The invention is related to a method of altering the metabolism of a plant by carrying out the steps of treating seeds of the plant with non-genetically engineered selected mutant pink-pigmented facultative methylotroph having a plant altering capability, and growing the plants from the treated seeds, wherein the plants that grow from such treated seeds exhibit an altered characteristic relative to non-treated plants.

Seeds coated or impregnated with at least one pink pigmented facultative methylotroph (PPFM) have improved germinability. PPFMs can be cultured to produce the cytokinin zeatin.

A method of altering the metabolism of a plant includes the steps of genetically altering at least one commensal bacterium of the plant to alter the level and nature of the enzyme activity produced by the plant. Because of the close relationship between the commensal bacteria and plant with regard to total enzyme activity, and the relationship of total enzyme activity to agronomic production, the present invention provides a mechanism to significantly improve agronomic performance.
