A safety logic for vehicle rollover detection systems comprising a main rollover detection logic and at least one protection device for the occupant or occupants of the vehicle, including a vehicle lateral acceleration sensor (), which generates an output signal indicating a near rollover event, when a lateral acceleration of a vehicle exceeds the first predefined threshold value () or, when a lateral acceleration of vehicle exceeds the second predefined threshold value () that is lower than the first predefined threshold value () and simultaneously at least one additional safety logic activation signal is present ().

Safety logic for vehicle rollover detection systems and a method for detecting near rollover situations

The present invention relates to a method and system for detecting a vehicle rollover or dangerous situations that may precede a rollover of a vehicle. The method comprises the steps of (a) measuring the set of input signals including at least vehicle velocity, vehicle steering angle, vehicle lateral acceleration, and vehicle roll rate; (b) integrating the vehicle roll rate to obtain the vehicle roll angle increment; (c) determining the vehicle state on the basis of the input signals; (d) determining the vehicle estimated lateral acceleration, corresponding to the vehicle true roll angle, on the basis of at least the vehicle state, vehicle lateral acceleration and the centrifugal acceleration; (e) determining the vehicle estimated roll angle on the basis of at least the vehicle roll angle increment, the vehicle estimated lateral acceleration and the vehicle state; and (f) generating an output activation signal determining a possibility of rollover of the vehicle, as a function of at least: vehicle estimated roll angle and the vehicle roll rate.

Method and system for detecting a vehicle rollover

The present invention relates to a method and system for detecting a vehicle rollover or near-rollover event that may precede a rollover of a vehicle. The system comprises controller connected to at least one right and at least one left vehicle tire pressure sensor, performing the assessment of pressure signals on the basis of pressure characteristics corresponding to rollover or near-rollover events, and generating an output activation signal that determines the vehicle rollover or near-rollover event if said assessment is positive. The controller is preferably connected to at least one additional sensor and performs the additional assessment of this sensor signal on the basis of this signal characteristics corresponding to rollover or near-rollover events. The protection devices are activated sequentially, starting with the resetable protection devices, in dependence of estimated rollover confidence.

Method and system for detecting vehicle rollover events

A logic for detecting vehicle rollover includes a first main activation path activated by vehicle lateral acceleration and a second main activation path activated by vehicle vertical acceleration. The logic also includes a first additional activation path activated by vehicle roll angle, a second additional activation path activated by vehicle roll rate, and a third additional activation path activated by vehicle longitudinal acceleration. Activation of each path results from the sensor specific for that path when the output exceeds a threshold value. Logic activation occurs when at least one main activation path and at least one additional activation path are activated.

Logic and a method for detecting a vehicle rollover

A reconfigurable rollover event detection methodology utilizes an existing body of vehicle sensor data. A number of different algorithms or look-up modules develop rollover detection outputs based on different sets of sensor data, and a meta-algorithm combines the various rollover detection outputs to form a single rollover detection output. The number of individual rollover detection outputs is configurable depending on the extent of the available sensor data in a given vehicle and changes in sensor availability that occur due to sensor and communication failures.
