A device is provided that may include an illuminator operable to interrogate at least a lens of an eye. The illuminator may include at least one light source and a lens positioned with respect to the light source to produce interrogating radiation. The device also may include a detector operable to image the total autofluorescence response of the lens of the eye as viewable through a pupil of the eye, the detector comprising an image sensor. The device can also include a controller operable to control operation of the illuminator and the detector. The controller may interrogate at least the lens of the eye by activating the illuminator for a select time, obtain at least one image of the total autofluorescence response of the lens at the detector during or immediately subsequent to the select time, and transmit the at least one image to a remote device.

Devices and methods for determining a disease state based total lens fluorescence

Implementations described herein include a device having a data collection system, an actuation assembly, and a visible target. The data collection system has an illuminator, a detector, and a beam splitter operably coupled to the detector. The actuation assembly is coupled to the illuminator via a holder and has a motor coupled to a linear actuator and a speed governor. The visible target facilitates alignment of the subject's eye with the data collection system. The illuminator illuminates the target tissue with interrogating radiation and the actuation assembly moves the illuminator from a first position to a second position to scan a focal point of the interrogating radiation through a predefined thickness of the target tissue. The detector detects the at least one value of the at least one characteristic of responding radiation received from or reflected from the target tissue and uses such information to determine the onset and duration of a pathological condition.

Device for noninvasive determination of pathophysiological conditions

Implementations described herein comprise systems, apparatus and methods for calibration of imaging, radio frequency or spectroscopic instruments that can be used to validate, calibrate or confirm the calibration thereof. In one aspect, a calibration target can be provided. The calibration target can have a tissue interface, and an instrument interface. The instrument interface can further comprise a first storage means having a first set of calibration data encoded therein and a second storage means having a second set of calibration data encoded therein. The first storage means and the second storage means can be selected to comprise different storage modalities. Both the first and second set of calibration data can be necessary to perform calibration of the instrument.

Encoded calibration device and systems and methods thereof

Implementations described herein comprise systems, apparatus and methods for calibration of imaging, radio frequency or spectroscopic instruments that can be used to validate, calibrate or confirm the calibration thereof. In one aspect, a calibration target is provided. The calibration target has a tissue interface and an instrument interface. The instrument interface has a first storage means having a first set of calibration data encoded therein and a second storage means having a second set of calibration data encoded therein. The first storage means and the second storage means are selected to comprise different storage modalities. Both the first and second set of calibration data are necessary to perform calibration of the instrument.

A system and method for extracting a biological fluid from an organism and continuously monitoring its characteristics. The system includes a tissue interface device suitable for positioning on or about the surface of the biological membrane of the organism and a monitor and control unit coupled to the tissue interface device. The tissue interface device includes a sensor positioned in a flow path of the fluid for continuously sensing a characteristic of the biological fluid as it flows out from the one or more artificial openings formed in the biological membrane. The sensor generates a sensor signal representative thereof. The monitor and control unit electrically or optically reads the sensor to obtain a measurement of a characteristic, such as concentration of a particular analyte, of the biological fluid on a continuous basis.

System and method for continuous analyte monitoring

A vacuum device and method for extraction of a substance from a fluid source, the vacuum device including an upper member that may be selectively, and operably, connected to a lower member. The upper member defines a bottom opening, and has a vacuum pump in fluid communication with the bottom opening. The vacuum pump is selectively coupled to an energy source. The lower member defines an inner cavity, a first opening, and a second opening, the inner cavity in communication with the first opening and the second opening. An elastic membrane defining an interior cavity is disposed in the inner cavity and is coupied to the first opening of the lower member. In use, the second opening of the lower member in placed in selective fluid communication with the fluid source, and the lower member is selectively coupled to the upper member such that the vacuum pump is electrically coupled to the energy source and the bottom opening of the upper member is in sealed contact with the first opening of the lower member so that the vacuum pump is in fluid communication with the interior cavity defined by the elastic membrane.

An alignment device and related systems and methods for aligning at least one apparatus with respect to a surface of a tissue. The alignment device comprises a tissue interface member suitable for positioning on the surface of the tissue and mating with the apparatus to maintain alignment of the apparatus during an operation of the apparatus. The alignment device is useful to align various apparatus that are part of a continuous analyte monitoring system.

