An ergonomic handle is used in conjunction with a ductile material, e.g., straps, for securing, lifting and carrying objects. The handle comprises four legs perpendicular to each other and joined at a center routing bowl. The center bowl includes an angled tab arm over its top. Each flat surfaced leg with side rails provides a channel for the strap material. Each leg includes a locking tab fixed to one side of the leg. Integral gripping teeth are on one face of the locking tab and mate with similar integral gripping teeth on the channel surface of each leg. The strap is placed on a leg surface, secured with the locking tab, then wrapped around the object to the second leg and secured. At the center bowl, the strap is re-directed to a third leg, secured, then wrapped around the object for securing on the fourth leg.

An exemplary embodiment of the invention is directed to a method for performing quality function deployment for a system having a plurality of levels. The method includes obtaining a plurality of first level critical to quality parameters and obtaining a plurality of first level key control parameters. A first level quality matrix is generated identifying an effect at least one first level key control parameter has on at least one first level critical to quality parameter. The first level key control parameters are arranged into a first group and a second group. A second level quality matrix is generated for the first group. The second level quality matrix includes second level critical to quality parameters corresponding to the first group of first level key control parameters and a second level key control parameter. The second level quality matrix identifies an effect said second level key control parameter has on at least one second level critical to quality parameter.

A magnetic thrust compensator for a mechanical thrust bearing includes a parallel operating axial magnetic bearing including a stator including two parallel stator extensions, a rotor disk situated between the two stator extensions, and first and second electromagnets each situated on a respective stator extension and facing the rotor disk. A controller selectively energizes one of the electromagnets. Additional stator extensions and rotor disks can be used to provide fault tolerance. The electromagnets can each include dual annular windings. The compensator can include an additional stator extension, an additional rotor disk, and bias magnet situated on the additional stator extension and facing the additional rotor disk with the controller being adapted to selectively supply current to the bias magnet. In a closed loop embodiment, the mechanical thrust bearing can be spring mounted and, to determine the appropriate energization level of one of the electromagnets, the controller can determine a magnetic air gap length between the rotor disk and one of the stator extensions.

An apparatus and method for estimating rotor position in and commutating a switched reluctance motor (SRM), using both a flux/current SRM angle estimator and a toothed wheel generating a magnetic pickup. Commutation is based on the flux/current SRM at startup and lower speeds. At higher speeds, when magnetic pickup sensed from the toothed wheel is sufficiently large in amplitude to create frequent reliable interrupts, commutation is based on signals from the toothed wheel magnetic pickup. Phase errors can be compensated by adjusting the angle input to the commutator as a function of estimated speed. Alternatively, the flux/current SRM angle estimator can be run in a background mode to tune the toothed wheel interrupt angle signal at different speeds.

A fault tolerant active magnetic bearing system comprises a magnetic bearing having a rotor mounted for rotation within a stator and for coupling to a shaft. An electric power distribution system is energized from a multi-phase switched reluctance machine supplying three independent DC power buses. Each of the power buses is coupled for supplying power to a respective pair of diametrically opposite electromagnets of the magnetic bearing so as to establish multiple magnetic control axes. Multiple power controllers are each operatively connected in circuit with a separate respective power bus. The power controllers include independent power control systems each coupled to a respective pair of diametrically opposite electromagnets for independently controlling energization of each one of the pair of diametrically opposite electromagnets.

A method for estimating rotor position of a switched reluctance motor during rotor start-up or low speed operation includes applying a sequence of relatively high frequency, short duration electric probing pulses to at least two inactive excitation phase windings of a multi-phase motor. The voltage and current at each of the two inactive excitation phase windings are measured and the resultant values used to compute an estimated rotor/stator linkage/flux in each of the two excitation phase windings. The computed linkage/flux and measured phase current of the two inactive excitation windings is then used in a model to determine the rotor position. In one form, rotor position is determined by establishing a table of values representing rotor position as a function of phase current for each of a plurality of values of motor phase linkage/flux and selecting from the table a value of rotor position corresponding to the measured phase current and computed linkage/flux for the phase.

An array of three magnetic sensors in a single package is employed with a single bias magnet for sensing shaft position, speed and direction of a motor in a high magnetic noise environment. Two of the three magnetic sensors are situated in an anti-phase relationship (i.e., 180.degree. out-of-phase) with respect to the relationship between the other of the two sensors and magnetically salient target, and the third magnetic sensor is situated between the anti-phase sensors. The result is quadrature sensing with noise immunity for accurate relative position, speed and direction measurements.

A fault tolerant active magnetic bearing has at least three magnetically isolated control axes. To this end, the active magnetic bearing has a segmented stator which employs non-magnetic sections for magnetically isolating adjacent electromagnetic force actuators, and hence adjacent control axes. As a result, operating force actuators are not affected by magnetic poles experiencing a fault. Hence, in a three-phase active magnetic bearing rotor suspension control system, for example, full control of rotor shaft position can be maintained with only two functioning control axes.
