A system and associated method for quickly and automatically determining if the safety and performance of a gun tube have been compromised by firing damage or by an excessive number of fatigue cycles. An electromagnetic resonant cavity inspection provides a means of rapidly evaluating the health of the gun tube by monitoring the resonant frequencies that evolve from microwave signals introduced into the cavity or bore of the gun tube. This approach exploits the high sensitivity of the electromagnetic cavity resonance phenomena. Defects and degradation in the structure's cavity produce quantifiable changes in the quality factor, frequency shifts, and mode splitting.

System and method for conducting electromagnetic resonant cavity inspection of gun barrels

A simple, inexpensive, and fast method of establishing if a defect does or does not exist within a thick-walled solid geometry, which is especially useful to detect if such a defect, a crack, exists within a gun barrel. With further analysis, the method allows not only the identification of the defect's presence; but, a means of establishing the size thereof&#x2014;which, for example, is critical to understanding if a gun tube has a defect that would warrant its being taken out of service for the safety of its crew or removed from manufacturing. The method involves creating an acoustic vibration in the particular thick-walled, solid geometry, esp. a gun barrel, and observing the vibration pattern which results. The size of the particular defect can be ascertained by a) manually using a correlation between the magnitude of the defect and the relative changes in the decay coefficient or shifts in frequency data or (b) automatically using a Bayes maximum likelihood, statistical pattern classification algorithm and a library comprised of either the decay coefficients or the means and covariances of defect-free and cracked objects.

Crack detection in thick-walled cylinders

An apparatus for counting and storing a number of rounds fired from a gun includes a microcomputer; a non-volatile memory connected to the microcomputer; and at least one piezoelectric transducer connected to the microcomputer and mounted on the gun, the at least one piezoelectric transducer comprising a power source that generates power during operation of the gun. The piezoelectric transducer may also sense the firing of the gun.

Self powering prognostic gun tag

An apparatus for generating an impact against a target object comprises a driver reciprocally disposed in a housing. The driver includes a hollow tube having a closed end and a nozzle seating the other end. A piston is slidably positioned in the tube. Propellant is disposed between the piston and the closed end of the tube and fluid is disposed between the nozzle and the piston. A rupture disc is provided for sealing the nozzle which is adapted to rupture when the pressure in the tube exceeds a predetermined pressure. A striker is also mounted in the housing so that in a retracted position of the striker a head portion is proximate the driver and a portion of a shaft extends outwardly from the housing. The striker member is movable between the retracted position and an extended position. The propellant is ignited so that combustion gases build pressure in the tube between the piston and the closed end of the tube causing the pressure in the tube to exceed the predetermined pressure for rupturing the disc. This causes the piston to move toward the nozzle and fluid to be expelled through the nozzle for moving the driver against the head portion of the striker. The driver transfers energy to the striker for moving the striker to the extended position at high velocity for driving the end of the striker with great force against the target object. Recoil action is cushioned by the fluid exiting the nozzle.

Recoilless impact device

An apparatus for generating an impact against a target object comprises a driver reciprocally disposed in a housing. The driver includes a hollow tube having a closed end and a nozzle sealing the other end. A piston is slidably positioned in the tube. Propellant is disposed between the piston and the closed end of the tube and fluid is disposed between the nozzle and the piston. A rupture disc is provided for sealing the nozzle which is adapted to rupture when the pressure in the tube exceeds a predetermined pressure. A striker is also mounted in the housing so that in a retracted position of the striker a head portion is proximate the driver and a portion of a shaft extends outwardly from the housing. The striker member is movable between the retracted position and an extended position. The propellant is ignited so that combustion gases build pressure in the tube between the piston and the closed end of the tube causing the pressure in the tube to exceed the predetermined pressure for rupturing the disc. This causes the piston to move toward the nozzle and fluid to be expelled through the nozzle for moving the driver against the head portion of the striker. The driver transfers energy to the striker for moving the striker to the extended position at high velocity for driving the end of the striker with great force against the target object. Recoil action is cushioned by the fluid exiting the nozzle.

A monitor device for monitoring the activity of an individual to provide an alarm for anomalous by the individual. The device includes a triaxial accelerometer adapted to measure simultaneously measure acceleration in three orthogonal, linear axes and generate a voltage output identifying the amplitude and frequency of detected motion by the individual in each axis. Also included is interface electronics for receiving the voltage outputs and buffering the voltage outputs to generate a first reference voltage for each axis of the accelerometer. Amplifier electronics amplifies each voltage output and compares each voltage output to the first reference voltage to produce a digital signal. A microcontroller receives the digital signal to compare it to an adjustable second reference voltage. The microcontroller is programmed to discriminate between normal activity and anomalous activity by identifying sensor activity within sequences of preselected time intervals and sending an alarm signal upon detection of the anomalous activity. An alarm for receiving the alarm signal and signaling an alarm completes the device.

