A method is provided for assembling an exhaust processor including a housing formed from a tube having an inlet end and an outlet end, an internal inlet cone shield, a substrate, and an internal outlet cone shield. The housing includes an inlet end and an outlet end. The inlet end of the tube is sized down to a desired inlet diameter to form the inlet end of the housing. The internal inlet cone shield is installed into the tube through the outlet end of the tube. The substrate is inserted into the tube through the outlet end of the tube. The internal outlet cone shield is installed into the tube through the outlet end of the tube. The outlet end of the tube is sized down to a desired outlet diameter to form the outlet end of the housing.

Methods of assembling an exhaust processor

An exhaust processor assembly includes an exhaust pipe and a substrate for treating emissions contained in combustion product emitted from an engine exhaust. The assembly also includes a second pipe for providing a passageway receiving combustion product and the substrate means is positioned in the passageway to treat emissions passed therethrough. The assembly further includes an apparatus for positioning the second pipe in the interior region of the exhaust pipe so that thermal transfer between the substrate and the second pipe is minimized in order to maximize retention of thermal energy by the substrate resulting from the combustion product traveling through the passageway.

Low thermal capacitance exhaust processor

An exhaust processor assembly is provided for processing a flow of combustion product supplied by a source. The processor assembly has a housing including an inlet coupled to the source for admitting combustion product into the housing. The inlet includes first and second diverging nozzles interconnected by a transition section of uniform cross-section. A diverter is positioned in the inlet for interrupting the flow of combustion product traveling through the inlet toward the substrate. The specially configured inlet and the diverter cooperate to substantially uniformly distribute the flow of combustion product introduced into the housing across the inlet face of the substrate. Such uniform distribution provides a distributed exhaust flow designed to load the substrate substantially evenly to enhance combustion product treatment efficiency of the substrate means.

Exhaust processor assembly

A manifold exhaust processor includes a pair of substrates mounted within the interior of an exhaust manifold housing and aligned in end-to-end relation to permit each substrate to treat the combustion product exhausted from a different group of engine cylinders and to equalize the temperatures of the outer skin and centerline portion of the substrate to reduce thermal stress. A common outlet is provided to exhaust the treated combustion product. The first substrate is mounted in a first chamber of the manifold housing in close proximity to a first inlet to cause combustion product to be introduced into the first chamber in a direction toward a side wall of the first substrate to promote tangential flow about the side wall and around the substrate. Likewise, the second substrate is mounted in a second chamber of the manifold housing in spaced-apart, end-to-end relation with the first substrate and in close proximity to a second inlet to cause combustion product to be introduced into the second chamber in a direction toward a side wall of the second substrate, and also to promote tangential flow.

Manifold exhaust processor

An 'in-line' exhaust processor includes a housing having an inlet for introducing a combustion product from an engine and an outlet for exhausting filtered or otherwise treated combustion product from the housing. A first substrate is situated in a forward or upstream position within the housing to filter combustion product introduced into the housing through the inlet. A second substrate is situated in an adjacent rearward or downstream position within the housing to filter combustion product from at least two sources in the manner explained below. Each substrate includes a cellular structure having opposite inlet and outlet ends and a longitudinal axis. The housing includes a first clam shell portion and a complementary second clam shell portion joined to the first clam shell portion to surround and hold the substrate pair in series. The exhaust processor further includes a bypass channel for diverting a selected portion of the combustion product introduced into the housing through the housing inlet to the second substrate.
