A system and method for testing components traveling at high speeds is presented. A system includes an elongated test chamber, high and low pressure reservoirs, a piston and a pressure control system. The elongated test chamber has first and second ends. In some configurations, the test chamber can be a pneumatic cylinder. The high pressure reservoir is connected to the first end of the elongated test chamber and the low pressure reservoir is connected to the second end of the elongated test chamber. The piston travels with a unit under test from the first end of the test chamber to the second end of the test chamber. The pressure control system uses, in part, the low and high pressure reservoirs to dynamically adjust a force profile across the piston as it travels from the first end of the elongated test chamber to the second end of the elongated test chamber.

High speed pneumatic simulation facility

An optically guided munition and control system has a replacement fuse assembly mounted on the front of a munition body or shell casing. An optical seeker subsystem detects an illuminated target and supplies signals to a processor. The processor develops steering commands sent to a flight control subsystem having a plurality of guidance canards which are actuated by drive motors through gear assemblies. The roll of the munition is established and left/right and up/down steering commands are sent to the canard drive motors based upon the optical seeker subsystem detection of the target illuminator. Range adjustment is based upon bore sight lockdown angle and cross range control is based upon left/right centering error. A code is contained in the optical radiation received from the illuminated target which must be validated by a preset code in the system processor to arm the munition.

Optically guided munition control system and method

A method for emplacing sensors, comprising the steps of modifying an existing sensor to attach an autorotational mechanism and deploying said sensor by autorotational means.

Covert sensor emplacement using autorotational delivery mechanism

A method and system for guiding and controlling an ordinance body having a trajectory and a bore sight angle including making corrections to the trajectory based on bore sight angle vs. time history. The system is incorporated with existing fuse components in a replacement kit for existing munitions. The method determines nominal time values of the ballistic trajectory of the munition in relation to launch time and determines deviation from the nominal time values by an algorithm by analyzing signals received from a source of radiation located at the target. A processor determines lateral (left/right) and range errors and provides commands to a plurality of flight control surfaces mounted on the munition.

Ballistic guidance control for munitions

An optically guided mortar comprising a three axis canard assembly, an optical seeker, a guidance and control processor, and a fuze mechanism. The optical seeker is a direct replacement for existing standard mortar fuzes. The resulting system significantly improves current mortar circular error probability (CEP) and results in overall reduction of cost of target prosecution, reduction in collateral damage, improved crew survivability, and adds compatibility against limited non-stationary targets. The optical seeker detects an optical illuminator located at a target and supplies signals to the guidance and control processor which through a guidance algorithm supplies steering commands to drive motors of the three axis canard assembly which move a plurality of guidance canards to accurately direct the munition toward a target.

Radiation homing tag

An electro-optical cable () which includes an optical element () having an elongated glass fiber core (), a medial cushioning layer () concentrically surrounding the glass fiber core, and an outer hard shell () material surrounding the medial cushioning layer. The cable also includes at least one electrically conductive element () comprising an elongated conductive core () and a dielectric layer () concentrically surrounding the electrically conductive element.

Electro-optical cable for use in transmission of high voltage and optical signals under extremes of temperature

A method for intercepting and a defeating rocket propelled grenade (RPG) which includes the steps of detecting a thermal signature from a launch of the RPG; and cueing a narrow beam radar which locates the RPG and develops a ballistic solution and target intercept point for intercepting the PPG with an intercept vehicle.

System for interception and defeat of rocket propelled grenades and method of use

An apparatus for measuring coupled aerodynamic stability and damping derivatives of an object, such as a missile, towed decoy, etc. in a wind tunnel. The object is mounted on a bearing in the wind tunnel and contains an instrumentation package which provides a plurality of signals for determining coupled moment derivatives. The package includes three rate sensors, three accelerometers, and two thermal detectors for measuring the time rate of change of the full six degree of freedom state vector for aerodynamic derivatives.

Measurement of coupled aerodynamic stability and damping derivatives in a wind tunnel

A system and apparatus for deployment of a decoy from a moving object, such as an aircraft, to protect the aircraft from an enemy missile. The decoy is stored in a housing mounted on the aircraft and is connected by a cable containing fiber optics and high voltage conductors. The cable is stored on a spool which is reciprocally moveable along a rotating shaft provided with a double helix and which is located coaxially within an outer rotatable de-bailer. The cable is drawn through a passage formed in an outer cylindrical side wall and end wall of the de-bailer as the decoy is deployed from the aircraft. The cable causes the de-bailer to rotate about the spool which reciprocates back and forth along the double helix shaft. The spool is connected to the helix of the shaft by a pawl and a brake mechanism controls the rotational speed of the shaft, and thus the payout speed of the cable. The control cable extends continuously from the decoy to a stationary terminus at the aircraft avoiding the use of a fiber optic rotary joint or slip ring technology heretofore required.

High speed electro-optic payout system incorporating a stationary optical terminus

A decoy deployment and retrieval system includes an extensible boom and corresponding cradle or saddle for use in the retrieval of the towed decoy such that, upon retrieval, the extensible boom with its decoy captured in the cradle is retracted into a chamber so that the decoy can be deployed over and over again. In one embodiment, the decoy is both towed by, and controlled over, a fiber optic line in which a load cell is used to detect tension on the line to prevent damage, and a fiber optic rotary joint is utilized along with high voltage slip rings to permit electrical and optical coupling without backlash, fouling or damage to the line.

Compact deployment and retrieval system for a towed decoy utilizing a single cable employing fiber optics

A fast deployment and retrieval system permits the rapid deployment of a decoy in seconds in response to an incoming threat, thus eliminating the necessity of pre-deployment, with retrieval permitting reeling in and deployment of the decoy a number of times during a mission in response to threats, and a commensurate reduction in life cycle cost. Upon detection of an incoming threat by a warning receiver, a controller coupled to a transmission releases a brake that is utilized to control the speed of deployment, whereas upon retrieval, the transmission drives a motor for retrieval of the decoy. The system is thus reusable, fast reacting, and also minimizes range penalty considerations because the decoy is only deployed when needed. In one embodiment, the system accommodates both a towing cable and a fiber-optic signal cable in which apparatus for unwinding of the cables is mechanically ganged together so that the cables pay out at the same rate. This type of payout lowers the stress on the fragile fiber-optic cable making possible multiple deployments and retrievals in response to separate threats during a mission. In another embodiment, a single, structural member with embedded conductors is utilized to connect the towed device to the round assembly.

Fast deploy, retrievable and reusable airborne counter-measure system

Recovery of a towed body, in one embodiment in the form of a decoy which is initially stowed in a receptacle or canister and which is allowed to pay out behind an aircraft on a towing cable wrapped around a spindle, is accomplished by snaring or lassoing a portion of the towing cable and by dragging it to a further spindle which is driven so as to cause the lasso and a portion of the towing cable to wind up around the driven spindle. When a sufficient amount of the cable is wound around the driven spindle, the cable end secured to the canister is severed to allow all of the rest of the towing cable to be wound up. In one embodiment, a telescoping saddle or docking cradle is provided which extends from the canister to receive the retracted towed body so that it may be secured to the moving vehicle from whence it can be recovered, refurbished, and redeployed.
