A display system that temporarily but securely displays a variety of large-sized interchangeable display objects atop vehicle rooftops for eye-catching public broadcast. The display system comprises a display object and a common, reusable base. The display object combines an art ornament with a display object connection assembly that matingly connects to a base connection assembly without the use of tools. The base is releasably secured to vehicle rooftops using an array of magnets. Intended for personal use, the display system is designed to be more convenient and aesthetic than commercial displays allowing users to display a variety of interchangeable display objects with associated art ornaments, communicating different messages based on changes in the seasons, their activities and interests, their mood, or other factors.

Functionalized tris(hydroxyphenyl) compounds

A polyarylate is formed by reacting a mixture of esters of a dihydric phenol and trisphenol, at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid, an alkali metal catalyst, an inert diluent having a boiling point of from about 200.degree. C. to about 300.degree. C. Polyarylates of improved shear sensitivity and higher molecular weight can be formed.

Process for preparing improved polyarylates

Crude hydroxyphenylalkane, e.g., 1,1,1-tris(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethane, is purified, to reduce color and prevent caustic solution turbidity, (a) by contacting the hydroxyphenylalkane in alcoholic solution with an alkali metal dithionite, preferably in the presence of an alkalinity agent such as an alkali metal borohydride, more preferably by introducing the dithionite into the alcoholic solution as an alkaline aqueous solution, (b) precipitating the hydroxyphenylalkane from the alcoholic solution, and optionally (c) rinsing the hydroxyphenylalkane with an alkaline aqueous solution of the dithionite.

Purification of hydroxyphenyl alkanes

A method is provided for the preparation of ibuprofen by carbonylating 1-(4'-isobutylphenyl)ethanol (IBPE) with carbon monoxide in an acidic aqueous medium, e.g. containing at least 10% of water based on the weight of IBPE initially added, at a temperature of at least about 10.degree. C. and a carbon monoxide pressure of at least about 500 psig, and in the presence of (1) a catalyst complex consisting essentially of a palladium compound in which the palladium has a valence of zero to 2 and is complexed with at least one monodentate phosphine ligand miscible with the organic phase of the reaction medium, the phosphorus/palladium mole ratio in said palladium compound and ligand being at least about 2:1 when the palladium/IBPE mole ratio is such that palladium=1 and IBPE=10,000 or more; (2) dissociated hydrogen ions from an acid which is substantially completely ionizable in dilute aqueous solution such that the mole ratio of hydrogen ions to IBPE added to the reaction zone is at least about 0.15; and, (3) dissociated halide ions such that the mole ratio of halide ions to IBPE added to the reaction zone is at least about 0.15. Advantageously, a hydrogen halide is the source of hydrogen ions and halide ions. The carbonylation is preferably integrated with a method of producing IBPE from isobutylbenzene wherein the latter compound is subjected to Friedel-Crafts reaction with an acetylating agent to produce 4-isobutylacetophenone, which is then reduced with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, or with a reducing agent containing available hydrogen, to obtain IBPE. The palladium catalyst complex can be precipitated from an organic phase of the carbonylation reaction which typically includes the ibuprofen product. The precipitated catalyst complex can be recycled without further treatment.

The sealed enclosure for an electrical power generation solar concentrator holds and protects the photovoltaic cell from ambient conditions and thermal shock, while multiple fingers of front and rear electrical contact terminals accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of the cell and minimize mechanical stresses on the cell. This sealed enclosure also holds the secondary lens and protects the internally reflective truncated conical rear surface of the lens. A base member has a socket for receiving the cell and its associated front and rear terminal members together with an insulator alignment disc having an opening receiving the cell and for aligning the cell with the axis of the concentrator. A front housing removably screws onto the base member with an inturned front lip gripping a peripheral flange on the secondary lens, thereby aligning it with the cell and firmly pressing it against the cell front for causing thermal mass and inertial of the lens to moderate temperature changes in the cell. The base member screws onto a pedestal of a finned heat sink of good thermal conductivity fitting into a pre-punched hole in a panel of the concentrator, thus aligning the sealed enclosure with the concentrator axis. The pressure of the secondary lens on the cell causes the cell back to press onto its multiple-fingered rear contact member of good electrical and thermal conductivity which in turn is pressing against a thin electrical insulator in good thermal conductivity with the heat sink pedestal.
