Adducts are provided comprising MgCl, ethanol and a Lewis base (LB), said compounds being present in molar ratios defined by the following formula MgCl.(EtOH)(LB)in which n is from 2 to 6 and p has values satisfying the following equation p/(n+p)&#x2266;0.1. The said adducts can be used as precursor in the preparation of high activity ZN catalysts.

A MgCl.mEtOH.nHO adducts, where 3.4&#x3c;m&#x2266;4.4, 0&#x2266;n&#x2266;0.7, characterized by an X-ray diffraction spectrum, taken under the condition set forth above, in which, in the range of 2&#x3b8; diffraction angles between 5&#xb0; and 10&#xb0;, at least two diffraction lines are present at diffraction angles 2&#x3b8; of 9.3&#xb1;0.2&#xb0;, and 9.9&#xb1;0.2&#xb0;, the most intense diffraction lines being the one at 2&#x3b8; of 9.3&#xb1;0.2&#xb0;, the intensity of the other diffraction line being less than 0.4 times the intensity of the most intense diffraction line. Catalyst components obtained from the adducts of the present invention are capable to give catalysts for the polymerization of olefins characterized by enhanced activity and/or porosity with respect to the catalysts prepared from the adducts of the prior art.

The present invention relates to an adduct comprising MCl, an alcohol (ROH) in which R is a C1-C10 hydrocarbon group, and a compound containing a transition metal M selected from the Groups 3 to 11 or the lanthanide or actinide groups of the Periodic Table of the Elements (new IUPAC version) in an amount such as to give a weight of M atoms lower than 10% based on the total weight of the adduct. The catalyst components that are obtained by reacting the adducts with halogenating agents show very high specific activity.

A process for the (co)polymerization ethylene, optionally in mixtures with olefins CH&#x2550;CHR in which R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical with 1&#x2013;12 carbon atoms, carried out in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (A) a solid catalyst component which comprises Mg, halogen an electron donor selected form ethers, esters, or amines, and Ti atoms in an oxidation state such that the weight percentage ratio between Ti/Tiranges from about 0.05 to about 1; wherein Tiis the weight percentage on the solid catalyst component of the Ti atoms having a valence less than 4 and Tiis the weight percentage on the solid catalyst component of all the Ti atoms and (B) an Al-alkyl compound. The said process is capable to produce ethylene polymers with a reduced oligomers content and/or improved mechanical characteristics.

The invention relates to catalyst components, suitable for the preparation of homopolymers and copolymers of ethylene having a broad molecular weight distribution (MWD), which comprise Ti, Mg, Cl, and are characterized by the following properties: surface area, determined by BET method, of lower than 100 m /g, a total porosity, measured by the mercury method, of higher than 0.25 cm /g, a pore radius distribution such that at least 45% of the total porosity is due to pores with radius up to 0.1 &mgr;m.

The invention provides new prepolymerized catalyst components for the (co)polymerization of olefins CH &boxH;CHR, wherein R is hydrogen or a C1-C12 alkyl group, characterized by comprising a solid catalyst component, comprising Ti, Mg, halogen and an electron donor compound, being capable of yielding, under standard polymerization conditions, a propylene homopolymer having an insolubility in xylene at 25&deg; C. higher than 90%, which is prepolymerized with ethylene to such an extent that the amount of the ethylene prepolymer is up to 100 g per g of said solid catalyst component. These solid catalyst components display to obtain a high catalyst activity, a high isotactic index, and are not affected by aging.

Magnesium dichloride-alcohol adducts, process for their preparation and catalyst components obtained therefrom

The present invention relates to MgCl .mROH.nH O adducts, where R is a C -C alkyl, 2&lE;m&lE;4.2, and 0&lE;n&lE;0.7, characterized by a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) profile in which no peaks are present at temperatures below 90&deg; C. or, if peaks are present below said temperature, the fusion enthalpy associated with said peaks is less than 30% of the total fusion enthalpy. Catalyst components obtained from the adducts of the present invention are capable to give catalysts for the polymerization of olefins characterized by enhanced activity and stereospecificity with respect to the catalysts prepared from the adducts of the prior art.

The present invention relates to components of catalysts for the polymerization of olefins comprising a metallocene compound and a magnesium halide which have particular values of porosity and surface area. Group 4 and vanadium metallocenes are useful metallocenes and the components typically include an electron donor such as an ether, ester or ketone. In particular the components of the invention have surface area (BET) greater than about 50 m /g, porosity (BET) greater than about 0.15 cm /g and porosity (Hg) greater than 0.3 cm /g, with the proviso that when the surface area is less than about 150 m g, the porosity (Hg) is less than about 1.5 cm /g. The magnesium halide is complexed by an ether, ester, or ketone electro donor. The components of the invention are particularly suitable for the preparation of catalysts for the gas-phase polymerization of &agr;-olefins.
