Protective garment for environments having high radiant heat loads and/or high conductive heat loads is described. A protective footwear article and method of making includes an upper with an opaque outer layer; an inner layer; and a thermally reflective layer positioned between the outer layer and the inner layer, the thermally reflective layer having a reflective surface facing the outer layer.

A wearable sensor retaining device and techniques for integrating a wearable sensor retaining device into a first responder's garment, such as a firefighter's shirt. The wearable sensor retaining device may include a strap having a rigid connector having a male portion and a female portion (e.g. a side-release buckle) for adjustably securing the strap around a wearer's torso to ensure proper location of the wearable sensor and proper fit for the wearer. The strap has a portion for coupling to a wearable sensor and having sufficient tension to retain the wearable monitor in the proper location, while maintaining wearer comfort so as not to impede the range of motion of the wearer. The strap may include a length adjustment loop that provides the wearer a customized fit and quick, consistent application.

A modular garment includes a sleeved jacket and a vest that may be worn by a first responder. The sleeved jacket is constructed for use in some emergency circumstances, including technical rescue operations. Portions of the jacket, including at least portions of the sleeves, may be constructed to satisfy more stringent garment standards, such as garment standards for structural firefighting. A vest may be worn over the sleeved jacket to produce a combined jacket suitable for use as turnout gear in structural firefighting.

A protective apparel system for responders such as firefighters, civil defense, and defense workers is disclosed. Different aspects include a boot with a flange for forming a vapor/liquid tight seal with trousers, trousers that include a resistant barrier cuff for interfacing with a boot, and a resistant barrier liner that includes a gusset providing for expansion of the liner.

A safety harness and techniques for integrating the safety harness into apparel such as a firefighter's turnout suit. The safety harness may include a waist belt having a fastener (e.g., buckle) for adjustably securing the waist belt around a wearer's waist, first and second leg straps for encircling a wearer's legs, and a continuous support strap fixed to each of the first and second leg straps and slideably attached to the waist belt. The continuous support strap has a front middle portion for coupling to a coupling mechanism (e.g., carabiner, ladder hook, knot, clamp, weld, or a combination thereof) and having sufficient slack so as to not impede access to the waist belt fastener. Under no-load conditions, the front middle portion of the continuous strap may hang down below the waist belt fastener, or may be stowed to one side of the waist belt fastener.

A safety harness and a method of integrating the safety harness into apparel such as a firefighter's turnout suit. The safety harness may include a waist strap, a leg strap for encircling a wearer's leg, and a support strap slideably attached to the waist strap.

A coat for use by emergency responders, such as firefighters, is described. Certain aspects of the coat include a barrier resistant liner for protection against chemical and biological agents, a compression zone that can improve safety when working in hazardous areas, and a flame resistant shell including zippered sleeves that can facilitate the donning of protective gloves.

Fire protective trousers include an outer shell and a removable liner, the outer shell having right and left front panels which extend around and behind the center sides of the outer shell and connect with respective right and left rear panels along outseams at the rear of the outer shell, thus providing more material in the front of the outer shell and reducing rubbing contact with the body of the wearer. The respective inseams curve to the rear and down to the lower edges of the rear panels. The right and left front panels also include respective upper and lower pleats that extend from the outseams toward the inseams and from the inseams toward the outseams thereof to provide extra material in the knee areas of the leg portions. The rear panels have concave lower edges to reduce dragging on the ground and the possibility of being stepped on by the wearer. The center rear seam is at least 6 inches longer than the center front seam to provide extra room in the buttocks area of the trousers and reduce binding in the thigh and abdomen areas of the wearer.

Fire protective trousers for use by firefighters, emergency responders and rescue workers includes an outer shell that can mount a removable liner therein and a belt closure system, the outer shell defining a belting area and the belt closure system including right and left sheaths that respectively extend from the right rear to the right front and from the left rear to the left front of the trousers and through which extend respective right and left belt sections whose rear ends are attached to the outer shell and whose front ends are attached to the respective right and left parts of a snap buckle that can be easily attached or disconnected by a wearer even if wearing gloves.

A liner system for a flame resistant coat includes a thermal barrier and a moisture barrier, the upper portion of the thermal barrier being detachably connected to the inner part of the collar of the coat, while the upper portion of the moisture barrier is detachably connected to the outer part of the collar. The upper portions of the thermal barrier and moisture barrier are free of one another; and the upper portion of the moisture barrier extends into the collar a substantial distance above the upper edge portion of the thermal barrier when the collar is in vertical position.

A fire protective coat to be worn by a firefighter, an emergency responder, a rescue worker, etc., includes a throat protector for protecting the throat area of the wearer, the throat protector including an elongated tab of fire and heat resistant fabric material which is connected by a flexible connector strip to the coat collar, the elongated tab including attachment means on a rear surface for detachable connection with attachment means on the right and left front portions of the collar to maintain the elongated tab in a use state across the front gap of the collar. Additional attachment means on the elongated tab can detachably connect to other attachment means to maintain the elongated tab in a folded condition when in a non-use state. The flexible connector means allows the elongated tab to freely hang from the collar with the attachment means thereon facing the coat when the elongated tab is not connected to the collar.

A well styled, single layer shell jacket is resistant to inclement conditions, yet possesses the various characteristics of conventionally comfortable clothing, and permits the stitching of emblems thereon without impairing waterproof and windproof characteristics. Superposed on the waterproof and windproof fabric of each sleeve and forming a pocket thereon is a patch. In the patch is a zipper or other closure. This closure, when opened, permits entry into the pocket and sewing of an emblem or the like on the packet without affecting the waterproof and windproof construction of the remainder of the jacket.