Integrated alignment devices, system, and methods for efficient fluid extraction, substance delivery and other applications

An integrated device for poration of biological tissue, harvesting a biological fluid from the tissue, and analysis of the biological fluid. The device comprises a tissue-contacting layer having an electrically or optically heated probe to heat and conduct heat to the tissue to form at least one opening, such as a micropore to collect biological fluid from the opening, and a detecting layer responsive to the biological fluid to provide an indication of a characteristic of the biological fluid, such as the concentration of an analyte in interstitial fluid. In the embodiment in which, the probe comprises a photosensitizing assembly designed for the uniform application of a photosensitizing material, such as, for example, a dye or a pigment, to a tissue, e.g., the stratum comeum. In one embodiment, the photosensitizing assembly comprises photosensitizing material combined with a carrier, such as, for example, an adhesive or an ink, and the resulting combination is applied to a substrate, such as, for example, an inert polymeric substrate to form a photosensitizing assembly. In another embodiment, the photosensitizing assembly comprises photosensitizing material incorporated into a film-forming polymeric material.

Integrated poration, harvesting and analysis device, and method therefor

A system and method embodying the invention can be used to detect a characteristic or condition of a patient. A method embodying the invention may include the steps of illuminating a portion of a skin of the patient with light, detecting a frequency spectrum of light scattered from the skin, determining, from first and second portions of the spectrum, a first parameter indicative of a blood content of the skin and a second parameter indicative of a melanin content of the skin, determining, from a third portion of the spectrum, a third parameter indicative of an uncorrected bilirubin concentration, and calculating a corrected bilirubin concentration based on the first, second and third parameters.

Method and system for determining bilirubin concentration

A vacuum device and method for extraction of a substance from a fluid source, the vacuum device including an upper member that may be selectively, and operably, connected to a lower member. The upper member defines a bottom opening, and has a vacuum pump in fluid communication with the bottom opening. The vacuum pump is selectively coupled to an energy source. The lower member defines an inner cavity, a first opening, and a second opening, the inner cavity in communication with the first opening and the second opening. An elastic membrane defining an interior cavity is disposed in the inner cavity and is coupled to the first opening of the lower member. In use, the second opening of the lower member in placed in selective fluid communication with the fluid source, and the lower member is selectively coupled to the upper member such that the vacuum pump is electrically coupled to the energy source and the bottom opening of the upper member is in sealed contact with the first opening of the lower member so that the vacuum pump is in fluid communication with the interior cavity defined by the elastic membrane.

A disposable calibration device is used to calibrate a measurement system which transmits radiation or acoustic waves to a material or tissue in order to effect measurements. The disposable calibration device includes a structure with a window through which the radiation or acoustic waves can be transmitted, as well as a removable calibration target arranged on the window and capable of returning a portion of the radiation or acoustic waves for calibrating the measurement system. The removable calibration target can be peeled from a window to allow a measurement to be made on the material or tissue. Once a measurement is complete, the disposable calibration device can be discarded and a new calibration device can be inserted on the measuring system.

Apparatus and method for calibrating measurement systems

A combined infection shield and calibration or reference target for use with a measuring instrument includes a removable calibration/reference layer. The removable calibration/reference layer has predetermined optical characteristics that can be utilized to calibrate or reference the instrument. When the calibration/reference layer is removed from the remaining portions of the device, the portion of the calibration/reference layer having the predetermined optical characteristics is irrevocably altered such that the calibration/reference layer cannot be reused. The combined infection shield and target may be attached to a shield holder, which in turn is attached to an instrument. Alternatively, the infection shield and target may be attached directly to an instrument. The target may include a calibration/reference layer having a reduced strength portion which causes the target to tear or separate in a predetermined manner. Also, a double-sided adhesive layer with a gap may be used to attach the target to the remaining portions of the device, wherein the gap is arranged in a predetermined orientation with the reduced strength portion to aid tearing or separation of the target in a predetermined manner. The device may also include a cutter for causing the calibration/reference layer to tear or separate in a predetermined manner when the calibration/reference layer is removed from other portions of the device.
