A power management system includes a first power grid coupled to a first circuit breaker, and a first power distribution unit coupled to the first circuit breaker. A server device includes server components, and at least one first power supply unit coupled to the first power distribution unit. A power management subsystem in the server device is coupled to the server components and the at least one first power supply unit. The power management subsystem monitors a first input current draw of each first power supply unit, and determines whether the first input current draw exceeds a first input current limit that is based on the first circuit breaker. In response the first input current draw exceeding the first input current limit, the power management subsystem throttles the server components to reduce the first input current draw below the first input current limit.

An information handling system includes a power supply and a baseboard management controller (BMC). The power supply includes an input power monitor module and a communication interface. The input power monitor module is configured to detect a total harmonic distortion (THD) on a power input to the power supply, to determine that the THD is greater than a THD threshold, and to provide an indication that the THD is greater than the THD threshold on the communication interface. The BMC is coupled to the communication interface, and is configured to receive the first indication and to enter an item into a log of the information handling system in response to receiving the indication.

System and method for using input power line telemetry in an information handling system

A system may include a power train comprising a rectifier and power factor correction stage configured to receive an alternating current (AC) input voltage waveform and convert the AC input voltage waveform into a regulated direct current (DC) voltage on a bulk capacitor configured to store electrical charge and a controller configured to control the rectifier and power factor correction stage to perform power factor correction between the AC input voltage waveform and an AC input current waveform related to the AC input voltage waveform. The controller may implement a voltage regulation loop configured to regulate the regulated DC voltage on the bulk capacitor to a desired constant average value based on a combination of a DC current signal associated with the power train and a voltage loop error signal based on the regulated DC voltage and a current loop regulating the shape of the AC input current waveform to a sinusoidal value in phase with the AC input voltage waveform.

Systems and methods for fast response and low total harmonic distortion power factor correction

An information handling system includes a power supply and a power assist unit. The power supply powers a power rail. The power assist unit includes a power storage element, a converter including a semiconductor device coupled to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail, and a controller configured to receive a load indication that indicates a power demanded by the load and to provide an intermediate output based upon the load indication. The controller includes a boost element to receive the intermediate output and to provide a controller output. The controller output is a sum of a bias voltage level provided by the bias element and the intermediate output. The controller output is coupled to a gate terminal of the semiconductor device. The converter provides power from the power storage element to the power rail in response to the controller output.

Method and apparatus for providing high bandwidth capacitor circuit in power assist unit

An information handling system includes a power assist unit (PAU) and a baseboard management controller (BMC). The PAU is coupled to a power rail and includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and the power rail, and a controller. The controller receives a current level indication indicating a current provided to a load of the information handling system, directs the converter to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail when the current level indication is greater than a threshold level, directs the converter charge the power storage element from the power rail when the current level indication is greater than the threshold level, and provides a charge level indication that indicates an amount of charge on the power storage unit. The BMC receives the charge level indication, and sets a peak power limit for the information handling system based on the charge level indication.

Method and apparatus to provide platform power peak limiting based on charge of power assist unit

An information handling system includes first and second power supplies and a power assist unit. The power supplies are each configured to provide power to a power rail to power a load of the information handling system, to provide input power indications that indicates whether or not the power supplies are receiving good input power, and to provide a output power indications that indicates whether or not the power supplies are providing good power to the power rail. The power assist unit is coupled to the power rail and includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and to the power rail, and a controller. The controller receives a hold-up signal from the information handling system, and in response to receiving the hold-up signal, directs the converter to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail. The hold-up signal is based upon the input power indications and upon the output power indications.

Method and apparatus for extending power hold-up with power assist unit

An information handling system includes a current detector module and a baseboard management controller (BMC). The current detector module is configured to detect current slew-rate for an element of the information handling system, to determine that the current slew-rate is greater than a current slew-rate threshold, and to provide an indication that the current slew-rate is greater than the current slew-rate threshold on a communication interface. The BMC may enter an item into a log of the information handling system in response to receiving an indication.

System and method for using current slew-rate telemetry in an information handling system

An information handling system includes first and second power supplies. The first power supply unit provides power to a power rail to power a load of the information handling system, and is configured to provide the power to the power rail at a first peak current level and at a first constant current level. The second power supply unit provides power to the power rail, and is configured to provide the power to the power rail at a second peak current level and at a second constant current level. The second peak current level is greater than the first peak current level, and the second constant current level is greater than the first constant current level.

An information handling system includes a power supply unit (PSU) and a power assist unit (PAU). The PSU provides a power rail to power a load, and a constant current indication that indicates whether the power supply unit is operating in a constant current mode. The PAU is coupled to the power rail, and includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and to the power rail, and a controller. The controller receives an enable signal when the constant current indication indicates that the first power supply unit is operating in the constant current mode, and in response, the controller directs the converter to convert a voltage from the power storage element and to a current to the power rail to meet an additional demand of the load for power.

In one or more embodiments, one or more systems, methods, and/or processes may determine an engagement of a power supply unit with at least one of an information handling system (IHS) and a chassis configured to house multiple information handling systems (IHSs); may provide a power at a first voltage to the at least one of the IHS and the chassis; may determine if the at least one of the IHS and the chassis utilizes a second voltage; if the at least one of the IHS and the chassis utilizes the second voltage, may determine if the power supply unit is configured to provide the power at the second voltage; and if the power supply unit is configured to provide the power at the second voltage, may provide the power at the second voltage to the at least one of the IHS and the chassis.

System and method of utilizing power supply units

An information handling system includes active and standby power supplies and a power assist unit. The power supplies provide power to a power rail. The standby power supply supplies current to the power rail when a current demanded by a load is greater than a proportion of a maximum current demand, and is off when the current demand is less than the proportion. The power assist unit is coupled to the power rail and includes a power storage element, a converter coupled to the power storage element and to the power rail, and a controller. The controller receives a current level indication that indicates the current demanded by the load, and in response to the current level indication indicating that the current demand peaks to greater than the proportion of the maximum current demand, directs the converter to provide power from the power storage element to the power rail to prevent the second power supply unit from turning on.

Apparatus and method for providing smooth power-on operation with power assist unit

A method includes measuring an initial voltage a bulk capacitor at a power supply, controlling a power factor correction circuit to disable charging of the bulk capacitor for a predetermined period of time, and measuring a final voltage at the bulk capacitor at completion of the period of time. The method further includes measuring a first average power provided to a load receiving power from the voltage converter, the load external to the power supply, and determining a capacitance of the bulk capacitor based on the initial voltage, the final voltage, and the first average power.

A portable or modular cooling system is operated via the power-over-Ethernet (PoE) standard. The cooling system receives electrical power via an Ethernet connection to a source device (such as a server, switch, or other PoE-enabled equipment).
