The system includes receiving, from a delegator, a designation of a role and a delegate to assume the role, receiving, from a credential service provider, an indication that the designation is valid, issuing a delegation credential in response to receiving the indication, and issuing a confirmation to the delegator, which indicates that the delegation credential was issued.

Delegating digital credentials

An arrangement is provided for controlled access to identification and status information or delegated credentials. A delegation, formed between a delegator and a delegate, is registered with a delegate credential service provider. The delegate requests a service from a relying party that then requests, based on the requested service and the delegation, delegated credential from the delegate credential service provider. The delegate credential service provider sends the delegated credential to the relying party. According to the received delegated credential, the relying party generates a service response and sends the response to the delegate.

Controlled access to credential information of delegators in delegation relationships

An electronic device receives inputs using images of input devices and scanning sensors that detect user interaction with those images. For example, an image of a mouse may be projected and the user's interaction with that image may be scanned using digital video cameras. These user movement images may then be analyzed to determine, for example, the direction, extent and rate of movement of the user to provide pointer position command signals. Similarly the user's movement relative to a virtual keyboard image may be analyzed and converted into key actuation signals for responding to the actuated virtual keys.

A computer system may be operated to enhance the functions available with a transceiver such as a cellular telephone, for example by providing enhanced memory and processing capabilities. In some embodiments, the computer can be linked to a cellular telephone to provide advanced speech recognition functions, language translation functions and encryption and authentication functions which may not be feasibly implemented in cellular telephones of relatively small size. For example, the computer system could be a portable computer system linked to a docking station which receives the cellular telephone. Alternatively, the cellular telephone and the computer may communicate by infrared or radio wave communications.

Augmenting the capabilities of transceivers

A system for controlling the temperature inside a computer system housing involves determining whether a predetermined temperature set point has been exceeded. If the temperature set point has been exceeded, corrective action is attempted without adversely affecting the performance of the computer system. This may be accomplished by determining whether there are unused devices which are consuming power. If so, these devices may be transitioned to a lower power consumption state which may correspond to a lower heat generation state as well.

A method and device for adjusting the power consumption of a computer system are disclosed. A user application running on the computer system is arranged to operate in any one of a preselected number of operating modes. A power conservation module obtains power characteristics from a power information module, selects one of the preselected number of operating modes of the user application, as a function of the power characteristics obtained from the power information module, and causes the user application to operate in the selected operating mode.

Adjusting software characteristics by user interface based upon battery

A power management system and interface providing a flexible and uniform protocol for controlling power management within a computer system including various software layers and add-in components. Clients (registered system elements) requiring power management notification and control become registered (via an associated software component) with a power management coordinator (PMC). The PMC provides information routing functions and address translations to facilitate communication (including power consumption information) between clients at registered identifiers. A programmable power policy manager allows a user to define a performance/economy setting for the system that is communicated to all registered devices so that dwell and decay times are appropriately set by the device. A programmable event sequencer maintains an event notification sequence and control sequence for power events. A programmable power budgeter maintains and allocates power on a request basis for system elements. A programmable thermal budgeter maintains and allocates energy based on thermal considerations. A BIOS interlace couples for communication between an APM BIOS (if present) to send commands and poll for and receive event notification. Registered extensions may be used to provide alternate functionality for the sequencer, the power policy manager, and the thermal and power budgeters. The PMC provides for communication of power status, events, and other information between registered devices and allows registered software applications to originate power events. Other extensions may register to enhance power management.
