A fluid contains a base oil and an antioxidant, the base oil consisting of sulfur-containing polyalkylene glycol where greater than 80 weight-percent of the fluid is a sulfur-containing polyalkylene glycol and less than one weight-percent of the fluid is water, with weight percent based on total fluid weight an wherein the sulfur-containing polyalkylene glycol is free of oxygen bound directly to sulfur.

A capped oil soluble polyalkylene glycol has the following structure: RO-(AO)&#x2014;Rwhere: Ris a linear or branched alkyl or aryl with one to 18 carbon atoms; AO refers to residuals of monomers selected from 1,2-butylene oxide and 1,2-propylene oxide selected so that at least 50 weight-percent of the (AO)component is 1,2-butylene oxide residuals; n is selected to provide a kinematic viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius of less than 5 centiStokes for the non-capped polyalkylene glycol; and Ris a linear or branched alkyl or aryl having from 1-8 carbon atoms and wherein the capped oil soluble polyalkylene glycol is characterized by having a kinematic viscosity of less than 4.5 centiStokes at 100 degrees Celsius and a viscosity index of greater than 150.

A lubricant composition comprising a Group I, II, III or IV hydrocarbon oil and a polyalkylene glycol, the polyalkylene glycol having been prepared by reacting a C-Calcohol and a mixed butylene oxide/propylene oxide feed using a double metal cyanide catalyst catalyzed oxyalkylation process, and wherein the lubricant composition remains clear and shows no phase separation at temperatures equal to and greater than the pour point of the hydrocarbon oil is provided. A method for making a lubricant composition is also provided.

A polyalkylene glycol comprising: a random copolymer comprising units derived from EO and units derived from PO initiated with polytetrahydrofuran; wherein the polyalkylene glycol has a pour point of less than or equal to &#x2212;30&#xb0; C. as measured using ASTM D97 and a traction value of less than 0.0165 at a contact pressure of 1.25 GPa, speed=2 m/s, SRR of 100% and temperature of 80&#xb0; C. is provided. Also provided are lubricant compositions containing such polyalkylene glycol.

Energy efficient polyalkylene glycols and lubricant composition containing same

Certain polyalkylene glycols, useful as lubricant additives, are soluble with all four types of hydrocarbon base oils (Groups I-IV) at a wide variety of ratios of oil to polyalkylene glycol and under a variety of conditions. These polyalkylene glycols are prepared by reacting a C8-C20 alcohol and a mixed butylene oxide/propylene oxide feed, wherein the ratio of butylene oxide to propylene oxide ranges from 3:1 to 1:1. The invention provides a means of providing desirable lubricant compositions which may pose fewer environmental problems.
