperatures and at short contact times in combination with one or more oxidation catalysts for catalytically converting the corresponding alkenes to further corresponding oxygenated products using short contact time reactor conditions.

Multi-staged catalyst systems and process for converting alkanes to alkenes and to their corresponding oxygenated products

A method for producing a mixture of ethylene and carbon monoxide by contacting ethane and an oxygen source at a temperature of at least 500&#xb0; C. to produce ethylene and carbon monoxide. A method for producing an alkyl propionate by steps of: (a) contacting ethane and an oxygen source at a temperature of at least 500&#xb0; C. to produce ethylene; (b) contacting an alcohol, ethylene and carbon monoxide with an ethylene carbonylation catalyst to produce the alkyl propionate; and (c) separating the alkyl propionate from byproducts and starting materials. The method further comprises condensing the alkyl propionate with formaldehyde to produce an alkyl methacrylate.

Processes for producing ethylene and carbon monoxide mixtures from ethane

A process for converting a salt of a hydroxycarboxylic acid to an unsaturated carboxylic acid, or esters thereof. The process involves converting an ammonium salt of a hydroxycarboxylic acid in aqueous solution to a corresponding hydroxycarboxylic acid and ammonium cation in aqueous solution; and separating the ammonium cation from the aqueous solution, leaving the hydroxycarboxylic acid in aqueous solution. The converting and separating steps may be accomplished by employing a hydrophobic acid or an acid ion exchange resin, each of which must have an acid dissociation constant, i.e., pK, at least 0.5 less that that of the salt of the hydroxycarboxylic acid. Where a hydrophobic acid is used, it must be immiscible in water, and its salt must also be immiscible in water, and the resulting multi-phase solution comprises an aqueous phase comprising the corresponding hydroxycarboxylic acid, as well as a non-aqueous phase comprising a neutralized acid. Alternatively, where the ion exchange resin is used, the aqueous solution of the ammonium salt of a hydroxycarboxylic acid is contacted with the resin, thereby converting the salt to a hydroxycarboxylic acid and capturing the ammonium cations on the resin. In either case, the aqueous solution is treated, such as by heating, to separate and recover the hydroxycarboxylic acid. The non-aqueous phase or resin is treated to separate and recover ammonia useful for preparing additional ammonium salt of a hydroxycarboxylic acid.

Process for converting a hydroxycarboxylic acid, or salts thereof, to an unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or its esters

An improved process for the production of unsaturated carboxylic acids and unsaturated nitrites from their corresponding Cto Calkanes, or mixtures of Cto Calkanes and alkenes, that involves a multi-stage reaction system which employs both separation of the oxidation product from one or more intermediate effluent streams, as well as feeding additional oxygen to reaction zones subsequent to the first reaction zone.
