This invention relates to novel end-functionalized, linear, non-crosslinked polyolefins without pendant chain branched groups, and to a process for the preparation of these end-functionalized, linear, non-crosslinked polyolefins. These non-crosslinked polyolefins comprise the reaction product of (A) a cyclic olefin monomer, with (B) a chain transfer agent, in the presence of (C) at least one catalyst, preferably a ruthenium metal carbene catalyst. The polyolefins of the present invention are characterized as having a functionality as defined by vapor phase osmometry (VPO) and end group titration in the range of from 1.7 to 2.2, and correspond to a specified structure. Suitable chain transfer agents for the presently claimed polyolefins comprise the reaction product of at least one unsaturated diol and at least one alkylene oxide in relative molar ratios of from 1:1 to 1:1000. These polyolefins are prepared via ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP).

This invention relates to a process for the synthesis and purification of hydroxyl-end group functionalized, linear, non-crosslinked polyolefins without pendant chain branched groups, and specifically to hydroxyl-end group functionalized polybutadienes. The process comprises polymerizing a cyclic olefin monomer with a chain transfer agent in the presence of a suitable catalyst, thereby forming a protected end-group functionalized polyolefin, followed by adding a mixture comprising water and caustic to the protected end-group functionalized polyolefin to remove the protecting groups, thus forming a hydroxyl end-group functionalized, linear, non-crosslinked polyolefin without pendant chain branched groups.

A di-hydroxy-functionalized linear non-crosslinked polyolefin is disclosed having no pendant chain-branched groups which is prepared by reacting 1,4-diacetoxy-2-butene with 1,5-cyclooctadiene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a ruthenium metal carbene complex, characterized in that the functionality number of said polyolefin as determined by NMR is 2.0 and the viscosity of said polyolefin ranges from about 800 to 16000 mPa.s @25.degree. C. at a number average molecular weight ranging from 2,600 to 6,500 g/mole. A prepolymer comprising the reaction of a polyisocyanate with the polyolefin is also disclosed.