Personal event monitor with linear omnidirectional response

An electronic light source which replaces the hazardous tritium light sou used in the existing Muzzle Reference System (MRS) found on the M1 Series of tanks. The MRS is mounted near the muzzle end of the gun (opposite the breech) and is used by tank gunness to measure gun deflection for calibration of the tank's fire control computer to optimize accuracy. The electronic light source is an LED which is activated by the pulses from a microcontroller based on the input received from a small, low power, omnidirectional motion sensor which detects the movement of the tank mounted on the tank. In the current implementation, the motion sensor comprises a conductive rolling sphere in a cylindrical chamber having a conductive wall with one electrical pole and end plates electrically insulated from the conductive wall and having the other electrical pole such that movement of the element caused by movement of the cylinder will generate intermittent electrical contact between one end plate and the cylinder wall. The signals produced are fed to the microcontroller which through the operation of its oscillator energizes the LED. The oscillator frequency is selected to eliminate EMI detection. The activation of the LED is prepared in such a manner to extend battery lite by minimizing power drain, a thermometer is employed for temperature control of the LED and other electronic circuit elements.

Smart electronic muzzle reference light source

A motion detection device for monitoring patient movement. The device includes a sensor adapted to generate a voltage from mechanical vibrations and a circuit in operable relationship with the voltage for generating an alarm upon detection of a predetermined signal. The circuit provides a fixed impedance to the sensor. A micro controller is used for analyzing the signal to select from first and second conditions by sensing activity within sequences of preselected time intervals. The first condition represents a medical condition and the second condition represents casual motion. A switch is used for setting a time interval and a total sampling time for the micro controller. An alarm signal generates an alarm upon detection by the microprocessor of a predetermined activity. The preferred sensor comprises a housing having an outer shell and a hollow spherical opening therein. A plurality of inner spherical bodies are adapted to move freely inside the spherical opening to produce detectable mechanical vibration in the outer shell. A piezoelectric film is attached to a portion of the outer shell to generate a voltage from the mechanical vibrations.

Personal motion event monitor

A motion detection monitor for patient movement, comprising a sensor for viding signals in response to patient movement to provide an alarm under predetermined conditions of patient movement. A processor, including an oscillator, is provided for receiving signals from the sensor, to provide oscillator interrupt signals proportional to active signals. The interrupt signals are observed within a contiguous series at time windows. The alarm condition is satisfied when interrup signals are detected within each window. The sensor preferably includes a conductive sphere in a cylinder having an interior portion locating the sphere therein with conductive end plates and conductive inner surfaces, the inner surfaces being tapered to direct the sphere to an at rest condition in contact with at least one surface and at least a part of the inner surface in any orientation of the sensor. The motion detection device further includes jumper circuits for adjusting the parameters used to distinguish from casual motion and for providing a visible alarm. The motion detection device further includes a remote, tetherless receiver for receiving the alarm signal, the transmitter means repeatedly providing the alarm signal over a periodic interval until the processor is reset by an operator. The visible alarm is pulsed with relatively short pulses sufficient to activate the alarm, the short pulses being less than sufficient to activate the receiver.

Motion sensor

A motion detection device for use as a monitor for patient movement, inclng a sensor for generating motion signals, an integrator for integrating the motion signals over a period of time, and a threshold level of signals generating an alarm signal upon exceeding a predetermined minimum value of the motion signals to activate an alarm. The sensor includes an edge detector for providing a motion sensed outpost of a series of sharp voltage rises and falls to generate a sequence of voltage pulses of predetermined magnitude and time duration which generate an alarm signal if the pulses are generated faster than a preset rate of voltage decay based upon a preselected minimum movement to be sensed. The preferred intermittent switch comprises a conductive rolling sphere in a cylindrical chamber having a conductive wall with one electrical pole and end plates electrically insulated from the conductive wall and having the other electrical pole such that movement of the element caused by movement of the cylinder will generate intermittent electrical contact between one end plate and the cylinder wall. The device preferably further includes a transmitter producing a transmitted radio signal upon receipt of the alarm signal, the radio signal being receivable by a conventional radio.

A bottle and can picking apparatus includes a portable carrier frame, a rotatable member mounted on the carrier frame, a plurality of flexible loops attached to the rotatable member and extending radially therefrom for picking up the bottles, cans and other litter, a drive motor for driving the rotation of the rotatable member, and a waste receptacle for receiving and holding the litter picked up by the loops. As the carrier frame is moved over the ground and the rotatable member is rotated, the flexible loops come in sweeping contact with the ground, dislodging the litter and lifting it upwardly and rearwardly into the waste receptacle.
